Thoughts on Joey Wheeler & the Value of Loyalty and Ambition
Ok so for the second day of the #FebYgoChallenge I will talk about Joey Wheeler. Huh...figures. At the end, I was really surprised myself that Joey of all people ended up being the one to talk about. The first that came to my mind was actually Atemu but then I changed my mind, though it was a difficult decition.
Joey, very much like Yugi, changed throughout the series. He was, in regards to my post about Yugi...the other side of the coin. The mean bully, simply enjoying others feeling awful because of him and the power he had over them. He resulted as Yugis best, most caring and most loyal friend of them all. That is a very nice message and very inspiring, too. It gives hope that everything can turn out just fine, you just need to work for it. His loyalty and devotion to his close ones is admirable and since it shows so often, sometimes underappreciated. He cares deeply for his sister, to the point that he wanted to scrap up the money for her operation even though thats should have been the obligation of the parents. He cares deeply for Yugi, as seen on many occations. The strongest example being the episode where he was forced to duel him to death by Marik at Battle City. However, he grew not only in heart but also in his dueling abilities. He didn’t have as much talent for dueling as Yugi had but he still did his best and, slowly but constantly, became better and better. He was not giving up and stayed ambitious even though he was constantly standing in Yugis shadow. I respect that a lot, being a competetive person that compares herself with other people constantly which usually doesn’t end well for my self-confidence at all. Joey didn’t let that dragg him down at all. He was cocky, confident and improved a lot. In fact, he became so good, that he would have won his dark duel with Yami Marik after being hit by an friggin’ Egyptian GOD ...if he wouldn’t have collapsed. For me, though, that doesn’t diminish the success and the win, really. I think that moment especially was the one that made me decide to choose Joey for the runner up.
