god I watched the attempted King Gus assassination again and it’s such an excellent combat, the set up and pay off of the player choices is insane,, Hal choosing to stay separate letting him break the other spell caster’s concentration just in time to put Gus’s druid back in play,, Bolaire and Azune both putting up See Invisibility as soon as they arrive on the scene letting them later take out the mage keeping the doors closed,, Azune carefully setting up the Magpie’s presence so they can be on the scene as soon as those doors open to immediately turn the numbers in their favour,, Hal disguising himself at the beginning so he could later try to help handle Filoneus without blowing up his spot with the Creed
and fucking every single thing Marisha did just a sick combat for her, by the end of the first round Murray was the only functioning ally in that room and completely outnumbered and she carefully held that invisibility like a champ,, helping Gus get his weapon, stopping 4 attacks with that shield glyph, only revealing herself once Gus and the druid were back in action, using her other portent roll to keep up the crown of madness Bolaire had cast,, plus the dastardly diabolical move of trying to use a portent on Yanessa’s death save revealing the whole plot in the only way Brennan hadn’t anticipated,,, this might be recency bias but it’s gotta be up there as one of the great crit role combats if only for Marisha, it’s a barn burner

They're wearing swimsuits, Yasha's is a black one-piece and Veth's is a yellow bikini with a teal sheer robe worn over top. Both of them are holding ice creams, Yasha's is scoops in a cup that she's eating with a tiny plastic spoon and Veth's is a 99 flake. Veth's looking up at Yasha, who's smiling back at Veth. re: this week's episode,
I really don’t want to open this can of worms because Tumblr hath no fury like people called out on their political performativeness but it is literally driving me up the wall to watch people react to Serkis’ ‘keep Tolkien white’ commentary by insisting twice as hard that Tolkien would descend down to earth and dropkick the entire Republican party to hell or whatever, just because they want to ensure that a piece of media they enjoy isn’t seen as being morally impure. Case in point: I have seen at least five instances of Tolkien’s ‘I hate apartheid’ valedictorian address being used as a ‘counter’ to Serkis being racist, including by actual news outlets.
Except it’s only ever the ‘I hate apartheid’ line that’s shared, and not the actual quote in its full context. Because here it is:
If we consider what Merton College and what the Oxford School of English owes to the Antipodes, to the Southern Hemisphere, especially to scholars born in Australia and New Zealand, it may well be felt that it is only just that one of them should now ascend an Oxford chair of English. Indeed it may be thought that justice has been delayed since 1925. There are of course other lands under the Southern Cross. I was born in one; though I do not claim to be the most learned of those who have come hither from the far end of the Dark Continent. But I have the hatred of apartheid in my bones; and most of all I detest the segregation or separation of Language and Literature. I do not care which of them you think White.
Which is to say. This isn’t exactly the antiracist quote of the century, to say the least. This is a white South Africa born man and a white Australian shaking hands and going ‘omg we relate’ and expressing what is a very, very mild ‘segregation is not great’ opinion in order to convey his thoughts on an academic subject, ie the confluence of language and literature. Using race to make a point about his own subject of interest, in his own interest, which is, amusingly enough, what a lot of ostensibly well meaning progressive seem to be doing.
I also think that some of the general surprise around ‘what do you mean large swathes of the Tolkien fandom are incredibly conservative!?’ in lib/left Tolkien fandom is the result of a tendency in said parts of the fandom to transpose one’s own progressiveness onto Tolkien and turn a blind eye to things like, say, the Shire being a very specifically mid-century British racist construct that is very, very clear in its politics, often going so far as to insist it’s anarchist or an ideal society or whatever the fuck… and then getting really Pikachu-meme ‘but they’re misreading it’ every single time a conservative explains exactly what it is about the legendarium that they really love, and get surprised when someone uses the Shire being a racist construct to do more racism. It is 2026 let us do away with ‘I don’t see colour’ interpretations of media, I beg. Nobody is cancelling you for enjoying a book that is not kind to race. Most of the books I love are not kind to race.
Remember "I've been using you"/"I was starving and I was tired of starving. And then I met you and I wasn't so hungry anymore" haha that was crazy. That was so crazy, when he said that. Do you remember that. Do you remember wh. when he. When.
I love her so much it hurts
Nott is not enjoying her time at sea
friendly reminder that nott the brave knows four languages and is second only to caleb "eidetic memory" widogast in intelligence
even friendlier reminder that she once made viable acid in the back of a moving cart and has amateur glassmaking skills
friendly reminder that nott managed to reverse engineer a gun and bullets in order to craft her own ammunition, and reassemble the gun afterwards in a world where none of the party (but her!) had even heard of gunpowder or dynamite before.
friendly reminder that while caleb did teach her magic, they share very few spells, and two of them she knew first meaning that, though he taught her the basics, she figured out the vast majority on her own.
friendly reminder that while caleb and beau tend to be the ones to roll investigation in the party, it is nott who has the highest investigation of the mighty nein — meaning that if you hand everyone the same puzzle, it is nott — not caleb — who has the best chance of figuring out what it does.
At one of the absolute lowest moments of her life, when she was alone, miserable, and dealing with extra layers of dysmorphia, she:
Managed to escape captivity, again
Created a new name for herself by anagraming her own name, and did so with tragicomedy
Learned how to pick lock and disarm traps (some. the rope ones. let's not get overexcited here)
Learned Thieves' Cant, which is no joke--it's more a complex code than a language
Left her entire life behind in search of a solution to the problem her own self had become
Learned how to spot an enemy's weak spots and use them to her advantage in a way few other people manage
And that's before she even meets anyone else. This is all stuff she likely puzzled out on her own, alone, homeless and starving, because no one else would trust a goblin. This is all stuff a terrified 25-year-old woman from a little farming village figured out by herself, while keeping her eyes on her goal, keeping her delightfully sharp sense of humor, and keeping a soft heart under all that nervous bluster.
And that's at level 1.
New shave, new dress, who dis?
More of me trying to figure out what the kids look like,
Try and touch the goblin I fucking dare you
Protective cat, do not approach
