Tell me about the world of your illegal magic au? Like, how accepted is magic? Is there formal training? How would one become 'registered' as a seer or a were?
:D
Magic is well known about but seen as something more trouble than it’s really worth, as it is pretty heavily regulated. Basically you get registered like you would get a driver’s license to say: yeah ok this person can do X and Y in situation Z. And when applied to businesses and the like, there are a variety of permits and regulations that must be followed or fines are incurred.
So for example, with moving furniture or a delivery service, if they want to use warping as a method of transport, they would have to have licensed magic users certified in large object warping, a permit to use it for business (which comes with it’s own regulations), and insurance that covers any kind of warp based mishap/damage/injury.
Basically think of everything having red tape because
1: Public safety and bureaucracy
2: The gov’t wants dat cash money from fines and taxation of magical materials
Which rare magic items would be taxed more heavily than others, and there would probably a whole trade regulation thing with certain animal based products and protections/bans/tariffs.
“Didn’t you know unicorns are basically extinct?! You can’t just use unicorn blood in a potion!”
It would be like using rhino horn or tiger bones, and if you are dealing with a sentient species like dryads there would probably be treaties in place too.
And yes there would be courses and classes in magic, but only for adults, unless it is home schooled/home taught to kids from family members. This is because the general populace strongly disagrees with magic being taught in the public school system as it is dangerous and “a gateway to illicit and immoral activities”. All them religious nuts who argue sex ed and science, would doubly protest magic education.
As for weres, those are registered for public safety reasons, and especially for weres it’s like keeping a sex offender registry. Controversial since weres don’t necessarily decide to become a were, but humans have like zero trust of anyone that can suddenly turn into a ravenous beast. So weres are pretty outcast and tend to live in communities of their own, or with non-human creatures.
Vampires are also treated like weres, but have an even greater stigma attached to them.
Psychics get registered if they ever want to use their powers to run a business (fortune tellers etc) or to have any of their visions be taken seriously in a court of law. Their registration process is just a method of confirming what they claim to be their power.
thanks for asking!
Is Trevor in your Illegal Magic AU? if so, as what?
!!!
Here’s some more people and what they are:
Trevor: skin-walker/shifter (fox, but i’m not sure if red fox or kit fox yet)
Mica: Furie/Erinys
Steffie: Human
Andrew: Human
I just found your illegal magic AU and it is probably one of the best things I have ever read. Though I am a little confused as to why Ryan was trapped by the devils trap in the beginning if he's not possessed? Is it because he's technically a malevolent being? sorry if it was explained and I missed it :)
DING DING DING! WE HAVE A WINNER!
In an earlier ask I mentioned that there were two things I was waiting for people to notice, and this is the other one!
First off, thank you so much for the compliment! I don’t know if it’s really one of the best things you’ve read, but it means a lot! (i’m not blushing, you’re blushing)
As for the devil trap; yes it is because he is a malevolent non-human being. The traps are like a catch-all solution, and pretty powerful for how simple they are. They are probably some of the earliest magic that still is actively used to this day. Humans wanted to trap anything and everything that would do them harm, and most of the uses of a devil trap were lost over the years as demons took center stage as enemy number one.
But the traps are magic, old magic, but still magic. So a Smiling Stranger in control of their negation power wouldn’t be bothered much by a trap. Breaking such powerful magic might tire them a bit, but that’s about it.
Unfortunately, Ryan has zero clue he even has powers, never mind trying to control them. So a devil trap works pretty great on him.
Along those lines, it’s the same reason why exorcisms hurt him. The rituals are all “hey bad and mean thing, go away” and since he’s not spectral he can’t just “poof” and disappear. Him leaving would have to be him walking away, and when trapped, he can’t exactly do that, so the exorcism starts hurting him in an effort to make him go away.
So, question! How do Michael and Lindsay meet in the illegal magic au if they had never met or worked with geoff?
I haven’t got all the details worked out yet, but basically Michael moved to Austin after becoming a werebear in order to leave his friends, family, and anyone else he was afraid of hurting, behind.
Lindsay would have already been in Texas for work by this point.
I have two ways in mind that they could have met:
1. Lindsay entered his mind while she slept and experienced his fear and loneliness, so she tracks him down. Cue her trying to earn his trust.
