Summary: A severly injured Dream lays near Kinoko Kingdom where a recently woken up George finds him. (883 words)
cw: blood, c!George negative
~~~
A living corpse walked around Kinoko Kingdom in the late night. A blue sleeping mask was laying on top of his forehead where George had shoved it up after waking up. He didn't plan to stay up for long. No reason to take it off just to put it back on a short while later. A blanket was wrapped around his shoulders, keeping him a bit more warm than his thin pyjamas could. Bare feet carried him around the quiet and mostly empty town.
It was rare for George to me awake nowadays. Sleep and the included dreams were much too enticing to stay away from. Any movement in the real world too energy draining and tedious to even stand up most of the time.
The real world was lonely. The dream world had all his friends there. Had his Dream.
Here his Dream was gone. Locked away in a prison he couldn't enter no matter how many times he found himself in front of it. But even before that he was gone, wasn't he? Too stubborn and idiotic than to stay by his side.
George's feet left the stone bricked path and continued onto the grass of the forest surrounding the little kingdom.
After only a few blocks of wandering he found the first interesting thing he was in a while: a bloodied figure with a stained smiling mask leaning against a tree, a shimmering netherite axe nearby.
For a second he wondered if he truly was awake. He considered pinching himself but knew that would hardly bring anything, so instead he came closer to who looked like Dream.
Actual Dream, not the Dream from his Dreams.
Dream-Dream was never this stained with blood and had clothes and armor as damaged as real-Dream. So unless his dreams decided to switch things up a bit more, this was the real Dream and George wasn't dreaming.
Though the white hair is new and real-Dream was never this thin. Briefly he considered that someone thought it would be funny to dress up as Dream and dump fake blood on themselves. George quickly discarded that train of thought. Sapnap did mention once how Dream seeemed to have gotten thinner in prison and that he spotted a white streak of hair in Tommy once and in Wilbur - who was apparently back.
His face dipped further down, enough to show the scar across his nose and that was all the confirmation George needed. This is Dream.
Seemed he did end up escaping the inescapable. George wasn't too surprised about that if he had to be completely honest.
And he ended up coming back to him even. Even if it's in a less than ideal condition.
"Dream," George spoke.
No reaction. He tried again. Still nothing.
With a roll of his eyes, George walked closer to the body. The closer he got, the more he noticed how Dream's lips seemed to be moving slightly, though he couldn't make out what the idiot was saying.
He stepped closer, kneeling down once he was right next to Dream, uncaring of his blanket getting in the bloody puddle that seemed to collect on the floor. Only now could he faintly hear what Dream was saying or rather whispering.
"Punz... help... please. Punz."
George frowned before his frown turned into a grimace. Punz. Why Punz?!
He had half a mind to stand up and just turn around but he stuck around. There's no other name uttered among his pleas for help except for a single 'Techno', 'Sapnap' and 'Sam' with so many 'Punzs'. George's knuckles turned white from how tightly he had his right hand in a fist. While steaming in his thoughts, he didn't notice the shadow moving just outside of his sight. Didn't notice the golden medal with an eye of ender snuggly sitting in the middle of it.
He didn't hear the person coming down and to Dream's side as George stormed off to sleep again. He passed by Sapnap as he entered the empty kingdom again. His friend tried to talk to him. None of the words reached him. He just wanted to sleep and get back to his dreams and his Dream.
---
Punz kneeled down next to Dream the second George disappeared into the trees. Their sword got discarded into their inventory now that they didn't need to knock the ex-King out anymore.
With how much blood Dream seemed to be losing, they didn't want to wait any longer than necessary. They checked Dream's body for the worst of his injuries, the ones that needed attention now before they moved to a safer place. There was one big wound on the left side of his upper body.
Punz took out a healing potion, one they specifically made to work on Dream's body which barely reacted to regularly brewed healing pots anymore. Bits of the pink and purple shimmering liquid were dropped onto a clean cloth which they soon pressed onto the wound before wrapping it bandages to keep it there. They did the same for a few more wounds before taking out an invisibility potion and giving half to Dream, making sure he was actually swallowing it before drinking the rest themself.
With ease, they lifted Dream up, careful of his wounds, and started heading towards their tower.
Summary: After Doomsday was finished, Dream suddenly transforms into an owl. A situation he slowly learns to tolerate. (4,8 k words)
Very much a crack treated seriously kinda fic.
It's been done. Finally the country that has plagued his server for so long is gone to bedrock. Now no one should try to rebuilt what was never meant to be. His inventory was empty of all TNT. It all went into the machines that made it rain down. The only bits left are spread throughout his bases and some in his ender chest.
The plan went well. Next step would be the confrontation and his imprisonment. And then- argh.
He stumbled on the snow as pain went through his skull. His hand reached upwards to feel around. Nothing externally. No attack. Just a sudden decision by his brain to fumble.
"Dream? You good?", Techno asked, eyebrows knitted slightly. He stayed still where he was with Philza having stopped just a bit beside him.
"Yes. Just- it's nothing." Dream continued walking. His two allies waited a bit before going too.
