Impetuous

(adj.) acting or done quickly and without thought or care; moving forcefully or rapidly.

Nan’s impetuous decision to quit her job and move abroad surprised everyone who knew her cautious nature.

It comes from the Latin impetuosus, derived from impetus, meaning “attack” or “assault.” The word entered English in the late 14th century, initially describing physical force or violent motion before broadening to describe rash, hasty behavior in people.

🧠 Think of impetuous as sharing its root with impetus. Both carry that sense of a rushing, unstoppable force. When someone is impetuous, they act like a force of nature: fast, powerful, and not easily redirected.
