indesirable replied to your post:LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT HOMESTUCK
Thank you so much for writing this, it sounds really interesting and I will put it on my list for when I have little more time!
Of course!! I remember how amazingly confused I was when I learned Homestuck existed, particularly because so many people are intentionally confusing about it (not to mention there's stuff like this around). I googled it and after all this amazing fanart and shit it's......this???
aka a hopefully nice and easy answer to 'wtf is homestuck'
FIRST AND FOREMOST, it's a thing which is found here at mspaintadventures.com. The site started as comics drawn/written by Andrew Hussie in a choose-your-own-adventure style, with each panel drawn in mspaint (hence the title) and the story following suggestions readers gave in the online forum. The format carried over in the first two or three acts of Homestuck, but had to be abandoned for practicality's sake. This is one of the reasons why Homestuck feels so participatory and the fourth wall feels flimsy right from the get-go.
You may notice I'm trying to avoid calling it a webcomic. This is because it incorporates music, videos, even games that you play through. You must participate to read/consume it. It's one of the reasons that Homestuck gets so obsessive when you're going through it, particularly while marathoning. BE AWARE.
NOW! What is Homestuck about?????
John Egbert has no friends outside of his three BFFs online, who he's known for years. It's his thirteenth birthday, and he's planning on celebrating by playing the beta test version of a mysterious much-anticipated game called Sburb with them...as soon as he can get to it; dodging his overly affectionate Dad takes up a lot of Act 1. But when he does start playing, things start to go wrong. Very wrong. Apocalyptically wrong.
Turns out the game is an unfathomably ancient destiny device that creates and shatters universes, and John And Friends are the only ones who can beat it.
Anyway. You read most of the story through pesterlogs, aka chat logs between the characters, while they make a mad scramble towards victory in a world seconds away from starting its eternal war. It's meant to be a very straightforward war, but something goes wrong in their game and what should've been simple turns into everyone trying to just survive their impossible Final Boss.
So you've got kids fighting for their lives and their universe, thirteen-year-olds dealing with how hard it is to be thirteen, and then meddlesome trolls that you don't know if they want to help or harm, and it's just a rollercoaster of emotions in the end, it really is.
It is also REALLY FUCKING LONG. It's almost doubled in size since I started reading it.
I don't know what else to put here to avoid spoilers but still tell you what it is, sigh. The sense of humor in it starts out really fucking weird but it gets into you and you'll eventually find it hilarious after acclimatizing, which is basically what Act 1 is for. Act 1 is like the first level to a video game where it's like 'okay here's the controls, here's how you play the game, here's the basics' and then it takes off.
(If you get to "WV: Ascend" and you still don't like it, you probably never will, though.)
