Cass headcanon that goes hand in hand with canon
Hey, i’m a big cassandra cain fan and after learning more about her surprise surprise when i discover she was never actually nonverbal / mute, but when being in a Dc fandom as large as this, things tend to get mixed up or learning things tend to hit you at a slower pace if you’re learning at a different character at a time.
(Also its a popular headcanon)
But i’d also really like the idea if cass WAS nonverbal, specifically selective mutism like, she grew up in an environment with controlled and very few basic building blocks (from my understanding.) and despite being a quick learner or quick to pick up on things.
i would LOVE if she also got overwhelmed with this knowledge occasionally, like she could learn three nicknames for a person and yes she knows nicknames are a thing since everybody calls her cass, she’s not stupid but imagine she’d never considered the possibility of shortening this persons name even FURTHER and just being overwhelmed by the idea.
For example damian could tell her giraffes have seven neck bones and she could just blank and then Duke is coming in with the ‘oh yeah did you know sheep are in the giraffe branch family?’ and Cass… is taking a minute to process it.
And-
suddenly she can’t speak and ask more because damn. Sheep? Giraffes?
This doesn’t happen at ALL on cases because she’s seen all sorts of weird shite but in social interactions? The most mundane things ever? she’s the most whelmed she’s possibly been.
I understand she’s very social in some comics and such but that’s the thing with selective mutism, you don’t choose when your voice shuts down, you could be chattering like a parrot running on adrenaline and the next as quiet as a koala. (Which is why i think its the perfect headcanon)
