Hi, hope your doing well :) This is a little strange so feel free to ignore this if you want to.
I'm translating a video where someone used the phrase 父亲是刚刚恢复高考后的 and when I asked DeepSeek what that means, it "typed" out its answer but once it finished the answer disappeared and a message in Chinese popped up saying that it won't answer that. So I take it that it's a sensitive topic somehow... But do you have any suggestions what to put in the translation? Like does the sentence imply that the father was born at that time or more generally that he is of that time, or is it actually a euphemism for something completely different?
(As far as I can tell the video itself is not about any sensitive topics, it's personal but not overtly political or anything.)
谢谢和对不起
I didn't have any issues with Deepseek translating it to English (prompt: "How would you translated 父亲是刚刚恢复高考后的 to English?"; "The translation of "父亲是刚刚恢复高考后的" to English is "My father is someone who just resumed taking the college entrance examination.") .
When I asked "What does 父亲是刚刚恢复高考后的 mean?", it returned an error the first time but returned an answer when I asked again later:
The phrase "父亲是刚刚恢复高考后的" translates to "Father is from the period just after the resumption of the college entrance examination" in English. It refers to the time when the college entrance examination (高考, gāokǎo) was reinstated in China after a long hiatus, particularly after the Cultural Revolution. The phrase suggests that the father experienced or was part of that significant educational and societal change.
"What is the meaning of 父亲是刚刚恢复高考后的?" returns
The phrase "父亲是刚刚恢复高考后的" translates to "My father is someone who just experienced the restoration of the college entrance examination." In the context of Chinese history, the college entrance examination, known as 高考 (gāokǎo), was reinstated in 1977 after being suspended during the Cultural Revolution. This phrase suggests that the speaker's father was part of the generation that went through this significant educational transition in China.
It's not really euphemistic so much as it indicates a significant time in society. I wonder Deepseek will answer with an error if you ask again because as far as I know, it's not a sensitive topic whatsoever, and is actually quite important.

Potentially it returned an error at first if your question was too broad... I'm not really familiar with which topics Deepseek censors but maybe an initial search for answers intersected one of those topics.
Depending on the context, the usage in whatever you're translating could imply that the person's father was quite talented if he got into college then, as the class of 1977 was extremely competitive; 5.7 million took the gaokao and only 4.3% were admitted to colleges.
