Pet Peeve: People Blaming Fat When Really What They Mean is Sugar
So I was reading this scientific study on food addiction: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352853215000243
And in the summary and the conclusion it stated “higher intakes of fat were associated with higher odds of FAD [food addiction]“ but when you actually look at what they say in the other areas of the study it really says, “The FAD group had a... higher percentage energy intake (%E) from energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods including candy, take out and baked sweet products“... THAT my friends, is almost exclusively SUGAR not fat!
And the same thing occurred in a TV show I watched called “The Secrets Behind Fat” or something (it was a while ago... it was on Lifestyle so not exactly a credible source :p). One of the segments was that they scanned her brain and compared it to that of obese people when they were shown various foods. She says “See how the brain lights up when shown these fatty foods” but then pictures of exclusively cake and desserts came up...
It just annoys me that people lump fat and sugar together and don’t even think of making them independent. And it really results in incorrect reporting of fact.
If someone had just read the summary of that study they would have come away with completely incorrect information... And that is why the dietary fat phobic culture still persists!
Rant Over.
Why did I pick a field in which diplomacy is a priority? In which one cannot directly quote a well-known scholar for fear of people who have not read the work misunderstanding? Or point out problematic approaches? My problem is that I view an issue and it makes me angry, even if it doesn't affect me, and I let that color my words. I should just not talk anymore. I inevitably have a totally unapologetic opinion that offends people, or I somehow put my foot in my mouth because my words are being misconstrued even if I understand what I'm saying, and then I have to feel bad about it (I'll get over it eventually). I used to not speak out very often in class. I should go back to that.
