St. Albans Psalter. The last page of the Emmaus cycle and its verso. Its verso shows David as the author of the Psalms seated in the capital B of ‘Beatus vir’. A goose-like dove of the Holy Spirit leans over the psalmist's head to inspire him as he composes the psalms. Without any precedent is the vignette above the psalmist on the page: two knights on horseback fight each other. The whole of this Beatus page is framed with a lengthy explanatory gloss that starts on the previous page. It tells us that the image is a metaphor of the bellum spirituale. The frequently bloodthirsty language of these biblical poems is vividly rendered in many scenes of struggle between angels and the forces of evil.. (Powell, M., 2006; Openshaw, K. M., 1993)