Dream managed to get a few more steps in before another shrieking pain landed him on the ground. He could just hear Techno start to speak again before every sound got overshadowed by a screech, his eyes forced shut in an attempt to make it more bearable as pain spread over his body.
He could barely make sense of what was happening. His body didn't let him focus on anything except the pain. Pain like his body was contorting.
He tried to stay awake. Tried to stay aware, but in the end the pain got too much as everything felt like it grew into him.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
When Dream opened his eyes next, a dull pain was still there. There but bearable. He looked around, moving his head to see his surroundings better.
Familiar was one of the first thoughts that came to mind. Dream thought he saw this place before. A ceiling made of spruce wood, an emerald block with a bell hanging from it and a grindstone. It was Techno's cabin. Based on the softness beneath him, he was most likely laying on his bed. Why he was laying there was the next question on his mind. Why everything seemed so much bigger than before was the next.
When attempting to stand up, he quickly realised what was wrong.
This wasn't his body.
This was not his body.
He was smaller, way less than half of his previous body height. Talons gripped into the sheets as he stood up. He spread what he thought were his arms as he tried to keep his balance while taking a look at himself.
Feathered snow white chest. Wings covered in similar white colours on the front and more brown, grey and golden feathers on the back. Sticky legs leading to four sharp talons each.
He didn't recognise what he was. A bird, yes. That much was obvious by the feathers and wings and talons. But it didn't look like any chicken he ever saw. Nor any parrot or crow. Now he knows there are more birds than that. He knows his server doesn't have the most diverse wildlife. It's not a big one, and the diversity in nature reflects that. So this must be some kind of bird that exists on other servers which just confuses him even more.
How did this even happen? Did he accidentally drink some form-changing potion? Did someone get something on him during doomsday? Did-
Noise from below caught his attention. He could hear two voices. Talking.
"You sure he's up yet?" Phil.
"Can't hurt to check. Better to be there when he does considering his new look." Techno.
"Yeah probably. Guy's gonna be freaked." Phil conceded.
He heard something grab onto a wooden object. "Still got no clue what the cause could be?"
"None, mate. There were no potion particles or other traces. No one was near. He's not a shapeshifter as far as we know and I don't think even then that shifting would have caused enough pain or energy usage to pass out like that. The only thing left i could think of is an upset or playful god but no gods are this active in mortal's lives. Especially on this server. It's too cut off."
Good to know he wasn't the only clueless one on how this issue happened. Though that doesn't help with his next task. Turning back to his normal self. There's already some solutions forming in his head. Potions, revival, other rituals. Though revival has shown to only really restore the part that led to the death. But it could be worth a try. Though that means getting to Punz. Which means getting out and past Techno.
Dream flapped his wings a bit only to make no progress with flying. That would make things harder. Could he make it to Punz with this small of a body without flying?
He'd have to try if he truly couldn't figure it out. Heck maybe Punz could teach him flying till they figured out a way to turn him back. Sure, they have bee wings that don't function quite like feathered ones but they might still have some good advice for him.
He waddled to the edge of the bed where he hopped down onto the floor and towards the ladder.
Just as he wanted to peak down a familiar face peered up from below. He stared into the blue eyes of his rival.
"Hallo. Good to see you up. Was getting concerned for a bit there." Dream tried to speak though all that left his mouth was a screech. "Yeaaaah. Not the best condition to wake up in. But i have to say, it's an improvement from your previous wardrobe. No demonic looking armour or blinding green hoodies but instead a nice beige colour with forest green eyes. Which actually. I don't think those are normal for the kind of owl you are. Or maybe they are. Dunno much about owls to be frank."
An owl? So that's what this form was. Curious.
Dream tried again to talk only for another screech to exit.
"Come on, let's get down." Techno reached out with one of his upper hooves. Dream debated following as he looked at the hoof, then at Techno's face again and once more down, his face constantly moving as his eyes refused any rotation.
Techno- He should be safe. The guy has so many animals around his place and heck, just a few hours ago they destroyed a country together.
His decision made, he carefully stepped onto the outstretched fingers. "Just gonna put you onto my shoulder. Easier to move." Once held close enough, Dream stepped over onto what he just now noticed was a pad on his shoulder. Dream gripped a bit tighter onto it and noticed no sign of pain from Techno. Probably a leftover item from when Phil could still fly. It wasn't too strange to imagine the old elytrian landing on Techno's shoulder. (Faintly, he wondered if his wings would be returned to their old glory once the plan was complete.)
Techno's stepped down the ladder with owl on his shoulder. Philza was standing at the bottom, looking up at them and nodding when he saw Dream. "Morning, mate. How are you?"
Dream screeched again with Techno only faltering for a second before continuing down until both his hooves hit the ground.
"Yeah, figured out as much. Owls don't typically have the same vocal cords and inner workings to be able to produce craftian words."
Dream stayed silent. It's no use if they can't understand him after all. He just needs to get to Punz, get them to kill him, (convince them it is him), and then get revived. Easy.
He jumped onto the ground, spreading his wings to soften the landing, and continued hoping further along to the door at which he realised his next issue. He couldn't open it.
