Mad Geometry - Whitehall Palace - Inigo Jones 1619
#queenshouse designed by Britain’s first formally trained architect #InigoJones court favourite & lover of #SirFrancisBacon #Shakespeare & #KingJamesI - commissioned by Queen Anna (wife of the first openly #gay King James I ) in 1616. Anna was known as the dancing Queen & like all the Stuart Queen she was very hands-on when it came to staging #plays #masques #ballets & #Operas - visiting dignitaries were bemused & delighted by Anna & James playing the leading roles in Performances. Anna loved to dance & descriptions of her leaping & spinning across the stage, tossing her husband the king & princes in the air astonished visiting royals - it was a long way from the rigid formality & brutality of the court of Queen ElizabethI & her obsession with bear baiting as entertainment- for despite revisionist #historians Elizabeth had no taste for theatre or ballet & it wasn’t until 1603 that Sir Francis Bacon, Shakespeare & subversive women & #lgbtqsupport such as #MaryWroth Could finally publish their work. Unfortunately Anna never got to dance in the Queens house as funds ran low. The arrival of 15 year old heiress Queen Henry - wife of CharlesI & Daughter of French Queen Marie de Medici - Mother of the Baroque ⚜️ Queen Henry arrived with plenty of funds to complete the work and the rest are new #artists composers singers - #VanDyck #artemisiagentileschi etc - Like Anna, Queen Henry didn’t mind getting her hands dirty, painting backdrops & stagesets & sewing costumes. Inigo Jones
The first British architect to venture into the uses of the Vitruvian order, Inigo jones is attributed heavily with much of the revival of classical architectures features on the ground unlike Palladios distant inspiration from across the channel. Whilst evidently taking inspiration directly from the Italian, Inigo jones gave a British face to what was a European style for all intents and purposes, even if its origins were more than 2000 years ago in a vastly unrecognisable society to what Europe is in the modern era. Steven Parissien as so often visited on this subject has suggested the compatibility advantage jones had in gaining the attribution of launching architectural styles across Britain. Unlike Palladio he was English, the advantage was similar to that as to a roman citizen turn architect would be more revered by his peers than say a “barbarian” one. (Parissien.S,1994, p.78) Inigo, in and of himself was an example of the symbolic value instilled by the British ruling class in every aspect to ensure they radiated the right signals to the world. he represented in his works the ‘grandiose political aspirations “ of England at the time and is the start of where we begin to see the British connecting themselves to the values of the ancients and displaying their intentions as well as ideology through the medium of architecture.
