It’s been a long day of holiday festivities in Dedede castle. Kirby & Bandana Dee sleep on the side of Dedede’s majestic throne. The large and fluffy King Dedede sits upon his plush seat, staring right back at the small, but handsome Meta Knight, napping atop the King’s soft & round belly. The big penguin smiles, knowing he’s surrounded by the people he cares about.
His mind begins to wander between the multitude of memories this group of misfits have experienced. From picnicking in the lush Green Greens, to traveling between planets & dimensions. Trials endured, villains defeated, snacks devoured.
… rivalries forged.
Dedede still remembers the first time he ever fought Kirby. They both fought with everything they had, only for the selfish king to be humiliated in front of his entire army. That humiliation cultivated into a taste for revenge, encapsulated into a powerful mask. Hammers swung left and right, clashing each other with colossal force. In the end, however, it was the same result. A king, once again, defeated.
… but not humiliated. Even as he walked down the road, sorrowful of his defeat, he couldn’t help but feel some form of respect for his rival. No matter the circumstances, no matter the dire straits, the pink puffball always prevailed. And even when the King acted in his selfish ways, the same puffball would want to be friends. Despite denial after denial, pushback after pushback, there was no denying Kirby’s unconditional love.
“Dedede?” The King snaps out of his daze, looking over to see a worried Kirby standing behind the left armrest. “Why are you crying?” the puffball asks. Confused at the statement, the penguin king rubs his face, finding small wet stains on his glove right after. Was he actually crying? “Uhhhh I-I wasn’t crying,” Dedede answers, “I was just… out in the snow a bit ago, and then it… melted?” Looking back at Kirby’s sorrowful eyes, he knows that lie fell flat on its face. Dedede lets out a heavy sigh.
“Do you remember our first romp?” the penguin asks, “The moment you and I became rivals?” Kirby ponders for a bit, thinking back to the first time they met. “Yeah! I remember the large crowd cheering you on,” Kirby replied, “You were really tough!”
“Was I?” Dedede ponders, “I remember you steamrollin’ me in no time flat!”
“But you still tried!” the puffball counters, “And then, you tried again! And you were even tougher! That mask of yours was really cool.”
“Well of course it was cool!” Dedede says proudly, “I couldn’t just fight you again without adding a little flare into it. Even if you did beat me so easily, at least I looked cool doing it-”
“Don’t say that,” Kirby says. The King does a double take, unable to give a response before the pink hero continues. “You are not weak, Dedede. You are very strong. Strong enough to look after your kingdom. Strong enough to defend an entire horde of beasts. Strong enough to… protect the ones you love.” King Dedede blushes. Not wanting to admit how much he truly cares about Kirby, he simplys says “Well of course I’m strong! Gotta keep you lot from causin’ so much trouble around here.” Kirby giggles, stoic and egotistical tone of the King’s exterior sneakily hiding his soft interior. Some things never change.
“But also… I am glad you’re my friend, Kirby,” Dedede admits, “Even if you can be an annoying little goober… I wouldn’t trade ya for the world.”
“Bandana Dee also? And Meta Knight too?” the excited puffball asks. The bombastic penguin chuckles. “Of course,” he answers. And before he can say anything else, Kirby jumps up to Dedede’s chest, giving the biggest hug the small being can muster. “Thank you, Dedede.”
The King sighs, putting his arm around the pink troublemaker. “You’re welcome, Kirby.”
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
