Seltzer is basically carbonated water, which is either artificially injected under pressure or appearing naturally, which was quite famous back in the day in US. Hard seltzer, spiked seltzer or hard sparkling water is an alcoholic beverage containing carbonated water, alcohol, and often fruit flavoring. Most hard seltzers’ alcohol content hovers between 4 and 6 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), which is about the same as a light beer. Hard Seltzer hasn’t been introduced to India despite its great popularity in the states. The Excise department has however made provisions for the introduction of new and different kind of alcohol in West Bengal, don’t know about other states but still we haven’t been able to taste it. Would really like to know from the big brewers why haven't they tried to introduce it in India yet? I would have loved to try it out. Shinomon Chacko, 32, a resident of Kidangoor in Aluva, had made a Facebook post complete with a picture announcing his intention to illegally brew country liquor using pineapples, which he claimed to have brought in bulk from his wife’s house at Muvattupuzha.

Not stopping at that, he went on to ask for the blessings of everyone, including the excise department.

The post was widely shared on the social media and came to the notice of the Excise Commissioner who immediately alerted the Ernakulam Deputy Excise Commissioner.

The accused was charged under Sections 8 (1) and (2) of the Abkari Act.

Illegal brewing has soared exponentially across the State ever since liquor outlets and bars were closed at the start of the country-wide lockdown.

Swiggy has enabled home delivery of alcohol through the ‘Wine Shops’ category on its app. The service went live in Ranchi on May 21st after obtaining necessary approvals from the Jharkhand government, with other major cities in the state launching within a week.

Online food ordering platform Zomato, too, has launched home delivery of alcohol like rival Swiggy.

To begin with, the service will be available in Jharkhand and the company was in talks with multiple other states, Zomato said on May 21st.

“With due permissions and licences in place, we are starting home delivery of alcohol in Jharkhand,” the Gurugram-based company, Zomato has said on May 22nd. “We will go live in Ranchi later today and seven other cities in Jharkhand over the next couple of days.”

Meanwhile, the foodtech unicorns are also in advanced stages of discussions with multiple state governments to provide support with online processing and home delivery of alcohol.

Jharkhand Government calls in food aggregators for home delivery of Liquor

In order to avoid unwanted crowding at liquor shops, Jharkhand government has roped in food start-ups like Swiggy and Zomato to deliver liquor at people’s doorsteps in some of the big cities like Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Bokaro.

According to Excise and Prohibition Secretary Vinay Kumar Chaoubey, additional facility of e-token will be given to the people for purchasing liquor in other 15 small district headquarters through which they will be given preference over those standing in the queues at retail liquor shops.

“We have adopted hybrid system for making liquor available in some of the big cities like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Deoghr, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, Giridih and Palamu by opening the retail liquor shops where people can go and purchase liquor taking care of the social distancing. Secondly, people can get home delivery of liquor at their doorsteps through the two food aggregators – Zomato and Swiggy by downloading the app on their mobile phones,” said Chaubey to Newsexpress India.
