Nilüfer Yanya - Treason (Dancing Shoes EP, 2025)
recently i saw a video online of a somewhat well-known indie-folk singer. in the video she is being interviewed, and the question is posed: would she ever date a fan?
i will admit i didn't watch the interview in its entirety, or even the entirety of the single clip that was posted. i honestly didn't even hear her ultimate answer, but i was so taken with her immediate response that the answer seemed irrelevant. this somewhat well-known indie-folk singer asked for clarification as to whether this hypothetical fan was a "public figure" or a "private person".
i can't stop thinking about it. there's something so bizarrely debasing about it. where do you draw the line? does someone magically become a "public figure" when they reach 10,000 instagram followers? does a 17-year-old with a viral song on tiktok lose their right to being a private person after they have a certain number of monthly listeners? for this somewhat well-known indie-folk singer, is the distinction between a public figure and a private person just someone she respects? or is the distinction itself based on something even more arbitrary, and then the respect is based on the categorization?
unfortunately the real answer to any of this probably hovers somewhere in the neighborhood of: i am jealous. if i am being brutally honest, something i'm glad the anonymity of this blog allows me to be, i can admit that i think i am a better writer than this somewhat well-known indie-folk singer. i think i am a better writer than most. i think i have what it takes to be a public figure, i think i have managed to carve from the mountain some words that actually matter. but the fact remains that i can only scream them into the void of my small, private life.
i read somewhere once that anyone who wants to be famous is either wrong, lying, or insane. i've always known i was crazy and i've always craved the warmth of the spotlight; its heat. i just never suspected the correlation.
Forgiver - A Big Thief Bootleg Project
Over the past few years, Big Thief has accumulated a true treasure trove of unreleased material which has only ever been played live. How much material, you may ask? Well it turns out an entire full length double albums worth.
I've taken the liberty of going through and compiling various recorded live performances into a track list of 20 songs. The album, which I've tentatively titled "Forgiver" after the song of the same name, comes in at a staggering 1 hour and 20 minutes in total length. The tracklist and download links are included below.
Side A
1. Vampire Empire*
2. Horsepower
3. Words
4. No Machine
5. Born For Loving You
Side B
6. Seam
7. Free Treasure
8. Cactus Practice
9. Once a Bunch of Times
10. Forgiver
Side C
11. Wait a While
12. Happy With You
13. Ruined
14. If Love Is Blind
15. Happiness
Side D
16. Bright Future
17. Real House
18. Already Lost
19. Sadness as a Gift
20. Wanted You To Stay

* so technically Vampire Empire has now been officially released HOWEVER at the time when I started editing this together it was not yet out, and I think it fits into the tracklist really well so I wasn't too keen on removing it when it did release. Also I just like that specific live version I included, and its different enough from the official version where I think its justified in keeping it in.
Daughter - Be On Your Way (Official Video)
I’ve been a fan of Laura Veirs for years, ever since the magical track, Galaxies, came out. Vodka covered Veirs a couple of years ago, with the review of Everybody Needs You and also with Case, Lang, Veirs and Atomic Number. There is something about Veirs compositions and her voice, that has always made her instantaneously recognizable to me, and that’s not a bad thing.
Enter Turquoise Wall (seen / heard here) from Veirs latest long player, My Echo (October 2020), a collection tagged by Veirs as “My songs knew I was getting divorced before I did.” Throughout My Echo, Veirs tackles, through her lyrics, the struggle of maintaining meaning in her marital life. Her now ex-husband, Tucker Martine, was always part of her musical team. He was a great partner musically, producing a great many Veirs offerings, but the two struggled to find common ground in their marriage and family life.
There is no one-stop shop for information on Laura Veirs, but you can find more information by heading to her Facebook or Twitter accounts. You can pick up her music by heading up to her bandcamp.com site which includes all of the formats that you might like.
While Laura Veirs may not be a ‘dark corner’ artist in the strictest sense of the word, she is still often relegated to the corners of the musical spectrum. Many still don’t recognize her name in the music world. For that, she still deserves a spot on Vodka, in spite of her large cult following.
Check out the music of Laura Veirs now!
Note: With Covid-19 still around, probably to be with us for some time, artists like Laura Veirs and many others need your purchases to keep their heads above water. If your situation allows it, consider purchasing more in these tough times. –Vodka

♩♪♩ you enjoy twenty one pilot’s older music? I have an album you may like!
music in the muck by The Busy Nothing
this album has 7 songs, my favorite is “funeral with no home” . Christian Watson, the writer and singer, music has the feel of earlier twenty one pilots music, although no rapping. Unfortunately it’s not on spotify yet but hopefully that changes soon! I really enjoy the lyrics and the piano in his songs. Give some of it a listen if you got the time :D
Indie-folk outfit the Good Graces has released lead single off upcoming album.
