Thank you all for the birthday love. Low key celebrating at home because pandemic, y'all. Got to spend some quality time with the corgis, ate some delicious food, played some #ACNH, and spent a little bit of the day pretending the rest of the world doesn't exist (because it's a trash fire). Also busted out my favorite Fellowships Sandras (second pair, different colorway) for a little brightness and cheer. Also, Aragorn got me a dulce de leche birthday cake and it's fucking delicious (and had @squidbrains make a super adorable portrait for me). Plus, we had sangria. On a more serious note, today also marks 100 years since the ratification of 19th amendment, allowing many women the right to vote. It is IMPORTANT to recognize that although this was a pivotal moment in US history, it did NOT grant voting rights to all citizens. Native Americans didn't have the right to vote til 1948, Asian women til 1952 and it wasn't until 1965 The Voting Rights Act allowed black women to vote! And for my fellow Mexican Americans, and Americans of Central and South American descent (under the blanket terms of "hispanic" or "latino/a" designed to erase entire cultural identities) voting rights did not fully come to fruition til nearly a decade later with the Voting Rights Act extension of 1975. This ended discrimination against so-called “language minorities,” the Mexican Americans of TX and CA, Puerto Ricans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Alaskans, Hawaiians and others who continued to be kept from voting (note: Puerto Ricans still cannot vote in federal elections, WTF?!) So while we celebrate these achievements in history, we must understand the full, true history.
