@incubusofficial's @brandonboyd finds Manila ‘magical’ and vice versa. “Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you!” the fans erupted into chants to greet Brandon Boyd, who just turned 42, two days prior to rock band Incubus’ Feb. 17 Manila concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “Y’all so sweet,” Brandon, obscured by the darkness of one of those in-between song lulls, said rather sheepishly. That seemed to be the closest thing to a spiel from the frontman, who blitzed through the 23-song set in a no-nonsense, almost utilitarian fashion, saying nothing more than a curt, “Thank you,” after every other number. But with Brandon’s commanding presence and the band’s bulletproof catalogue of hits that readily conveys angst, love or melancholy, who has time for perfunctory banter? Before long, he and the rest of the group were revving up for the third song of the night, the frenetic “Nimble Bastard,” that had him thumping his chest to the beat. Fist-pumping ensued. Over the years, Incubus—also composed of guitarist Mike Einziger, drummer Jose Pasillas, keyboardist Chris Kilmore and bassist Ben Kenney—has sophisticatedly infused such styles as funk, pop punk, metal and jazz into its melodic rock sound. And while these elements could be discerned throughout the band’s set, the music was still by and large relentlessly heavy. Incubus’ classics inspired the loudest sing-alongs. The feel-good “Paper Shoes” was laden with electronic synths, the type that brought to mind old-school science videos or documentaries. The crashing of cymbals and hip-hop-flavored turntable scratches collided in “Pardon Me.” The group’s take on “Need You Tonight,” meanwhile, was just as funky and jaunty as the original by INXS. As the mood changed from song to song, so did Brandon’s showmanship. There was an uncanny fluidity or lightness in his movements that meshed with the casual swagger of “Love in a Time of Surveillance.” “Glitterbomb” had Brandon banging his head, his long locks whipping every which way. Incubus in Manila 2018: A Fusion of Nostalgia and Euphoria

Incubus, one of the most popular and influential rock bands that ruled the 90s returned to the Philippines last Feb. 17, 2018 for a concert at the Araneta Coliseum.  It has been 3 years since their last Manila show and even if they have been here for a few times already, people still looked forward to that night as they received a very warm welcome from the crowd consisting of male and female fans from different generations.

Vocalist Brandon Boyd who just recently turned 42 a few days before the show was greeted by the audience with a short but sweet "Happy Birthday” chant as he went on stage. He smiled in appreciation and he looked like he didn't age that much.

Just like before, he rocked the stage with his undeniably stellar musical talent. From time to time, the audience sings along with him just like in “Wish You Were Here.”  It was a nice surprise when the band included a part of Pink Floyd's song with the same title towards the end of the song and the crowd cheered and screamed in delight. They also treated the audience with a cover of “Need You Tonight” by renowned rock band Inxs. It became a perfect transition from their impressive performance of "Stellar".

Their set list was actually a mix of old and new songs. As expected, the audience were ecstatic when they performed old fan favorites such as “Drive”, “Megamlomanic”, “Anna Molly” and "Nice To Know You", which resulted to a lot of head bobbing from the crowd. They truly enjoyed these songs from the band's earlier years, most probably because they grew up to these rock hits. So even until now, these songs never get old and it’s a pleasure to hear them together with the nostalgia that it brings. Aside from the old hits, the band also performed material from their latest album 8 like "Glitterbomb", “Love in Time of Surveillance”, “Loneliest" and “Nimble Bastard". Despite being in the industry for decades, they keep on evolving, growing, and giving more people a taste of their music. With this, it just goes to show that after all these years, the band remains in the hearts of their numerous fans and they are definitely here to stay.

Hot Stuff: Beyond @brandonboyd Striptease, @incubusofficial In Manila Turned Out To Be One For The Books! 😆😆😆😆 On their third visit to the Philippines, Incubus held their concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum—the venue where they had their first show in 2011. Performing to a packed venue, filled with their loyalistas and new generation Incubus fans, they rocked the stage with a repertoire consisting mostly of songs from their current album 8. That, plus their well-loved hits spanning two decades. For their 8 tour, Incubus brought with them a circular LED screen filled with lights which were programmed to provide psychedelic visuals to their songs. With no other frills besides this, it was basically just the band and their music and it was just as glorious as any big production concert I’ve seen. From their 1999 album Make Yourself’were "Pardon Me" and "Drive"—their biggest hit to date—which made the crowd go expectedly wild. They also performed "Nice To Know You," "Wish You Were Here," and "Warning" from 2001’s Morning View, and "Anna Molly" from 2006’s Light Grenade. Incubus made sure fans had more than their fill of their favorite alternative band. (Personally though, I was hoping that they did one of my personal favorites, "Are You In," which I loved singing at my gigs or even at the KTV! The night wouldn't be complete without seeing the abs of the band’s frontman Brandon Boyd, which he slowly revealed layer by layer. And in each article of clothing removed, the crowd went cray cray, chanting, "Take it off!" 'Cause, c’mon the night ain't gonna be complete without ‘em. Over two decades later, Incubus is still on the top of their game when it comes to owning that stage with a presence uniquely all their own and the distinct vocals of Boyd which sounds like it’s still 1995.