"I don't think it's the safest for you out there," commented Philza.
"Yeah. Not that anyone will realise who you are but I don't know how friendly most of them will react to an unfamiliar animal that's not native to this server. Might even think you're some kind of new monster mob." Dream was not persuaded to stay and looked around for another exit. The door was clearly no option. The windows neither. Someone would have to open them for him.
…Maybe he could trick Steve into it. Or one of the foxes he could hear downstairs.
"Dream. Come on, man. We can figure out together how to turn you back. Philza's lived for so long surely he has some kind of clue to get us started. And three pair of hooves slash hands slash talons are better than one."
Unfortunately, Techno did have a point. It would be no use if he died before ever reaching Punz. He can try later, once he got more used to this body and how to handle it. Till then he had to hope either of the two here could get them on the right track already.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
The progress they had made was little. It's been two weeks and barely anything. He was still stuck as an owl. Though he had to admit, it had a few benefits. For one, with some help from Philza, he did learn how to fly. It's not that smooth yet and definitely needs improvement but it is some progress. He understands why Philza misses flying.
It feels…wonderful. He flapped his wings and rose above the woods. Wind both breathed against his face and held him up with how it flowed beneath and above his feathered body. It's fascinating to not be stuck on the ground. Similar to whenever he'd jump from branch to branch except even more free.
In the distance, he spotted something scittering across the floor. An animal. He flies lower and near silent in the direction of the moving prey. Lower and lower. His talons spread out, aiming for the potential catch until they grasped the animal firmly. He killed it and moved to hold it in his beak before flying on and keeping an eye out for any pink or red he could spot.
It took a bit but eventually he found Techno and by extension Philza. They were chatting with four of Techno's wolves walking beside them.
He changed his course a bit, flying in an arch around them till he was behind them. Silent as ever, he approached the smaller of the two and grabbed the hat which he then dropped on the head of one of the wolves. The surprised yelp Philza let out was worth it. Even more so with Techno's laugh.
"Goddamn mate. You really like sneaking up on others," Philza chastised with a smile on his face.
"Yeah, come on. You can't scare an old man like that. Who knows how much his heart can even take." Techno joked.
"Ey! I'm not that old."
"Sure. Sure. Whatever helps calm your mind. By the way, nice catch, Dream. You're getting better." Techno was pretty sure Dream was smiling.
He was. They had started with unmoving prey. Some dead baby chickens Techno had prepared till Dream could hunt himself. It had been used to test his grip and aim ability. Philza had held the food up for Dream to snatch. It helped greatly with improving his movement.
This one wasn't the first real living catch he got. There have been mice he heard beneath the snow carpet in their clearing. Though the existence of mice on this server was still rather strange to him. The smaller birds that had started appearing too. So far it's a good change but till he knows what caused it, he will likely still be put off to some degree. (He wonders if Punz noticed.)
He turned his face up as he started to swallow his prey whole. That too was something he had to get used to. How owls eat their prey usually as a whole and throw the inedible bits up later on in pellets.
On the way back to the clearing he switched back to sitting on Techno's shoulder. With the padding, he was less worried about accidently hurting him, compared to the bare fur on the wolf.
The chatting of the two friends he tuned out as he focuses more on their surroundings. The rustling of leaves. The distant hops of a bunny. The yips of many different wolves as they got closer to the cabins. His hearing was better like this. He could pinpoint the location better. An amazing help for hunting and for hearing nervous teenagers.
Ranboo was trying to be silent and he was doing decent at it. Neither Techno nor Philza seemed to have noticed them so far. Dream turned to them briefly, catching their gaze before both of them averted their eyes.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
The cold was biting at their skin despite the many layers of clothing that should be keeping them warm. Admittably, they have been standing outside for a good few minutes right now. Their left hand was rising to knock before sinking again for the seventh time as they debate bothering Techno over what is pretty much a non-issue, just a curiousity… A curiousity that has caused some delays in sleeping after looking out of the house and spotting two green owlish eyes staring at his house as well as other nearby locations.
He raised his hand again to knock and before he can even think to do anything, the door opened and his semi-official mentor stood before him with the strange owl on his shoulder. "Ranboo. Hello. How's my favourite main character doing?"
"Hi, Techno. Uhm. I'm fine."
"Good good. Anything you came over for?"
"Yeah. Uhm. Just a question. That you obviously don't have to answer if you don't want to but uhm. I just- Since when do you have an owl?" Ranboo stuttered out, aware that the owl wasn't looking at them. Despite being the one currently making noises, the owl seemed in check the source of the sound.
"Since I decided owls are actually very cool creatures. Did you know they can turn their heads nearly 270°?"
"No?" Ranboo tilted their heads, watching as the owl seemingly did just that. It looked…creepy. It was already disturbing enough to see it turn its head to look directly behind it. That its range is even further than that was not exactly comforting.
"Yeah, it's really cool. Good for keeping a watch for threats especially at night. Ain't ya." Techno lifted his shoulder with the owl slightly up. The owl stared at him for a bit before avertings its gaze again.
"Aren't owls wild?"
