summary: in ask!
You would never, in a million years have expected to be standing here. When you started posting on instagram and tiktok, you didn't think it would lead to this. You were surrounded by the most beautiful girls, with beautiful outfits, in a beautiful location.
You were one of them. In a black dress, with lace detailing the arms and bottom.
You typically didn't mind lace, but with it skin tight on your arms, it felt horrific to even move. It felt like you squeezed yourself into a condom, just an extra small lace one. The DJ who played nothing but shite wasn’t helping, in fact it caused people to shout just to be heard. It felt like your brain was in a frying pan, making you more and more agitated. You wanted to run as far away as possible from everything.
"But, honestly, I just don't think it's good enough," Jade was saying as you attempted to listen back in. It was futile though, over the noise of everyone else. She was the only girl you knew here, the rest felt like they were already in their own little packs. "You okay?" She asked, concern painting her eyes.
"It's just... a lot," You said, voice quiet. She looked around in time with you.
"Yeah. Do you want me to stop talking or... is there anything I can do for you?" She asked. She was always so helpful, but you couldn't think of anything except going home that would help.
"I think I just need some fresh air," You decided after a moment of fake thought. You didn’t want to seem quick to leave and insult her, but your brain was being frayed by everything happening. She nodded, careful not to touch you in fear of overwhelming you more.
As you navigated through the event, you were only getting worse. You couldn’t even hear yourself think with how loud everything was. The lace that clung along the bottom of your dress rubbed against your thighs in the worst way. If you could, you would stop and rip it all off. Not to mention, your shoes had started causing pain in your feet. You were moving terribly awkwardly and slowly, trying to cause yourself the least amount of pain as possible.
You found some stairs to sit on outside the venue and tried center yourself, to calm down. Still, nothing worked. You wanted to be home. You immediately thought of Eli. He would immediately understand, and often, better than yourself.
The noise of the phone ringing against your ear made you cringe and only want to dive into a hole, to be left alone. But, you knew he was your only savior.
“Hello?” He asked, finally picking up.
“Can you get me?” You asked, voice wavering.
“Of course,” He said, trying to hide the nerves that immediately bubbled up inside of him. “Are you still at that place I dropped you off at?”
“Yeah,” Your response was quiet, barely louder than a whisper.
His voice had already helped slightly, but your stress levels were in the atmosphere. It didn’t make as much as a dent in the greater scheme of emotions whirling around inside you like a tornado. Throwing a wrench at it like it wasn’t capable of mass destruction.
You closed your eyes and attempted to will away all the bad emotions before the sound of a car startled you out of it.
The singer was throwing himself at you before you could even speak. He went to wrap his arm around you but stopped when he noticed your face.
He knew that look. He knew it well. There were times things were just too much for you, and this was clearly one of them.
He forced his hands back by his side, “You wanna go home?"
You nodded and stood up. As much as he wanted to wrap an arm around you, keep you safe in his hold, he knew it was better to let you initiate that when you felt like this.
Like the gentleman he was, he opened the car door for you. Once he got in the car, he didn't turn on the radio, shockingly. He knew you wanted as little input as possible, like a song. He needed to strip back the layers of what had been recorded, to the bare bones of the song. He needed to let you be you.
You focused on your breathing, the quiet of the car making it easier for you. Eli’s here, you told yourself. You didn’t have to be on edge or fearful, yet still, the hum of the road couldn’t let you do that. It felt like the reminder of a test tomorrow, a dread that loomed no matter what you did. You needed silence.
Once you stepped into the house, you made a dart for the first thing you could sit on. You ripped off your heels in record time, cursing the strap that was on them. You questioned your earlier choices. Without asking, Eli made the move to take off your dress, unzipping it for you.
You were choking on the words you wanted to say, you wanted to say too much and could only understand so little of what was even going through your brain. Thankfully, Eli’s face was telling you he understood everything you wanted to say.
He nodded. "I'm gonna, uh... Go upstairs and grab some clothes for you, is that okay?" He asked.
You just nodded back. You owed him so much after this, you thought. But, to him, it was just a regular day. He did this not to gain something, but because he loved you. And loved being around you. Any moment that was offered to be spent with you, he took.
While he grabbed the items, you made the move to free yourself from the dress. Finally. It felt so good, like you were a butterfly who finally broke out of her cocoon. But instead of spreading your wings and flying, you were curling up away from the outside world.
You stood there in your underwear, the condom-esque dress laid in a black blob in front of you. You waited. Like your salvation, Eli descended the stairs with clothes in one hand and your weighted blanket in another. You dressed yourself and the softness of them was such a relief from what had been assaulting your skin before.
"I brought you this, if you'd like," He said, gesturing toward the blanket. You just nodded, tired from all the emotions.
You laid on the couch with it over you. Eli had his arms wrapped around you. The typically chatty boy had his mouth shut. He was so grateful to have you, and for you to let him in on such a vulnerable moment. As much as he wanted to ask if you were okay, he knew you wanted silence. It left him knowing to only speak when necessary.
There was the sound of breathing, but it was muffled by Eli holding your head against his chest. He kept one hand on the ear that wasn't being muffled by his sweater, silencing everything for you. His body was turned into your own personal pair of noise cancelling headphones and you could never convey how much it meant to you.
Your eyes got heavier and heavier. Like waves crashing onto your body, you were getting knocked down by sleep. In the comfort of your boyfriend’s arms, you felt safe enough to be able to let go.
