Standing at the window, coffee still warm in between her fingers as she impatiently waited for the car to get into the driveway and him stepping out. The few weeks he spent on tour weren't long enough to make her forget how he liked his coffee. Doing it as if it was second nature and he'd never been gone.
When the car pulled up, she could feel her heart almost leaping out of her chest. Watching with a bright smile as he waved the others goodbye. Backpack pulled over his shoulder, headphones still blasting music. The keys already cribbing in between his fingers as he pushed it inside the lock and turned. Announcing himself with the rustle of dirty shoes being cleaned and a loud sigh escaping him at the familiarity of the entrance hall.
Though his shoulders never lost their tension until he felt her in his hold.
Taking his headphones off, barely having time to put them on the drawer before she was already falling into him. Hands wrapped around his neck, her face pressed into the side of his skin. Leaving little kisses beneath his ear and on his jaw as they let themselves unravel in the moment.
His arms tight around her waist, picking her up and moving the two of them over to the sofa as one. His back abandoned at the door.
Falling into the cushion, he sighed into her neck. Breathing her in, reminding himself of what he could never forget but what still felt so far away until it wasn't. Neither urging the other to anything else other than existing, breathing and holding the other with their eyes shut and their hearts beating in synchronization.
Coming back home from tour was always a revelation as big as an exhaustion too. His body visibly relaxing for the first time in months, no other thought but memorizing her occupying his mind.
The hours passed like this. Even when they stood up they never stayed far from each other. His arm around her as they watched a film. Her back pressed against him as they made dinner for the night. Something simple that didn't need a lot of preparation.
It was only when they got ready for bed and he stood next to her, watching her figure through the bathroom mirror, that he remembered what was still waiting in his suitcase.
"Wait here a minute," Josh instructed her. Disappearing out into the living room where his back still laid. Digging through his messily thrown in clothes for the little package he tried protecting underneath it all.
Lingering for a second when he found it, watching the package and looking through it with his memories like an x-ray. Turning around, she was already watching him. Leaning against the doorframe, her eyes slipping down to the neatly wrapped gift but not urging him to tell her what was inside of it.
Walking over, he leaned next to her. Handing it over, fingers slightly shaking from anxiety. He watched closely as she opened it. Every little, delicate move of her fingers as she undoes the ribbon or opens the box. Her eyes widening in adoration when the light reflected against the shimmering gold.
"Found it in a vintage store in Prague and thought of, how you said you always wanted one of those. It even matches a bit with the bracelet I got you last year," he pointed out.
The heart-shaped locket dangled in between her fingers as she held it up. Opening it, inspecting the inside of the metal based jewelry.
"It's perfect," she whispered, head falling against his shoulders in exhaustion and contempt. Finally letting herself fall from grace and stop pretending like she was alright with him being away for as long as he had to be. "I'll put you in there, just so I can have you near me at all times."