"Yeah. This one's as wild as Steve. And probably nearly as dangerous for strangers." That was… not really comforting to hear. Ranboo looked at the talons and could already imagine how much it would hurt to have them truly dig into your skin.
"Ah. Good. Good." They found themselves saying before some excuse tumbled out of their mouth and they stumbled back to their house.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
Punz was worried for lack of a better term. It's been over three weeks. End of January was here and still no further word from Dream. The display room was finished and done for the confrontation they had planned. The prison was finished and ready for Dream so where was the guy?
They could understand if he had changed his mind. If instead of imprisoning himself for a bit, he wanted to take another direction. (Punz hoped so. Sure, he trusted Dream and his plans but something didn't fully sit right with him. But now he wonders if it had to do with Dream's sudden silence instead of something else.)
Their fingers drummed on the table as their mind continued wandering. Ideas of where he might be. Punz last saw him during Doomsday, where he stood above the doomed nation, walking on blackish purple stone while TNT was raining down. Dream had looked gorgeous, mesmerising.
Restless, they stood up. Punz might not know where their friend went after that day in early January, but they had a few places they could check out. Just in case.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
"Phiiiil! Have you seen mister screech-a-lot?"
"One of my crows says they saw him fly into the hound's lil house early today. Apparently with some dead animal between his claws."
Wouldn't be surprising. Dream had taken to going on solo hunts. A lot of their hunting trips involved Dream flying rather far from them to make more use of his near silent flight, so it makes sense he'd go out alone at some point.
The cold hit him right in the face as he stepped outside his cabin and made the way to the little house he had built for his dogs. It was good at giving them some protecting from the elements. Even if a good chunk of them loved running around in the snow.
Speaking of, a couple of them were playing around outside. Chasing and tackling each other with no real harm being done. It was noticeable though that not all of them were out and about. A quarter of them were lazying about inside the hut.
They'd huddled into groups, some piles composing of five or more laying on top of one another. One such pile included an owl with a bloodied beak on one of the canine's backs. Like Phil had said, a bloody bunnyleg was laying nearby. The rest was presumably already consumed. The size did surprise Techno. Bigger than Dream's usual catches. He was improving well.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
A knock on his door made Techno groan. He could already see Dream on his shoulder ready to screech in an attempt to scare off the visitors but Techno quickly sent him a glare and his beak silently closed.
As annoying as visitors are, he can't just scare them all off. He tried.
He moved Dream to his pocket to prevent any attempts at scaring. Upon opening the door, he reconsidered his choice though.
"Techno, you wrongun. Did you see your dear and beloved friend Dream anywhere?" Tommy asked, right out of the gate. "I swear to prime if you are hiding him, I will-"
"Good morning, Techno. Lovely weather we have, Techno. How are you, Techno? You know, I'm starting to think good manners are lacking in so many here." Techno pointedly still held dream's beak shut and tried his best to keep him from moving.
"Stop trying to stall. Where is he?"
"No clue, Tommy." Techno sneaked a treat into his pocket in hopes to bribe Dream into staying quiet. "Maybe go to one of his non-existant houses? Or maybe to Sapnap or George?"
"Don't you dare-" Techno closed the door before Tommy could get in another word. He let Dream out of his pocket, who immediately flew onto his little tree in the corner and glared at Techno. "And this is how you deal with them in the best way. Answer as honestly as you can and then block any further attempts."
Dream didn't look impressed in the slightest.
"Oh come on. I'm gonna make some tea and get you some water. Maybe that will calm you. Do you even make sure to hydrate normally? Or is it like sleep, in that you don't need to sleep?"
A screech came from behind him and he chuckled.
Water flowed seamlessly into the pot that he then heated up until it was cooking.
When he returned, he saw a scary lack of teletubby-turned-owl. "...fuuuuudge."
"AAAAAAAAH!" In a rush Techno opened the door again to find both Tommy and Tubbo near Ranboo's house. Blood was dripping down on them and- oh blood god thats a dead rodent. It didn't take him long to figure out what was the cause when he heard a screech from above.
Thankfully, it did cause the two visitors to run away. Frankly with an owl diving down onto them and pulling at their hairs but he will take it. Even if he will have to speak with Dream on less traumatising ways to send people away.
And traumatising Ranboos...again.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
It had to be him. It had to be as crazy as it sounded. But crazy was right up Dream's ally, Punz thought.
No one has seen or heard from Dream at all ever since Doomsday over a month ago.
Not Sam, who stared at the finished prison built with his payment received before Dream seemed to have gone missing.
Not Sapnap, who acted uncaring and angry but Punz could see the worry in his face when Punz brought up the guy's apparent disappearance.
Not George, who awoke shortly from his nap before falling right back asleep.
Not Bad or Ponk who switched the topic to the egg and its interest in Punz.
Not Purpled who has been keeping an eye out after Punz asked him to.
Not Tommy nor Tubbo who seemed uneasy about the silence. Accusing an owl in the arctic of being sent by Dream probably.
Not Techno or Philza who were last seen with Dream. But- it sounded more and more crazy the more Punz thought it over in their head.