2. Lindsay volunteers at a shelter in her off time. Walks in first thing in the morning to find a naked man asleep in one of pens with a bunch of dead animals (like rabbits or something). Michael wakes up, freaks out, bears out, and there’s a bunch of screaming before Lindsay either manages to calm him down or sedates him.
The Lost Asks: Smiling Stranger Lore
As promised here are the asks tumblr ate this morning. They were asked by @nopepinephrine
I have finally just gotten around to reading your illegal magic AU and I have to say I really love your world building! It is just such a intriguing and unique interpretation! I am quite curious to know what mythology/folklore inspirations you used for the Smiling Stranger concept (asides from Changelings)?
It makes me really happy to hear that the world-building and lore is getting love <3
The Smiling Stranger is an original creation of mine that I made specifically for this world after a long search through different lore and myths. I had a vague idea of what I wanted for Ryan. I focused on some key features of his personality, and while I wanted the creature to fit, I also wanted to allow Ryan to be an individual (so that he could have his quirks without them simply being a part of his lore).
Most of what I found had heavy religious origins, or was very deeply seeped in culture I was wholly unqualified to even attempt writing.
Originally I was toying with the idea of having him be a new pagan god of sorts. The kind of being that you would have guarding an ancient wood, or mountain and requiring tribute. But ultimately I felt it would get too convoluted, and too similar to the powers I already have for King Ryan in my royalty au.
So I went back to the basics: what are some core human fears? I came up with: the unknown, predation, being alone, and helplessness. So I built up from there and began to pull in all those lovely “don’t talk to strangers”, “be suspicious of those who are too friendly”, “don’t wander away too far”, and “don’t go into the woods” tales and stories that everyone had to grow up with.
Boom, Smiling Stranger.
Whoops, another question! In your story Jack hypothesizes that because Ryan was raised by humans he was confused about his identity, but at the same time these creatures were meant to be raised by humans to "blend in". If this is the case, why is Ryan confused? Was he supposed to innately recognize he wasn't human and would have eventually eaten his "parents"? Or are there are bunch of Smiling Strangers out there really confused about themselves? Sorry, hope I am not bothering you!
I’m so happy you picked up on that! It’s one of two things I’m hoping people find and go “wait, what?”.
No one’s asked about the other yet, so we’ll see :3
So with Ryan being a Smiling Stranger; historically humanity has been less than kind to children that don’t fit in or are in anyway different (Europe especially, and that’s what I know best). As little as 150 to 200 years ago it wouldn’t be unheard of to abandon a child to fend for their own if they are too much of a burden (or even just kill them outright). Combine that with a high probability that a Smiling Stranger changeling would eventually end up killing someone, and these kids would definitely not be tolerated, even hunted down.
The Smiling Stranger life cycle basically begins with being a changeling for their helpless years and then having to fend for themselves in the wild where they would discover their abilities and prey on the humans that originally harboured them.
I imagine survival rate would be pretty poor LOL, but that’s normal for any predator.
In today’s modern and urbanised world, especially since this is set in the USA, parents would be very unlikely to just ditch a child if they had the resources and will to try and ‘help’ them. So Ryan was in therapy from a young age instead of being left to his devices. Then at 12 he’s interred, and it just goes downhill. He never had the 'fend for yourself and learn what you are capable of’ stage of the life cycle so he came up with his own explanation based on what he knew; mental illness and demons was all he really knew as a kid. Also Georgia is religious as fuck, and that would have definitely been an influence on him when younger.
so with your IMau if theres demons are there angels? or something similar?
In the Illegal Magic AU there really isn’t demons and angels in the traditional sense in that there is no heaven or hell.
There are demons and daemons, which are incorporeal entities within that dimension, although many extra-dimensional beings get lumped into the demon category. Only a summoner or someone who actually knows how to identify them could really classify them as otherwise.
But true demons that are the whole evil and possessing, are native to that main human realm.
The difference between a demon and daemon is just their attitude towards mortals in the corporeal realm. Power wise they can be just as varied as the other.
Demons love mortals. They want to spend as much time in the corporeal realm as possible because to them mortals are the best playthings ever.
Daemons prefer remaining incorporeal and have little to no interest in mortals unless a mortal makes it their business with some sort of ritual or summoning.
Hopefully that explains a bit?
