well if anyone wants to read an incredibly depressing and miserable and very very good manga about parental emotional abuse, i highly recommend Blood on the Tracks
completely fucked up and very sad and very well written

Thank you for your post about Caleb. As a Jewish person who headcanons Caleb as fantasy Ashkenazi....I've always been tense and sorta upset when people try and compare his backstory to That. if you know what I mean.
I absolutely do know what you mean. But I think you may have been referring to @luckthebard’s post, not something I wrote myself. I collect a lot of Caleb meta, don’t write much of it myself.
In regards to the topic at hand, we as an audience reeallllly need to be aware that we can’t make 1:1 allegories to our own history. As Liam often reiterates, DND is a game. Game mechanics are an actual thing that I think are often overlooked when attempting to analyze potential outcomes or potential context of backstory. When that happens, or when we as the audience attempt to make direct comparisons to our own history/cultures with the story the Critical Role cast are telling, it does them both a disservice. Nuance and context would be lost with direct comparisons, and sometimes that can make or break how we interpret or enjoy what’s happening. And in regards to That Particular comparison, it’s plain inaccurate, if you know literally anything about that period of our history.
I generally enjoy stories most when parts of it are left deliberately ambiguous. It’s leaves room for many avenues of interpretation and relatibility. That Liam has also directly negated the HY comparison, is something of a relief to me. But the fact that so much about Caleb reminds me of my Jewish relatives, and that this perception seems pretty prevalent amongst CR’s audience, makes his acting choices all the more fascinating. And it really makes me wonder about the apparent religious oppression of the Dwendalian Empire. TL:DR, I preciate you comin round to mention this, because you are not alone in finding the comparison distinctly uncomfortable.