They've never heard of anything like a transformtation potion or spell. There was nothing in the book Dream shared with them that offered a ritual like that. None of their research so far showed any way someone could transform another person into an animal. But that owl had to be Dream.
It seemed to have appeared some time after Dream disappeared. It had green eyes and Punz poured over so many books involving owls. None of them had green eyes. Black, brown, orange and yellow eyes, yes. But not green.
Dream trusted Technoblade. Punz was aware of that. And Techno was a very animal-loving person based on how many pets he had and how well cared for those were. So it makes sense that Dream would stick around him. Which also means it couldn't have been Techno who turned him or Philza by extension. Or if they did, then by accident. But Dream shouldn't- wouldn't stick around them if they were the ones to intentionally turn him. Surely he would-
Punz shook their head. It had to be Dream. It just had to. Which created a whole new can of worms. How to turn him back to his usual human self. They had a few ideas. But they first had to talk them over with Dream.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
"Techno, tell your owl to stop scaring my crows."
"You say that as if i have any control over what said owl does."
"More than me for sure, mate."
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
Ranboo was... anxious to say the least about the owl. It didn't seem to harm any of them but that didn't make its near nightly stare at him through the window less creepy. He did appreciate that it never seemed to look directly into his eyes. But it was still staring at them. At night.
They wondered if it did that the whole night. Considering how they saw it on Techno a few times and more times on one of the wolves or on Steve, they'd guess not. But they also aren't sure.
But they have an idea on how to maybe get it to stop being so creepy.
Treats! Every animal likes treats. Or at least all the ones hanging around the arctic do. Minus the owl maybe but they're about to find out. They cut bits off from one of their raw chicken meat and are approaching the fence where the owl is sitting carefully. The squishiness of the meat didn't help with their nervousness. Still they kept walking forward stiffly, arm outstretched with the meat in hand.
The owl stared down at him, at the meat in his hand.
Yeah, okay they couldn't do this. They swiftly turned around back to their house. Steps still as stiff as before they proceeded to the door only to freeze when the meat was suddenly torn out of their hand by a ghostly shape. Seconds later, a weight settled on their left shoulder. Sharp needles dug slightly into it. Not enough to properly hurt but enough to feel it.
Their neck turned robotically towards it and came face to face with two dark green eyes looking at their nose (as small as it was compared to humans or the beak of the owl). "Good- good owly?"
They continued staring at each other. Slowly the owl turned its face towards the small bag attached to their side. The one where they had more pieces of meat for the owl. It was likely the smell, Ranboo reasoned. That's why it knew of it. With that explanation they grabbed another piece and held it in front of the owl. It grabbed the bit with its beak and swallowed it quickly.
The owl almost looked to be smiling at them. Ranboo remembered Techno scratching the owl a bit on its head. Slowly so that the owl could fly away if discomforted by it, they reached their hand out towards it. It made no move besides watching the hand.
Soft. So incredibly soft. These feathers are wonderful. No surprise Techno liked petting it as much as he did. This felt amazing. And the owl let him. It was weird. Weird in a good way.
✦-----✦ (o v o) ✦-----✦
Getting blood out of clothing sucked quite frankly. Philza knew this for eons.
Getting blood out of bedsheets sucked just as much.
"What happened?" Niki asked with a worried look on her face as she continued petting the perpetrator on the head. Dream looked content with himself. Out of all the trickeries Dream did as an owl, this one had to be Philza's least favourite. The short jumpscare of something passing him by silently and quickly was not as tedious as getting blood out of anything.
All these years and yet no one has made some kind of potion that removes blood stains instantly.
"A rodent incident," Philza answered after a few more seconds of staring at the pinkish stain on the sheets that were trying outside.
"Oh no."
Dream lifted his head, leaning more into the touches Niki provided.
If Philza hadn't seen the transformation with his own two eyes, he thinks sometimes he wouldn't believe that owl to be Dream right now. The image of this affectionate and cuddly owl didn't fit with the powerhouse and menace he knew Dream to be.
It's strange. It's not- It just didn't fit.
The bed-sheet-ruining and scaring-away-uninvited-guests owl was more fitting.
Punz stalked silently through the snowy forest near the Anarchist's homes. They had a solid list of ideas on how to potentially turn Dream back. Depending on what worked, they could even figure out how to turn others into animals or themselves again. It would allow them to hide in plain sight as long as no one caught on.
But first they had to get their boss back.
Ideally, they wouldnt have to talk to either of the anarchists here. But even if they did, the public fallout that Dream and Punz had planned didn't happen yet. So they should be able to trust him with a smaller version of Dream.
A gust of wind closely behind them stopped them in their tracks.
It could just be nothing but they turned to the left and-
On a branch sat a feathered body with green eyes that seemed to glow in the dark. Glow in a beautiful acidic hue Punz could only compare to the life orbs mobs and players drop upon death. Beautiful like the strings that brought Punz back from the dead on multiple occasions. Warpping around their soul softer than expected and pulling them into their body.
