And in this I have made mistakes with this rule. Mistakes I regret. Not in me crossing these two, but in making this my absolute hard rule to the point that I disregarded anothers feelings. Something I will forever regret. A hard learned lesson that took away not just a roleplay I adored but cost me a friend. A mistake I took to heart and learned from and have work hard to not repeat.
However this rule for me still stands in its basic form. I ask and will always ask those I role play with not to take OOC into our IC and not to take what happens IC personally or lash out at me OOCly about IC situations.
Instead I ask that you come to me if you feel something is bothering you so we can talk about it like adults and try to come to a compromise. Or if all else fails end the role play itself. New role plays can always be started. Ruined friendships/rp partner relationships are much harder to fix, if even they can be.
I think we all understand that none of us are perfect. We grow attached to our characters, their stories. We put a lot of time and work into building them up. So it upsets us when they are hurt or done wrong or you feel that the story you were building is suddenly being ripped apart.
And that is okay.
What isn’t okay is when someone takes those feelings about IC out on a roleplay partner. If it gets to a point someone is taking IC character actions personally and lashing out OOCly. Its time to take action. Figure out a way to resolve it so everyone can feel comfortable again. Or if unable to come to a resolution for the roleplay, just end the role play itself. Its not worth losing a rp partner. Its definitely not worth losing a friend.
Same with OOC. If someone is taking OOC information into IC this needs to be fixed. Such activity will quickly ruin a role play, but worse quickly ruin the trust between the two writers.
We are human, we make mistakes. Just please remember writers are not their characters. Keeping IC and OOC separate is really important to most of us who write and roleplay.
However also understanding your partner sometimes might get upset about things that happen in IC is also important. Communicate. Find something what works for you both. Or let the role play go. Start something new that you both can agree on instead.
Okay so this got a bit longer than I intended. But this rule is extremely important to me. Not just the keeping them separate which to me is extremely important. But also talking about it if it becomes an issue and making sure your partner knows they are what is really most important.
