CRINGETOBER DAY 2 LET'S FUCKING GOOOO
alts under the cut ♧
oc x canon likers rise UP
Straight up have the most cracked set up for art right now, so ready for everything to get moved so I can get properly set up and can crank art out instead of needing to stop every 30 minutes cause my bones are dying and my limbs are bending in strange ways
Guess who's back with more lore! Me! And today you are talking about
Hair in Splatoon!
So Inkfish hair is made of mainly ink. It's top Layer is a transparent film to keep all ink inside and dirt and debris out.
The film is squishy and can stretch and shrink. Under the film is the colour spots that control the colour seen. Then is the ink tissue the hair is made up mostly of tissue made of ink, there's little to none nerves in the hair and depending on the species some have muscle in them. The under side of the hair has thicker film and no colour spots.
Inkfish hair types
Octolings are special as in their hair they have small parts of the brain in the tips, they have more feeling than other species and better control over them. The brains in the hair focus on tasting the air and collecting information for the main brain. If a limb is damaged the nerves near the damage turn off so the Octoling doesn't fell the pain of it separating. Once the tentacle is separated if not sealed, boiled or sterilized the limb will become an Octarian.
Some Inkfish with larger hair parts may have their ink sac in the head instead of the chest. This is a natural defense mechanism as the ink sac is a vital organ and if punctured it can be fatal.
Because of this any Inkfish that have this feature have to be screened for it so they never cut their hair too close.
For colours Inkfish can technically be a different colour to what Ink they spit out, see the ink in the hair is dyed by the colour spots and not the sac. so the Inkfish can spit their natural ink colour but show a different one as the ink spat didn't go to the colour spots to change colour.
Styling hair
To care for the hair special combs are used. these combs can poke into the film but not break it, this is so they can straighten out any ink build up. this is mainly to keep the hair hair the right shape but doing this stops lumpy tentacles and lowers the risk of a broken ink vein.
Cutting
To cut a limb hot knives are used as they make clean cuts and aren't as painful. Other tools make jagged cuts and cause more pain. The pain is not too bad for most Inkfish but for Octolings and those with more nerves numbing gel or a busy fish is used to distract the limb.
Cuts are collected and depending on the customer they are given to them, sold to be eaten or used to make ink ivs and artificial ink. If the Octoling is under 20 the limbs are automatically sterilized then sent to the customers choosing, If the Octoling is older then they can choose to keep the limb to get an Octarian. If they don't want it then it's sterilized and sent to one of the previous options.
Most people will leave their hair the way it was cut but others shape it.
Shaping
Shaping is when you use different combs to pull and stretch the film to make the ends look natural again, this pushes the tissue around to make it reshape. This is also done to get bangs and offshoots not apart of a limb.
Sealing
Sealing is when a searing hot blade is used to cut and then the cut area is flash frozen, this kills the regeneration cells in the limb and stops it from growing back, it's used to keep one style forever. Once done a limb can't be unsealed.
Grilling
Grilling is hot blades in a certain shape (mainly a grill) are pushed onto the inkfish's head to make an imprint. Grilling acts like a temporary seal as the cells takes longer to regenerate. Grilling is used to get undercuts qnd funky patterns. inkfish with ink sacs in their heads can never get this done.
Frying
Frying is the style of putting a limb in boiling oil to dry the limb out or dunking it in and putting fake bread crumbs on it. Some will dunk, bread then dunk again to fry the breading into a charred mess.
Frying takes a long time to fix as the tentacles need to regenerate their ink veins and colour cells. As the tentacle fixes those the breading flakes off.
Piercings
To pierce a pointed piercing is always used to start. The pointed piercing is shot in and NOT to be removed or touched. The limb needs to regenerate around it so the film makes a hollow hole for the piercing. The spike keeps the film from forming over the piercing.
Once fully regenerated the piercing can be removed and any piercing desired can be put in.
Fish fins
So with fins I see them growing as well and still needing to be cut. Unlike Inkfish fins can't be sealed at any length. To seal a fin you must remove the fin follicle so it can't grow back. Some fish with larger back fins will get it removed for convenience. Some get them removed for beauty reasons
For example my Oc Angel had two fins on her chest but she got them removed at 13 as she didn't like them and hated stuffing them in her dress and they got in the way. To remove them the fin follicles were taken out but not scales were harmed so she has no scar of it.
So yeah hair stuff
Also side note, ask me questions! I love rambling!
hows that big run going guys

Big Man, but real!
soo it's Splatoon's 10th anniversary and...
I finally got around to drawing my boys, Taki and Yako of my fanmade idol duo Saffalopunk. Get it? Like Cephalopod and punk but spelled weird? Yeah. Here they are:
Not my best art-wise, but I still love my boys. Also Yako is transmasc, preferring he/they pronouns as said above. These two are not only a musical duo, but also handle news broadcasts throughout the Octarian domes.
Taki is easily the louder and more outgoing of the two, especially when compared to the quieter, more reserved Yako. ...also they're a couple. Yay!