"Hey Dream. Been wondering where you've been." The corner of their mouth raised in amusement as the owl- as Dream screeched in response. They held an arm out in front of them. Dream stared at it before spreading his wings and flying down onto it. Once there, Punz scratched the top of Dream's head, careful to avoid the area on his back to avoid any … misunderstandings.
"I've got some ideas on how to help turn you back maybe if you're up for some tests." Dream nodded, an action that looked rather weird with the body that acted it out. "Good. Then let's head back. I've been translating some more of the pages from that book we found and I found some potions recipes that seem promising. And also-"
Chirping echoed through the cloudy space as one of the more ghostly blobs watched the human-turned-owl converse with one of XD's favourite humans. It had certainly been entertaining to watch how the dreamer reacted and adpated to the owl form. Especially the way he handled perceived invaders to the arctic region.
But the main plot had to continue. XD would just need to decide what manages to turn Dream back.
The ghostly blob excitedly chirped more while zooming around a blob with a squirrel tail in a speed that made it nearly look like a blur. Hm. Maybe they should let the little creatures inspire more incidents.
Commotion came from the area of the stage. It was rather easy to pick out Techno's voice among the others even with Dream and Punz's hiding spot. They had him. They would lock him on display as the anvil fell.
Dream hoped the piglin found a totem of undying with the map he gave, especially considering both their skills with maps. It wouldn't prevent him from dying, but it would prevent it from being permanent and Dream having to use an item, he'd rather keep hidden from all except for Punz for a bit longer.
They both kept watch as things progressed. Until Dream gave the signal and Punz pearled in. The surprise was working, all of them were caught off guard. Dream headed down towards Carl and guided them both to a place near the van where Techno had to spot them and would hopefully then come to him.
But instead of the green flash of life magic or the white flash from visiting death, there was a pink one. Quick and left behind a similarly coloured mist that moved through the cage and past him towards the hole where Dream had planned to lead Techno to. Where his items were.
Dream followed it closely with the horse, blocking off the entry after and ignoring the yells behind him. The mist didn't stop, heading further down to where he had placed the iron armour and other items that Techno could have used, as well as the few items that Dream had already managed to steal back from the butcher army.
The chest with Techno's name on it glowed faintly from inside before dimming.
When he opened it, the sword, Orphan Oblitorator was still faintly glowing before the glow became a shimmer similar to that of an enchantment except for the colour difference. Instead of the purple, it was the same pink as the times before. He chuckled. So undeniably Techno. He couldn't imagine anyone else with that shade.
His suspicions that formed with the mist were confirmed and he didn't know how to feel about it. Maybe relief that he's not the only one. Maybe curiosity. It didn't matter.
What mattered was getting Techno out. Especially now that the piglin couldn't really do it himself unless the sword suddenly grew two legs or wings.
Considering the height the anvil fell from, he estimated it would take more than a day for Tech to reform. A time he would need to either ensure was spent away from enemies' hands himself or have someone he could trust do it.
Phil would be a good option. A long-time and trusted friend of Technos. If only he wasn't under house arrest and it wouldn't be too risky to try breaking him out now. He'd have to wait. Punz and Sam would be other good options. Both trustworthy and dedicated. But both were busy.
He'd probably prefer to do it himself anyway.
The items left for Techno got put back into his inventory before he gently lifted the sword and put it into the sheath around his belt. It shouldn't prevent him from coming back like putting him in his inventory would. And besides, an inventory slot doesn't fit Technoblade. The sheath doesn't really either but it's at least a bit better.
"I've got you," he whispered.
Dream was about to head further down when he spotted Quackity behind him, expression first surprised then souring into anger. "What the- Dream? What the fuck. Of course. Of course, you are here. Where is Technoblade? Did you help him escape? How did- How did you do it?"
The words "I wish" were on his tongue. If he actually had managed to help him escape, if he had any plan for that, Technoblade wouldn't be recharging inside the sword right now.
Subtly he tried to remove the sword from Quackity's eyesight while starting to gesture with his hands. "You really think Techno would need my help to escape? I mean I'm flattered, y'know? But he didn't need me."
"Sure. Sure. So you have Carl just for fun. Wanted another horse whose leather can be swung in front of your face." Dream's grip on the orphan obliterator tightened, still, he refrained from swinging any weapons, least of all swinging that sword. "Where is Techno, Dream? I saw Punz. You told him to disrupt the execution, didn't you?"
"To be fair, Techno has enough to buy Punz himself. He wouldn't need me for that."
"Everyone knows how you two are working together." They know, for now, Dream thought. "So tell me where Techno is and how you helped him escape or this will get ugly. I will even let you keep the horse if you spit it out."
"Hmm. I mean this would be a lot more threatening if it wasn't coming from you." Quackity for all his skill in getting people to join his cause, wasn't a fighter. "So listen. I'm gonna go with Carl and you go back to your country. Got that?"
"I won't let you leave, Dream. Tell me where he is." Quackity demanded as he held the diamond axe pointed to him.
"No. I won't just tell you where he is even if i knew."
"Okay, that's it." Quackity ran straight at him which nearly made Dream want to chuckle. He didn't pay attention to the words exchanged after the first hit. The fight - which could barely even be called that - was over quickly. A few hits with Nightmare and the duck hybrid crumbled to the floor. Breath wheezing from how it tried to still get in air despite the slit throat.
