Arriving in India? Get a SIM Card Fast (or Stay Stuck Offline)
You land in India, turn off airplane mode… and nothing. No signal. No Google Maps. No Uber.
Just you, your bags, and a very confusing airport.
And somehow, everyone else already looks like they know exactly what they’re doing.
This is normal. And there’s a simple fix: get a local SIM card ASAP.
India is not really a “Wi-Fi everywhere” kind of place.
You’ll need mobile data for:
Google Maps (you’ll use this a lot)
Booking cabs (Uber / Ola)
WhatsApp (basically how everyone communicates)
Even finding your hotel sometimes
International roaming works… but it’s expensive enough to regret it fast.
A local SIM is just easier.
Which SIM should you get?
🔵 Airtel → easiest for first-timers, good city network
🔴 Jio → best coverage if you travel outside cities
🟡 Vi → okay, but not the strongest outside big cities
If it’s your first time → go with Airtel.
What you need (it’s simple)
Most stores don’t ask for anything else.
Your hotel address is usually enough.

Slightly more expensive, but very convenient
Official Airtel/Jio stores
You’ll need Wi-Fi first to find them
This is where people get confused:
Setup at store: ~15–30 minutes
Activation: 2 to 24 hours
So don’t panic if it doesn’t work instantly.
It usually activates later on its own.
For a tourist SIM (about 1 month):
Honestly, it’s one of the cheapest parts of your whole trip.
If someone outside the airport tries to sell you a SIM:
That’s it. Keep it simple.
The first hour in India can feel a bit overwhelming.
But once your SIM starts working, everything becomes easier almost instantly.
Maps start working. Cabs show up. The chaos makes sense.
It’s a small thing—but it changes everything.
