"eli!" you hiss from the doorway, the homemade cake you baked just this morning slipping through your sweaty hands.
he's fast asleep, his lips parted slightly and his elbow tucked under his head. you sigh, moving towards his side of the bed. the cake is unexpectedly heavy. "baby, wake up," you whisper with a tiny giggle, darting your bare foot out to nudge him.
his body flips to the other side of the bed and he pulls the covers up further. you burst out into laughter. "eliiiii" you whine, crawling into bed next to him, scooting closer while trying to balance the cake in your hands.
the pink gooey icing smells delicious, and you so badly need him to wake up so you can take a bite yourself. you place the lighter on the nightstand next to you along with the cake, curling up next to him.
"good morning, baby" you whisper softly in his ear, lining his body with yours as you snuggle closer to his back.
"mmmorning," he slurs, still fast asleep. you giggle, placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. "do you know what day it is?"
"monday?" he says with a yawn and pulls his hoodie over his head. you have to chuckle again. "yeah, and also...."
"dunno," he exhales and snuggles into his pillow again.
"you knowwww" you kiss his cheek again.
"ohhhh," he says while rubbing his tired eyes. "does lola have an appointment today?"
your expression drops. he was thinking about your dog going to the vet. how cute, but no. "no, lola doesn't have an appointment." you shake your head.
"it's your birthday, honey." you say with a giggle, your lips curling into a grin. his face freezes. "oh yea" he yawns again and this time sits up in bed.
"is that why it smells like strawberries?" he smiles and pulls you closer to him by your waist. you nod and bite your lip. "my homemade icing."
"well, let's see it." he pats your thigh. you lean over and balance the cake between your fingers, setting it on his lap. next comes the lighter. you flick it until it catches flame, lighting it onto a few blue and yellow candles.
after you light the candles, you sing happy birthday to him with peppered kisses all over his face, a tired smile he tries to wipe off but it's impossible to. "thank you, love." he kisses your cheek at last.
"of course. now lemme get your gift." you move off his lap, but he holds you still in his grip. "i told you no gifts this year," he shakes his head.
"i know but i had to. you're everything to me, so you deserve the world." you say soflty, your hands curling in his hair.
"alright," he whispers with a smile.
you return to your bedroom a few minutes later, a wrapped gift in your hands. "the fuck is that?" he squeals, knowing exactly what it is.
"i know you've been wanting these," you sing, moving back onto the bed.
"you didn't have to, those are expensive." he shakes his head, taking the box from you. it's a shoe box. and he's more than excited to open it.
he unwraps the blue paper, revealing a beautiful brown, leather pair of cowboy boots. "they're gorgeous." he gasps. "what am i gonna do with you?" he shakes his head.
you giggle, letting him run his fingers over the fringe. "i know you said you wanted them for when you visit texas this year on tour...so," you tilt your head and watch his smile deepen.
"i love it. thank you." he kisses you again, this time longer, making sure you know how grateful he is.
"okay, now let's try this cake." you cut him a slice, letting him make satisfied noises and chew quicker than anything else he's ever put in his mouth. "this is wonderful, baby." he says through muffled icing.
you dip your finger into the top of the cake, licking it off your finger pad. "mmmm" you sigh, not remembering the last time you baked a cake. he missed your baking.
"lemme get a picture of you, babe." you grab your phone and snap a cute picture of him, a big smile on your face behind the camera.
"uh oh," he chuckles. you smack his shoulder playfully. "im documenting these important moments."
