Book 46 of 2019. This has been my weekend read. A book with magic, mystery, evil lurking around the corner, summer school and forces of good and evil colliding. I haven't read a whole lot of Indian Young Adult lit so I was curious to give this a read. So far in, about 127 pages, I am thoroughly entertained and engrossed in this story. Plus, reading about Bombay, especially the history of Bombay is always fascinating. Ring In Wild Bells!

Another goes by, Another of the years left in our lives. For a moment, I sit back. And ponder what do I still lack? Some soul had entered during my emotional fever, Only to bid farewell forever. Some notes are left, some unfinished sentences, On the ripped pages of that diary I had decided to write my grievances. Much words weren’t said. Much indignation suppressed. Oh, how I wish my silence to break! Despite everything I want to protect for whoever’s sake! The demon sneers maliciously, And stirs the wolf viciously. The snake slithers to poison the nectar, And slowly devour you in life’s every sector. The angel cries and flaps its wings, For it wants every life to listen to it sing. Songs of hope, songs of love. Songs where the Prince finds his Dove. Songs where tears of joy prevail. Songs where humanity for victory sets sail. Songs of dreams as high as the sky. Songs of the souls who like to walk by The lanes of the brave, the lanes of the wise. Let loyalty and determination rise! As the day glides in, Let light enter within. So sing the song of the angels, And ring in wild bells! Let the mark that the goner left Be forever in your heart be kept. Be it for hope, be it for a lesson, All that happened was for some reason. Admit that there is darkness around And very little good that still in this world be found. But cower not at Chaos’s feet, And fighting for the light, lead it to its defeat. So sing the songs of the angels, And ring in wild bells!

The milk vessel gets me every time. She doesn't open the letter first. She notices the empty doorstep. That's who Janaki is ... she sees what's missing before she sees what's coming.And those curtains. She hemmed them herself in Bandra because the shop got the lengths wrong. They're never mentioned again but you feel them the whole way through. A woman who makes things fit. Who that costs when you have to leave. Then Leicester. February. A coat that isn't warm enough. And what does she do? Makes a list. Not because she's optimistic. Because she knows problems need edges. The last thing she adds to that list ... find the library ... I'd argue that's the whole story in three words. Parveen stops her on day three at the new job and says: you already know more than half these people, just don't let them see it all at once. One sentence. The entire experience of being a woman of colour in a British office in 1992, handed over like a tool, no explanation needed. The Dev crisis. Rajan keeps it from her for six weeks. Not because he's a bad husband. Because there's an old arrangement inside him ... what she carries, what he carries ... that neither of them chose and neither of them noticed until that kitchen table at 2am. 𝗜'𝗺 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝘀. Rajan. I am 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁. That line. That's the whole marriage right there. Go read it. It's not long.
