Bits of news from the Korean War, prisoners, whispers of atrocity, Just then I heard a fearsome racket from the road down by the Kankakee, The night Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge. My Dad appeared at the doorway, he said, “Call the sheriff right away, “Howard D” and Linda just flew by, like bats to hell, I’m going to see if they’re okay, He’s nothing but an aggravation, he’s no damn good if you ask me.” My Mom said, “Better hurry out there Robert, they might be needing help right away, It’s windy, cold and lonely tonight down by the Kankakee.” The night Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge. My sister said, “You know, I think Daddy’s right, Howie’s just plain hard and mean, Why just this morning Linda phoned me up, saying they had a terrible fight, She said he kicked out Kansas, drove down to the swamp and shoved him out the door, She was just a girl when she got that dog, she’d had him seven years or more. I told her I saw Kansas, lonely and lost last night on the road down by the Kankakee.” The night before Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge. No, it wasn’t long at all, my Dad came back in looking awful pale and kinda’ small, He never said much about what he saw that night But the schoolyard buzzed with the lurid tale alright Howard D, he walked away from that crash, saying he had no memory But Linda’s arm was tangled in the steering wheel, Her neck was severed by the windshield glass They found a collie’s headless body sprawled thirty feet out in the swampy grass They said they heard a howling through the misty moonlight over Dog Face Bridge. Some people say seeing is believing. Well, I don’t know about you, But I’ve seen a few… Things. I don’t want to believe. That was a long time ago, the road is only lonelier because the bridge fell down, Sometimes around Halloween kids looking for a thrill venture out from town. They say that if you stand just so, you’ll see a woman’s body with the head of a dog Beckon like Anubis from the water’s down below, but me, I don’t go, I can’t stand the sound of wind whistling through the trees I never drive alone on that road down to the Kankakee, I don’t want to see The place where Howard DeSabatine crashed his Chevy out on Dog Face Bridge.
