From the top of my TBR: In An Absent Dream by @seananmcguire. ⚜️ Do you read novellas? I really like that you get just a slice of story. I think it works especially well in horror. I’ve really loved the Wayward Children series. I’ve always wondered about kids post-Narnia, and I think McGuire’s take is the closest to what I’d imagined. In this 4th installment, we follow Katherine Lundy, who some may from remember Every Heart A Doorway, as Eleanor’s “young” friend and the children’s therapist. In this wonderfully atmospheric novel, we get to battle society’s expectations with Katherine, as she struggles with how she is expected to be quiet and proper, and to become a “wife” one day, as if this title is everything she has to look forward to. So when a doorway opens, Lundy enters. Unlike other worlds we have travelled to, Lundy is able to go back and forth between The Goblin Market and her home world. She skips between them, struggling with others’ expectations and her own desires.  Caught between promises made to her friends in The Goblin Market, and obligations that are expected of her, from her mother and sister, in the real world, Lundy is battling an inner dilemma of loyalties. But in this world, not giving equally to what you receive could mean paying an ultimate price. Lundy is afraid that by not meeting the expectations around her, she is going to end up at a deficit, which would result in her being turned into an animal. I loved this world’s mix of strict logic and whimsical magic. .
