patrick was genuinely insane for ink lemonade squidward should have taken legal action or smthing
Sooo many people talk about how Ink Lemonade is disturbing because of the plot, but honestly I found the episode really easy to watch and not only beautifully drawn and animated and great for study, but pretty funny and interesting with all the ways Patrick scares Squidward. (I can watch it while eating!) I kind of wish it did more than that one bit, but it’s honestly sort of harmless.
This stuff (KELLY ARMSTRONG BOARDED THIS EPISODE) is effing gorgeous, like, I wish more shows looked this beautiful.
Fans say Patrick is “out-of-character” in it but honestly Patrick screwing over Squidward and SpongeBob for his own gain without realizing it is a staple of him at this point.
I’ve gotten much more disturbing vibes from “Shanghaied” (I never want to see the Fly of Despair again) and “Procrastination” (SpongeBob’s ridiculous nightmare near the end and the paranoia of everyone knowing he had an essay to write--whyyyyy...?) Ink Lemonade just felt to me like more Season 11 wackiness and honestly isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
Thinking about it... it occurs to me that I have a positive relationship and view of Plankton Paranoia as compared to One Coarse Meal and Ink Lemonade, because Plankton Paranoia has a missing ingredient that OCM and IL don’t. While yes, all three episodes deal with mental illness and especially paranoia, Plankton Paranoia is treated as lighthearted. Plankton isn’t actually there plotting against Krabs the whole episode, or even worse going out of his way to knowingly aggravate Krabs’s paranoia (unlike in the cases of OCM and IL). Furthermore, there’s some lightheartedness at the end that resolves Krabs’s worries; unlike w OCM and IL where the resolution of the episode doesn’t at all address how Plankton and Squidward (respectively) were realistically traumatized / damaged at the end.
Worst Scenario
Well, he finally did it. SpongeBob finally drank Squidward's ink.
For those of you who don't like Ink Lemonade because drinking Squidward's ink is gross, allow me to introduce you to this sandwich
This is called the Kuro burger. It's a popular black sandwich sold at a fast food franchise in Japan. The bun and cheese is dyed black with a natural and edible additive called bamboo charcoal. And the sauce is also edible even with it's natural additive, squid ink.
That's right, there's a sauce out there called spicy squid ink sauce. It's exactly what you think it is, and people in Japan love it.
So this may make you see Ink Lemonade be a little less gross, or you could be more grossed out by it. But, I thought this fact needed addressing, as maybe this is what inspired Ink Lemonade. And, maybe that's why the patrons liked it before they knew what it was, it was such a bold and spicy flavor.
Tell me what you think of this reveal, if you think the writers knew of squid ink sauce before ink lemonade, and if you would actually try it. Me personally, I would try it if it wasn't too spicy. No the squid ink actually doesn't turn me off, but with my gastritis I can't have anything too spicy. Maybe one day they'll make a mild squid ink sauce and I'll give it a taste, as well as ship a bottle to Gavin Lee as I'm kind of mischievous like that.
Who wants to hear a really bizarre Squidward theory I made up, but rejected after watching the Broadway musical?
So, starting in season eight, the show periodically used Squidward inking jokes. And, fun fact, they always wanted to. Stephen Hillenberg said in earlier seasons they would try, but it would look like Squidward pooped his pants. This is probably why it took wm this long to figure it out, and why Squidward inks from more places than his backside.
But as fun as that fact is, I was thinking one day what the in show reason is for Squidward to ink that late in the series, and keep inking. That's when I came up with the idea that when toddlers or little kids octopuses would be trained to control their inking. Consider it toilet training, but for octopuses. Unfortunately, Squidward was a little kid who needed a little longer time to control it. This led to some embarrassing moments in preschool and even a few in elementary school where he would be spooked so bad he would ink in front of everyone and get embarrassed about it. So, he did contr it eventually, but after being grown into a giant in the episode Giant Squidward, where the first inking incident occurred, the problem kinda came back. Now sometimes when Squidward gets really scared he would ink. And when he gets embarrassed about it, that's him remembering the childhood trauma.
However, one day I watched a clip from the SpongeBob Broadway show and decided to reject the he theory. The reason was because Squidward in the musical explains in short story that he hates being called a loser due to a third grade talent show, where apparently he didn't do so hot as kids jeered at him, calling him a loser. With the moment being so traumatic as it is, coupling that with the inking theory would have made the moment much mortifying for him.
So yeah, while I like the in world theory of Squidward's inking issues, I'm not that evil to give him that as well as childhood bullying issues. If you guys like the idea, even together, that's fine. That's why I finally decided to share it... Well, that and the infamous Ink Lemonade episode.
Cool I found the rough animatic of Ink Lemonade- SWEET MERCIFUL CRAP IT'S WORSE!!
