In the late 19th century ‘baked beans’ used to actually be ‘baked bees’. Shortly before Coca-cola stopped using actual cocaine in its recipe, the Heinz family restaurant found a much tastier and cheaper substitute for the bees (not to mention more ethical!), and so now we have baked beans instead.
