The two far left pieces were made using the Shibori folding/wrapping method and my homemade red and white onion dye. The next two and the far right piece were made by eco-dyeing; layering seasonal leaves, berries and flowersl from around my neighbourhood onto the fabric, rolling up, and then steaming for several hours to release the colour. The first was made with heather, red leaves, purple flowers and bamboo leaves, the second with red and white onion skins, and the last with yellow and blue berries. The second from right piece was made using the Hapa-Zome technique of hammering plant material directly into the cloth to create a print.
I’d really like to use these methods again in an installation based piece. I think it would be interesting to try and capture a geographic location using these methods with the use of embellishment, like artist Alice Fox. If I had had more time on this project I would have explored slower methods like solar-dyeing and composting over several months, to explore the passing of time and the effects of the elements on the textile and create a narrative of it.
