Feature on IMDb
Off and on since last week, IMDb has been running this feature. Zawe and Tom come in at #91. A welcome sight.
So, I watched The Shawshank Redemption a few weeks ago. It was my first time watching the film—I guess I was just waiting for the right time to give it a go. I’ve been wanting to write this for quite some time, but I never really found the words to do so. I still haven’t found them all, but I’m going to try my best nonetheless.
Remember how Andy, when he first came to Shawshank prison, claimed to be innocent? And how no one very obviously believed him, because every single person there (perhaps except Red) claimed to innocent, even when they were not? Unsurprisingly, Andy was not going to be considered an exception.
But let’s talk about this evolution of this ‘innocence’ line.
In this scene, when Red asks him why he did “it”, Andy simply replies, “I’m innocent, Red, just everybody else here.”
Just like everybody else here.
Andy knows he’s innocent, and he knows that everybody else probably isn’t, but he says it anyway. He plays along to the saying. It’s almost like he’s making his innocence claim non-believable.
Fast forward to this scene:
“Me? Lawyer f*cked me.”
There you go, he plays along again. I guess this is what so many years in prison does to you— at some point, you get out of denial and you accept your situation because you know it’s long before you “go back”, and you just start playing along.
Nevertheless, another thing I’d like to mention is that none of Andy’s friends ever believed him. Like ever. Sure, they all liked Andy, and they enjoyed his company, but at the end of the day, they believed he killed his wife and her lover. They believed he was like them all—a criminal, spewing lines of fake innocence.
But then there’s this scene:
This scene. Now he knows, and has proof that he is innocent. Something he’s known for a very, very long time. But his reaction.
He doesn’t immediately pin Tommy down and ask him to confess and help him get out of there.
Instead, he processes that information. It’s almost as if all this time, Andy was trying to convine himself that he was in prison for a reason, and in the process, he was inevitably convincing everyone else around him.
And that, I guess, makes this scene so much more beautiful, and so much more powerful.
Maybe I am just overthinking it, maybe I am not. I like to believe this movie has depths and dimensions beyond my understanding. If you read everything so far, thank you so much, and let me know if there’s something different you feel. Cheers!
Can we just?

IMDB Best of 2023
Movies:
Totally agree with the 1st place! Best film of the year.
Also Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 was great. It was emotionally hard to watch this movie 😭 Oh, Rocket...
Going to watch "Killers..." this weekend. I read the book and it will be interesting to watch how they transferred the plot to the screen. John Wick was good but not so good as JW2, I think.
TV Shows:
The Last of Us.. I was looking forward to this show. But I got nothing. I barely made it through the first season :(
Black Mirror. The episode with Aaron Paul was great!
One Piece.. YES! YES!! I bet you're surprised by my reaction 😂 Totally deserved!
"The Fall..." was good too. Haven't watched "The Bear" yet. Read a lot of good reviews.
