Sources of Color: Incandescence

One of the most well known causes of color is incandescence, or the emission of electromagnetic radiation (light). When objects are heated, their thermal energy is released in the form of photons, a phenomenon known as black body radiation. The color of an incandescent object is related directly to its temperature. Red is the “coldest” form of incandescence, with objects turning orange, yellow, white, and then, at the hottest, blue. Phrases like ‘red hot’ and ‘white hot’ in English reference this.
