I think the reason why the Danny/Laura scenes fell flat was because post hollstein, it felt like they were just sitting in front of the computer talking over the same info? I would have liked to see something other than just the two sitting and talking instead of showing? To be fair that could be chalked up to the format. Absolutely no intention to fight but that's how I saw it. Also it was the writing, not the ship itself, didn't do them any justice
First off, thank you for doing this off anon! Automatic bonus points in my book.
Yeah, I think that definitely comes down to the format because honestly, a lot of the plot happens in episodes with Laura and Danny while the whole “budding romance” thing happens in episodes with Laura and Carmilla. And if people admit that they in fact don’t watch the show for the plot, then that’s one thing. But the school counsel and Laura fighting for the school was always played up when Danny was around and that’s supposed to be the glue of the show because at its core, Carmilla is not Carmilla’s story. It’s Laura’s, and it has been since the 1800s. So the fact that the main plot was never really brought up in Carmilla scenes outside of her belittling Laura’s optimism sort of made the plot have to be shoved in big amounts into certain episodes (and notice that the plot never really got explained at all until towards the end of the season).
There is one genuine plot thing however that I will absolutely agree ruined a couple of the Laura/Danny scenes and that was that gross subplot involving Kirsch’s crush on Danny. It should have been wrapped up at the beginning of the season with a quick, “I’m gay!” or “I don’t like you that way!” But instead was dragged out almost the whole season because we’re supposed to think the straight guy who doesn’t respect the queer girl’s boundaries is cute???