Dream kneeled down, looking Quackity in the eyes. "Don't waste your breath."
Seconds later, the body dissolved. Slowly fading to signify the first life lost and the other two remaining. With flint and steel, he burned the scattered items, only taking those that seemed useful. Tactics from back when he was hunted more widely still were useful.
After a quick check on his surroundings to ensure no more surprise attackers, he started leading Carl again, hoping the faint whispers of "Blood for the Blood God" he could hear were just his imagination. Maybe Technoblade's influence.
At some point, the path opened up more which also meant Dream could go onto the horse again, which he did after holding out a golden apple to it. It inspected the food with a few sniffs before deeming it safe and biting into it while Dream petted it. A beautiful and strong horse. He could see why Technoblade liked it.
He settled on its back and quickly ordered it forward. The rest of the way went by in a breeze despite sticking to the Overworld. Nether travel seemed risky with how they might predict it.
The cabin was soon in view. The moon is by now high up and reflecting the sun's light down onto the world.
He stepped down and fed another golden apple to it. Ignoring background whispers of him spoiling the horse and being soft. Softwastaken. Dreamwassoft. Not the strangest of thoughts his mind summoned. Though they were annoying nonetheless.
There was no one in the cabin except for the animals and enderman Techno was housing. It felt empty without the piglin’s big figure and warm voice. He should be back soon.
But for now, he racked his brain for whatever Punz usually does if he is like this. Keep out of inventory. Keep close or hidden. Repair of broken. Wait.
Techno was still out of his inventory and in his sheat. His plan for now was to stick around till either Techno came out again or Phil escaped which he should message Punz for. See if they can figure out a way. Later.
Dream remembers feeling his surroundings when he was like the piglin is now. He mulled over it a bit as he ventured upstairs and placed Techno on the bed. The blanket was left off of him. He didn't know how, when or where Techno would form, best to keep it uncovered.
Something Punz would sometimes do is fix him if he had any rips in his other form. But Techno's sword didn't seem in need of any repairs. The blade was as sharp as ever and beautifully smooth. The handle provided a good grip even if it was a bit large for Dream. It's design still left him in awe. It was a masterpiece just like its soul.
Which made him wonder how Techno had become like this. Was he born or rather made like this? Or was he cursed like Dream? Or maybe not a curse but a connection through many battles won and much blood spilt that led to his soul possessing the sword after his death?
But if he wasn't always like this when did it change? How long has he been the spirit of a sword? Did-
A squeak interrupted his mind. Something small, furry and white peaked out from the trapdoor before scrambling further up and along till it was on the bed. Dream was about to rush forward but stopped in his tracks when he saw the fox was just curling up on top of the sword.
It was just cuddling with its owner. Wait, does it know that’s Techno? Can animals sense object’s souls when they are in the object? He’s gonna need to test this once he can. Speaking of testing, he meant to text Punz.
You whisper to Punz: did you get away?
Punz whispers to you: yes. only a few minor cuts. how about you?
You whisper to Punz: same on my end
You whisper to Punz: is phil still under house arrest?
Punz whispers to you: yes. want me to get him out?
You whisper to Punz: yes
You whisper to Punz: Techno is like me
You whisper to Punz: currently recharging on his bed
You whisper to Punz: will wait till Phil gets here or he gets back
Punz whispers to you: alright
He looked back to the bed where the fox seemed asleep by now. On the nightstand, he spotted a few trinkets. A smaller bell, a lapis lazuli, a letter, a stone that looks familiar and a book. Curious he came closer till he could make out the title. “Love Across Dimensions”. It didn’t sound like something he could see Techno read. Even more curious now, he opened it to the first few pages and quickly got even more surprised or rather confused.
It turned out to be an encyclopedia on courting rituals in different species ranging from the common human to the rarest ender dragon hybrid. There was a loose page with different hybrid species written down including dragon, goat and avian.
Dream opened the list of contents again and flipped shortly to the piglin section. He got a few sentences in before another ping got him out.
Punz whispers to you: Btw, congrats on the kill
He messaged back a quick thanks and then put the book back where it was. With nothing else to do but wait, he shifted into a wolf to better blend in just in case anyone came in.
Settled beside the bed, he keeps his ears sharp, listening for any threat.
Nothing happens for hours until the wall gets drenched in a pink hue.
Dream glances up to the bed. The sword is glowing, the fox now moved further down the bed away from it. The pink mist from before exits the sword again and shapes into a familiar form.
Technoblade groans from where he reformed again and Dream forgets for a second which shape he took and lets out a yip, drawing Techno's attention.
“Huh? You’re not one of my dogs. How did you get in here?”
Deciding he’d rather not have Techno know he’s a wolf right now, he heads straight down and out, opening the door with little issue. He hears the piglin call out for him but ignores it. If Techno knew, the shifter wouldn't hear the end of it.
And later when they prepare for Doomsday and Techno mentions the wolf with a smirk towards Dream’s direction, he will deny any relation at all. Denial which Techno will not believe.
