As soon as I saw Lara Estrada's face -in John Legend's music video, You & I -I knew she was the same girl I went to high school with her. While attending Independence high school, I can remember seeing her face stand out in the sea of forty-four hundred kids faces, all of which were predominantly varying shades of brown . I marveled at her beauty, truly and without even knowing her or the full extent of her skin condition, I wished I had white eyelashes just like her, in my opinion (then and now) she was as bad-ass as Storm the weather wielding X-men and don't even get me started on the white streak in Lara's hair! As it turns out the skin condition,Vitiligo, had an all too different affect on Lara. After reading her interview on, More Than My Skin, I can't help but wish that I told her exactly how awesome I thought she was to this little ol' freshmen. I mean, don't get me wrong we had thousands of kids at our high school on the east side of San Jose and she was a grade above me, SO maybe she would have taken one look at me and my crazy awestruck face and dismissed me, but at least I would have been able to tell her how beautiful I thought she was. As it turns out she looks to be doing just fine in her adult life, with her cameo in John Legends video. I am both happy and proud of my classmate. It is no small feat indeed to make something of yourself after coming from the east side of the valley let alone with a visible reminder of what sets you apart. You are beautifully inspiring, Lara Estrada!
