On This Day In History . 22 June 1606 . Remembering Guy Fawkes Day...through History of England-English Rulers-King James I

(See, we got there eventually folks!)

King James I (1566-1625), ruled as King of Scotland (as James VI) from 1567 to 1625 and first Stuart king of England from 1603 to 1625.

He was famously not killed by Guy Fawkes in 1605 when Fawkes and a group of like-minded individuals attempted to blow up the English Parliament with gunpowder in protest of the treatment of Catholics in England.

Despite the complete failure of the Gunpowder Plot, Fawkes became a symbol of freedom, which prompted the Guy Fawkes Night in Britain. In remembrance of the historical figure, people gather to watch fireworks displays, drink and burn effigies in his honor.

 He also was the inspiration to the poem The Fifth of November, which was made popular in America by its use in the film V for Vendetta. This movie featured another modern item inspired by this historical figure--the Guy Fawkes mask. 

Our book for this week Miniature History of England was published in 1910 by the Goode Brothers, and lists the rulers of England from William I to Edward VII.

On This Day In Royal History . 7 May 1625 . The Funeral of King James VI & I . . ◼ James’s funeral, a magnificent but disorderly affair, took place on 7 May. Bishop John Williams of Lincoln preached the sermon, observing, “King Solomon died in Peace, when he had lived about sixty years … and so you know did King James”. . ◼ James was buried in Westminster Abbey. The position of the tomb was lost for many years. In the 19th century, following an excavation of many of the vaults beneath the floor, the lead coffin was found in the Henry VII vault. . ◼ The king had died at Theobalds House on 27 March 1625 during a violent attack of dysentery. In early 1625, James had been plagued by severe attacks of arthritis, gout & fainting fits, & in March had fell seriously ill with tertian ague & then suffered a stroke. . 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Born 19 June 1566, he was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 & King of England & Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death in 1625. On This Day In History . 24 July 1567 . James Stuart becomes King of Scotland as his mother Mary, Queen of Scots is forced to abdicate. . . ◼ James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, & a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England, & Lord of Ireland (through both his parents), uniquely positioning him to eventually accede to all three thrones. . ◼ James succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother Mary was compelled to abdicate in his favour. . ◼ Four different regents governed during his minority, which ended officially in 1578, though he did not gain full control of his government until 1583. . ◼  In 1603, he succeeded the last Tudor monarch of England, Elizabeth I, who died without issue. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era after him, until his death in 1625 at the age of 58. The British World: The Stuarts 1603-1714. “James I” Money and Patronage, Failure and Favoritism. Sir Anthony Weldon, a courtier to #jamesi (1566-1625), had it about right: James, he declared in an unguarded moment, was the “wisest fool in Christendom.” Weldon’s assessment deftly summarized the character of a king who at first ruled effectively, but whose misjudgments and lofty view of kingship helped sow the seeds of civil war less than 20 years after his death. 1) King’s Gift. The Queen’s House, Greenwich, commissioned from architect Inigo Jones by #queenanne , wife of James I, in 1616. England’s first wholly classical-style building, the palace was inspired by Jones’s recent visit to Italy. On This Day In Royal History . 23 November 1589 . King James VI & I married Anne of Denmark . ◾ A suitable marriage, was necessary to reinforce his monarchy, & the choice fell on the fourteen-year-old Anne of Denmark, younger daughter of the Protestant Frederick II. . ◾ Shortly after a proxy marriage in Copenhagen in August 1589, Anne sailed for Scotland but was forced by storms to the coast of Norway. . ◾ On hearing the crossing had been abandoned, James, in what Willson calls “the one romantic episode of his life”, sailed from Leith with a three-hundred-strong retinue to fetch Anne personally. . ◾ The couple were married formally at the Bishop’s Palace in Oslo on 23 November &, after stays at Elsinore & Copenhagen & a meeting with Tycho Brahe, returned to Scotland on 1 May 1590. . ◾ By all accounts, James was at first infatuated with Anne, & in the early years of their marriage seems always to have showed her patience & affection. . ◾ The royal couple produced three children who survived to adulthood: Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, who died of typhoid fever in 1612, aged 18; Elizabeth, later queen of Bohemia; & Charles, his successor. Celebrity & Eccentricity first emerged in their contemporary sense after the death of ElizabethI in 1603 when our first openly gay monarch #KingJamesI & his Queer Royal Court removed a host of laws & class & gender barriers, designed to keep people in “place” & appease hardline #puritans confining women & #lgbtqia talent in the shadows⚜️James wanted to unite the Kingdoms of Britain through culture & new ideas. By loosening #censorshiplaws he made #theatre #satire & #opera available to all. But his most radical act was the abolition of ancient #sumptuarylaws which for centuries had controlled what people could wear based on #class & gender! By 1604 London was awash with Flamboyant fashions & crossdressing & #transman Mall Frith (b.Mary 1584) was acting on stage in a play based on his extraordinary trans journey. The Modern Age culture sports & science was spearheaded by Women & Queer Torchbearers - LGBTQ+ celebrities like #Shakespeare Sir Francis Bacon, Mall Frith, Mary Wroth, Elizabeth Cary, Margaret Cavendish & Aphra Behn - ALL of them Queer & all of them subsequently ghosted or heteronormalised by Victorian #whitespremist Historians like Thomas Carlyle. After St Paul’s burned down in 1666 Frith’s his tomb was moved to #stbrideschurch Church #FleetStreet & since 1845 it has been shamefully neglected & is now overgrown.
