Infinity Train: Cult of the Conductor is really just some deeply dysfunctional family road trip. Simon and Grace are a couple who ran from home as teens and got married young and adopt this kid but she still has ties to a guardian who they’re racist towards and they start bickering over that. Samantha’s the Grandma that Dad has very mixed feelings about and she can be cool with granddaughter Hazel but Simon blows up about it after an awkward family dinner. But then he still goes back to her for advice when his wife isn’t “acting the way she’s supposed to” and say what you will about Samantha but while she has her disputes with her daughter-in-law, she still defends her on some basic feminist solidarity. But only a little because she does give her son the capacity to violate Grace’s privacy anyway so what do I know.
And basically Hazel has to deal with her parents arguing because Simon is too emotionally maladaptive to adjust to Grace having someone else in her life because his Mommy Issues expect Grace to be a leader for him in an almost caregiver kind of way where she handles the tedium of logistics and wrangling kids’ emotions while he plays fantasy in his own room. And Grace is a stressed-out mom who ran from her own toxic parents and grew up fast to become essentially a teen mom, and she engages in rebellious behavior as another means of projecting strength when she clearly is holding herself on by like a thread, constantly going back and forth in micro-managing everyone’s conflicting emotions while having little time for her own.
Grace telling Hazel to keep her denizen identity a secret and Hazel saying she shouldn’t have to hide who she is. A mother trying to protect her daughter from her abusive husband and how they just gotta play around Daddy’s eccentricities. She wants to have it both ways and can’t commit to cutting ties with her beloved to prioritize her own kid. And Amelia is the most bare-minimum, emotionally useless CPS agent you have ever seen and basically requires Hazel herself to go up to her and ask for her help.
Except she’s not a CPS agent she’s quite possibly the adopted kid’s actual biological mother. And she’s just like Whoops I kinda lost you at a mall at a trip a while back. Guess I’ll take you in? Grace sobs as Simon grunts because he’s glad to not have to compete with Hazel about this anymore but then still feels the need to get even with Grace as he tries to take control of an Apex that would’ve likely doomed itself due to Simon lacking any leadership skills and wanting the power of leadership while being ill-equipped to handle its tedium.
Like it’s funny how The Perennial Child is about a child dealing with a divorce that already happened on largely co-existing terms and meanwhile Cult of the Conductor is a child dealing with the most dysfunctional marriage ever as she realizes she was the catalyst for the incoming divorce and is forced to grow up fast by making a cold decision for her own survival that involves getting the fuck outta there before things inevitably blow up. Which, they do. And it’s told largely through the perspective of the shitty parents. It’s actually an incredibly funny realization in a very dark humor type of way when you think about it. Dare I compare it to a train wreck you can’t take your eyes from. And at this rate maybe the train blowing up would’ve solved a lot of problems.
