My name is Staci Sprout and I’m a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in helping people heal from trauma and addictions, and the author of my own healing story*. 

I’d like to share how I believe you can get the most out of your trauma therapy money, time and energy. For most people, going to therapy is a significant investment. These are tips I’ve learned from watching my therapy clients over the last decade, and paying attention to who heals more quickly. They are also strategies I’ve used myself as a client of therapy, and they’ve helped me immensely. While they may not be for everyone, in general these tips can streamline your work in therapy to make it more efficient, and effective.

1. Make a commitment to your therapy time, as an informed consumer. This means choosing your therapist wisely, being on time to your appointments, and staying the entire session, except for unusual circumstances. It also means telling the truth, no matter how difficult that might seem. If you feel ambivalent about going to therapy, or sharing something while there, talk with your therapist about this. There might be a new level of healing approaching that is causing anticipatory anxiety, or you may need a break. If you have determined but not yet accomplished your goals, you may need to change therapists to someone who is better able to help you. It’s not unusual to change therapists over time as you learn and grow.

2. Get a special journal or therapy notebook, write down your goals for therapy, and take notes during the week of your progress and other items you’d like to cover in therapy. Goals for what you want to accomplish in therapy are vital for direction and measuring progress. You can get help brainstorming what you want out of therapy and the priority order of your goals. Take note of successes, emotional triggers, compulsive patterns, and stressful life situations you’d like to discuss. Some people enter inpatient treatment for trauma/addiction recovery (30-90 days), and many of my clients attend intensive outpatient programs (1-2 weeks) for a deeper, more concentrated focus on healing than we can do in regular therapy. Others attend inspiration retreats, like mindfulness meditation, dance, or improvisational healing experiences. Talk to your therapist about options, and do your own research. What are you drawn to?

5. Find and nurture an authentic inspirational practice. I refer here to the universal need to find sources of genuine inspiration and empowerment. This may or may not include a specific religious faith, but many principles of inspirational experience are universal across cultures. 6. Build a culture of supportive friends and family outside of individual therapy. This may happen gradually, over time, but it makes a huge difference in the work in therapy if you have safe places to be before and afterwards, to continue to heal. 12-step programs, meet-up interest groups, and other support groups can be great places to meet potentially supportive friends.
