Ugh, just a question. Why are people giving so much unneeded hype to K-Pop Demon Hunters, a soullous, corrupt mess that’s designed solely for screaming K-Pop groupies? All while giving so much hate to Emilia Perez, a beautiful movie depicting transgender womanhood in Mexico? It’s kind of dumb to me.

K-Pop Demon Hunters is about three stick-thin bratty rich famous women, who have a shallow “OMG BOYS ARE SO CUTE!!!” mentality. The protagonist has an oh so overdone “Oh, I’m different! Why can’t I be like everyone else? Oh wait! It’s good to be myself!” plot. The songs are painfully generic with stupid lyrics and they inspire nothing. The love interest is a bland and boring Prince Charming dude. The Korean culture in the film is only used for aesthetics. This movie has no soul or wit whatsoever, but of course it’s about K-Pop, so it has a rabid “OMG YAS QUEEN SLAY!!!” hype, and god forbid anyone say anything negative about it.

Meanwhile, Emilia Perez weaves a dark, sad, triumphant story about a troubled indigenous Mexican woman who comes to terms with her gender dysphoria, who she really is within, dealing with her terrible past, and her complex relationship with her wife. The songs are hauntingly gorgeous and show a serious, informative depiction of the characters’ struggles, as well as real-world issues in Mexico. The way it depicts transgender issues and the way they’re treated is respectful and beautifully done, I learned a lot. I cried when Emilia and Jessi sung their romantic duet at the end of the film. It’s a powerful scene. I wish this movie got more appreciation, and not dismissed it as “racist” and “transphobic”.

The sponsor, Earl Carter, is doing this to distract from the bill he sponsored immediately before this, H.R. 1160, which appears to classify all traveling doctors and "advanced care practitioners" as independent contractors (can't be 100% sure as the text hasn't been released yet, but it sounds like it's gonna be exactly what it says on the tin).

If you've ever seen a post about doordash or lyft drivers being overworked and underpaid, this is basically the same thing but for doctors. Here's an article about why independent contractors are bad for the worker, but here's the cliff notes:

shit pay

no benefits

social isolation (coworkers changing frequently, so you don't have time to make friends or even proper acquaintances)

not actually independent workers/still tied to a company

They dressed it up by adding this reasoning to the end of the title "to help alleviate physician shortages, including in underserved areas," but it's just political theater. Any physician would still need proper licensing, and there are already systems and travelling doctor companies in place designed to address underserved areas. The only difference is that the companies would be "required" (i.e. CEOs have been chomping at the bit to do this) to make all these doctors ICs instead of salaried employees.

All this to say, when you see some outrageous shit like this, look for the stuff that's been released at the same time. That's what they're actually trying to get passed.

UNITED IN GRIEF: JENTRY CHAU VS THE UNDERWORLD

Hi! for the past 2 years I had the privilege of working on a show called Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld, as an animatic editor and assistant picture editor (and in a couple instances, as a voice actor!!). I am absolutely in love with this crew and this project. All of season 1 (13 episodes) is available to stream now on Netflix. please check it out and let Netflix if you think they should produce a season 2!!
