“My feelings for Link…?” She heard her solemn voice echo throughout the twilight before she banish the thought from her mind. It didn’t matter what she thought of the hero; it never mattered. Their relationship was one of trust and friendship she had never experienced in her life. They were partners; one couldn’t go on without the other. That was all… right?
It didn’t matter it didn’t matter it didn’t matter it didn’t-
There it was; her true feelings fell from her lips like honey. The princess couldn’t stop herself and couldn’t hide it anymore nor could she hide the mist in her eyes. There was nothing to be done though. The mirror had been shattered beyond repair; she had made sure of that.
“He’s gone but I love him.” so so so so much!!!
His laughter still haunted her thoughts; his light filled smile appeared again and again in her dreams. She constantly drowned herself in her duties and studies, he always came back to torture her mind and tug at her drumming heart. It was a never ending cycle of misery and love that Midna knew would follow her until dying breath.
It wasn't the first time he had dreamt of his return to the Twilight Realm, and Link doubted it would be the last. Something as important -- as memorable -- as this place would never be able to easily leave his mind, and the Hero didn't want to forget it. The world might have been trapped in never ending darkness, and it might have been the antithesis of everything he was, but there was a part of him that longed to return to this place.
The wolf the had been awakened inside of him wanted it, and part of his heart did as well.
Link didn't know what emotion he would use to describe how he felt towards Midna, but he knew that there was an overwhelming want left towards her. She had been his dearest companion and friend for so long, and on some level he had loved her. Seeing her as she really was had sparked something deeper in him --
and then she had vanished. Forever.
The path to her throne room was one he had never walked save for in his dreams, and he found himself walking almost as if in a trance towards it now. His boots thudded dully on the smooth ground, the sound swallowed up by the darkness around him.
She was always at the end of this path, and the dream always ended when he was close enough to reach out towards her. He had taken to standing a ways from her and just staring, allowing himself time to memorize every line of her back (because she was never facing him) before causing the dream to shatter around him.
She was speaking, pouring out her emotions in just a few broken words-- but it was a knife in his heart. Link drew in a sharp breath before stepping forward sharply, unable to stop himself, and reaching out--- and touching her.
Midna didn't vanish. The dream didn't crumble around her. Instead, his hand touched smooth skin as he reached out to take a hold of one of her hands. "Midna..."
It was just a dream, but what a cruel one to allow him even this brief moment of interaction. It would make its end that much more agonizing.
