This week’s Featured Article is imeem, a social platform used by the vidding community for early live streaming in the mid-aughts. While vidders were still wary of YouTube, imeem enticed the community with good quality video and a smaller user base, which allowed more control over creative work, and the community embraced the platform in 2006.
Unfortunately, the site discontinued its video-hosting service with only five days notice, sending vidders scrambling to find a new home. The site ultimately shut down altogether when it was bought suddenly by MySpace at the end of 2009.
Learn more about this short-lived but impactful vidding host site on Fanlore.

Will the fate of Imeem become the fate of Soundcloud? (Lessons from a pre-Soundcloud Music network)
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Soundcloud has helped to cultivate an underground/independent digital music community and is currently having financial troubles. Soundcloud has helped break through many artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Pump, into the mainstream music industry but they also had to lay off a significant amount of their staff. Soundcloud is definitely a resourceful platform for music lovers and creators. However, I don't know if you remember Imeem, the social media network that enabled users to upload and share music online and with each other. But Soundcloud has many similarities to the Imeem music network of the early 2000s.
When Soundcloud came out, or when it became know to me and other artists in New Jersey, I immediately thought about Imeem. Soundcloud is very similar to how Imeem was in its functionality and cultivating a music community fans and creators. On Imeem like Soundcloud, you were able to embed the songs you upload and add the code to your Myspace page so that people can check out your new song or favorite song by your favorite artist. Soundcloud also has some of the same problems Imeem had.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
There are two problems with Soundcloud that were problems with Imeem:
1. Soundcloud does not allow independent creators monetize their music, podcasts, or audio books directly on its platform. If you are an independent artist, you have to find a third party company in partnership with Soundcloud in order to monetize your original work. By allowing all creators who are releasing their original content on Soundcloud to monetize with ads, could help with Soundcloud's financial problems while also allowing more artists to get paid for their work.
2. They put limits on how much you can upload without paying a subscription fee. There is not many music or creator community that are charging users for uploading content. YouTube is creator community that do not put limits on how much you can upload before you have to sign up for a subscription. (Please note, Youtube has recently changed their monetizing policy, requiring YouTube channels to have 10,000 views before being able to monetize their original content.) The bulk of Soundcloud's users are creators and the creators bring their fans or listeners to the Soundcloud platform, who then become users. Why pay to release more of my music on Soundcloud, when I can release more of my music on YouTube at no additional cost?
This is why I keep thinking about Imeem. When I was releasing my first songs on the internet under the rap name Billy Battz Da Hitman, I was using Myspace and Imeem. Imeem and Myspace allowed you to upload as much music as your wanted but it did not give you an option to monetize on your profile, at least not for independent underground artists. At that time, I was not even thinking about monetization but now, if online creator platforms are not enabling creators to monetize their works, then they are not good platforms. Soundcloud's lack of monetization access for its users will contribute to Soundcloud's financial problems.

Lastly, there are talks about a major company like Deezer purchasing Soundcloud. Maybe a social network like Facebook will place a bid on Soundcloud. But, what happened to Imeem? Imeem was acquired by Myspace in 2009, integrating into Myspace Music, and that was last you heard of the pre-Soundcloud music community. It is also the last time I heard some of my pre-Billy Badnewz music as Imeem did not transfer its music archive over to Myspace or sync accounts so that artists did not have to re-upload music to "Myspace music". (Maybe that is the real reason I am writing this post lol.)
On Imeem's defuncted facebook page, users lamented the Myspace asquistion as the "The biggest mistake ever". The fate of Imeem was integreating into Myspace Music while Myspace began to lose popularity to Facebook in 2009. Myspace is a online ghost network which makes Myspace Music or "Imeem" a online ghost music community. Just like you may not remember the pre-Soundcloud music community Imeem, you may not remember Soundcloud once it is acquired by a company like Facebook or Deezer.
Will the fate of Imeem become the fate of Soundcloud?
