I’ve been doing a complete re-read of Seanan McGuire’s InCryptid series. One of the main reasons for my re-read is for a giant spreadsheet/timeline I’ve put together. Conveniently, I’m also finishing up my re-read right before book 12 drops on 7 March. One of the random things I’ve started tracking is the chapter quotes. I love them, and it’s always fun to see if there’s a pattern, and who says what, when. So, just for fun, here’s some of the info I’ve gathered about these InCryptid Chapter Quotes:
Chapter quotes almost always match the POV protagonist’s gender for that book.
Exception: Book 10 (Calculated Risks) Chapter 8 has a chapter quote by Jonathan Healy. The POV protagonist for all of B10 is Sarah.
Exception: Book 11 (Spelunking Through Hell)
Chapter quotes are always from someone at minimum one generation up (age-wise).
Exception: Book 11 (Spelunking Through Hell). This is also the first book with a POV protagonist that has given chapter quotes in other books.
Book 7 (Tricks for Free) Chapters 7 and 8 are the first case of back-to-back chapters having quotes from the same character. In this case, Frances Brown.
Book 10 (Calculated Risks) Chapters 12 and 13 are the second case of back-to-back chapters having quotes from the same character. In this case, Jane Harrington-Price.
Book 9 (Imaginary Numbers) is the only book to have POV protagonist swap between two characters, Sarah and Artie. The chapter quotes also swap gender to match the POV.
Book 10 (Calculated Risks) is the first book without an Epilogue.
Book 11 (Spelunking Through Hell) is the first book with a quote from anyone from the Campbell Family Carnival.
Book 11 (Spelunking Through Hell) Chapter 13 and 14 are the first case of one quote responding to another.
S1 [1st short and/or novella with Sam as the only biped appearing - I may need to come up with a better abbreviation, but there are too many A characters to use it for Aeslin!] (The Recitation of the Most Holy and Harrowing Pilgrimage of Mindy and Also Mork) is the first piece from the Aeslin POV and includes an Aeslin quote.
A6 [6th short and/or novella with Antimony as the POV protagonist] (Singing the Comic-Con Blues) is the first to include a chapter quote with Alice listed as Alice Price-Healy. In all other chapter quotes by Alice, she’s listed as Alice Healy.
Alice, Evelyn, and Frances are all usually listed with their maiden names.
Angela, Enid, and Jane are listed with their married names.
While there are many quotes from Mary, likely because she’s the family babysitter, there are no quotes from Rose.
As of the end of Book 11 (Spelunking Through Hell), the chapter quote count is as follows:
