Somewhere in this photo is a blue heron eating a freshly caught fish. This is an example of how something exists even if you can’t see it. Like mental illness. This week, my mental health journey brought me to a major breakthrough. But I didn’t just have it. The new awareness came from months upon months of hard work in therapy, as well as at home, and a commitment to faithfully taking my medication. To doing the work. Like other illnesses, mental illness can require treatment. That doesn’t mean the person failed, or is somehow less than. They’re not broken, either. Just as a diabetic needs insulin, so, too, do some people need antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicine, or a combination. It is a choice to see someone with an illness as damaged. As someone to be avoided. I choose to see myself as a survivor. As someone who is willing to delve into the dark places so that I can heal.
