in-class exercise week 5 part 1
Wednesday was the first class of the semester for Entrepreneurial Design. We (the teaching staff) introduced ourselves, met the students, went over the basics of the course, and dropped a massive surprise on the students.
Instead of having a whole semester to do their $1000 project, they have just 3 weeks to go through the whole process.
Wait, wait, don't panic yet! This change may seem scary, but what it should mean is that this year's class will spend less time fixating on finding the perfect idea or polishing things that are ready to ship. It means that they will go through the whole cycle of ideating, testing, launch, promotion, and iterating quickly and with little opportunity for overanalyzing or languishing in indecision. It is, we think, akin to Kickstarter's decision to cut the maximum length of a project from 90 days to 60—no need to drag out the suffering in the middle for longer than necessary.
While this year's class will certainly move at a brisker pace than previous years', it also comes with more hands-on guidance. For the second half of class, we ran an ideation exercise that asked the students to come up with project ideas based off of an active verb and a potential audience. The post-its here are some randomly selected results for "cleaning" and "astronaut".
Over the next week, the students will be writing their first blogpost, doing 750words daily, and, of course, coming up with lots of ideas for their $1,000 projects. They will also be reading the following:
Learning Entrepreneurial Hustle by Jon Kolko
Studying Entrepreneurship Without Doing It by Seth Godin
Last year's postmortem summary
If you'd like to follow along, we've put our syllabus up here. It's going be updated continually throughout the semester based on the needs of the students.
Briana's reading response
Color 1: Blue.
American express: confidants, loyalty, secure, devotion, intelligence.
Personal thoughts: they are a credit card company and all they want is your money so I think they did a really great job with the color to get people to wont them over all the other credit card company’s out there. He logo is crisp and the color makes me feel safe in putting my money in so they did a good job!

Color 3 Purple:
Hallmark: enlightenment, imagination, empathy, sensuality, extravagance, elegance, royalty, majesty.
Personal thoughts: when I think of hallmark I think of high price very cute cards and knickknacks, I also thin of the hallmark channel on TV which shows really emotional based movies. When I think of purple think of the kings and Queens in the old time and how they were the only ones to wear purple because it was the most expensive color to make and die. He logo is soft and scripted with a crown makes me feel expensive and loving.
FedEx: knowledge, dignity.
Personal thoughts: I don’t really like the color for the logo... The logo is genius! But I just don’t see the genius in the color it doesn’t send me any of the feelings that purple stands for in my book... But it does look good.
Color 4 Green:
Starbucks: wealth, good luck, growth, freshness, youthfulness, hope, friendliness.
Personal thoughts: Starbucks is a “cool” company rich people love to be in the tabloids with a “Starbucks” in there hand so now a days I think of money and hipness with I think of the Starbucks logo but I’m sure that when they started off they weren’t thinking of taking over the world so when I think of the logo when it first started the green probably would have just seemed organic and friendly to me.
John Deere: Endurance. Good luck, dependability, fertility, growth, environment, hope.
Personal thoughts: make and sell agricultural machinery I think green is the perfect color ad any other color would be wrong! The color makes it feel manly rustic and ready for come green grass.
Color 5 brown:

Chris O's Passion
I am passionate about many things, so one of them is about being at certain places, so the the beach. I enjoy being outdoors so a day at the beach is so relaxing and feels naturally good to walk on the sand with no shoes. I like to look at the the waves because it is like a story when you watch a wave form. Waves slowly roll close to shore and becomes this wall of water. Sometimes you can see through a wave. Then waves crash over the water and come to shore. One of my favorite outings is to spend my day on a beach.
I think being on the coast is a passion because of the time in my life i lived in SoCal, i must have made hundreds of memories with my friends going to the beach and hanging out there. Have you walked down the shore and found shells, sun glasses, and your friends?