Summary: While in prison, Techno finds out a new fact about Dream and with it a new escape route opens up for his roommate. The choice of whether or not to use said escape plan gets taken out of their hands, however, when a visitor comes. (7,280 Words)
Aka. a Fic that was supposed to be finished on the 17th December for the Dreamnoblade Christmas Event. I just now managed to finish the second chapter which is why i didnt post it here before.
Bubbling of lava was the only sound reigning in the cell.
It had been weeks since Technoblade joined Dream in prison. Two months if Techno's inner clock was still to be trusted. Which it was more than Dream's at the very least. The green teletubby's was pretty destroyed by now considering he didn't even know how long he had been in prison so far.
And technically, Techno was already supposed to be out and about. By a bit under 2 months to be exact. Either Phil's inner clock was just as terrible as his roommates or he forgot to read the will.
Either way, it didn't seem like his original escape plan was happening any time soon. As a result, they had started to try digging a tunnel from the hole in the corner. And it was successful so far. They already got... two blocks downwards with Dream right now breaking the next one a bit to the side.
Every now and then he'd get him to pause a bit and eat something. Only having potatoes didn't give Techno much to work with but he still tried to cook them a bit so they weren't completely raw at least. It was working okay-ish, he'd say.
He wished being the spirit of an object would erase any need for food. Then at least they wouldn't need the potatoes. Unfortunately, they were only halfway a spirit so to say.
Speaking of that subject. He was still curious how Dream seemed to know what to do with him when he was recharging in the sword. It’s not common knowledge after all. And he doubts there are many books on the topic if any. So the only way he could see Dream knowing about this was through personal experience. Which brought up another question.
Was Dream friends with someone like Techno or was Dream himself like him?
Glancing over to his roommate, it was hard to tell. Similarities to the object are usually only obvious once the object is known. But considering he also didn't know what Dream even was, it would be even harder.
His right eye reminded him much of an eye of ender down to the slitted pupil while the other was more pale, probably a result of what also caused the scar across said eye. His hair was as white as snow but that seemed more recent. Looking at his black hands, he still didn’t have any more clue. He could see the guy as the spirit of a weapon, maybe his Nightmare axe but he knew that didn’t need to be true. Philza once told him off a librarian who had been the spirit of the very library she worked at. There was also someone that had been the soul of a pair of elytras.
“What are you staring at?” Dream asked in an annoyed tone.
“How did you know what to do?”
“What do you-”
“At the execution, when I had to retreat into the sword. How did you know what to do?”
Dream stared to the side. “Does it matter?”
“Of course. Chat’s curious. Imagine the clout I could get from potentially unlocking more of the mysterious guy’s backstory.”
“Well, curiosity killed the cat.” The guy muttered, probably in an attempt to get Techno to stop pursuing the topic. Unfortunately for both, Techno could be stubborn.
“But satisfaction brought it back. And besides, Technoblade never dies and with it Chat too. Thought you’d know by now.” Techno chuckled.
Dream grumbled.
-----
There were many topics Dream would rather talk about than this. So many in fact that Dream tried to pick any that would distract Techno from the current one.
“You know, if you are also like me, you can just tell me. I won’t judge. I won’t use it against you or whatever you think I will do.”
“Why are you talking like you already know?”
“Call it a hunch. I have been told to have a sixth sense by some.” The piglin grinned at the other who in turn raised an eyebrow as the edge of his lips moved slightly up.
“A sixth sense or voices that whisper hints?”
“Eh. Same thing.”
Dream's tail swished back and forth as silence resumed. His thoughts stayed on the topic, debating with himself if he maybe should tell him. He already clearly knew that he was something. Besides, Dream knew what Techno was.
“Fine.” Dream stared back at the lava wall, vehemently ignoring Techno’s presence and gaze at him as he stood up.
“So are you-”
“I’m the Revival Book.” Dream confessed to Techno with a firm look all while broadening his shoulders and uncurling. Something Techno seemed to find amusing, though he didn't comment on it. Though it was unsurprising. Technoblade still seemed taller despite sitting. Taller and handsomer with the orange glow of the lava throwing him into a warm hue.
"Ah." was all that Techno uttered at first. Eyes slightly widened either at Dream telling him or the object named.
Dream's tail kept swishing back and forth behind him and he resisted the urge to wrap it around his own leg. "Well, roommate who is also the spirit of the book that can bring people back. I may have a new escape idea." Techno announced happily though Dream could see the nervousness on his face which made him instantly hesitate.
"And what's that?"
“You know how we can retreat into our object at any time if we want to? If you have the book here, what if you-”
“No.” Dream could see where this was going and no way in hell would he do that.
"Very fair. Very fair. Can't blame ya considering the horror stories that exist. I can tell ya, being stuck in someone's inventory is not pleasant. 1/5 stars. I'd take this vacation over that any day." Techno chuckled. “Well. Guess we will stick to the current plan.”
“What would it even bring? I can walk myself out so me being in your inventory won’t bring much. At most, there’s one less person to fight against Sam and anyone else who wants to stop us.”
“Well, not if a certain someone finally read the note I left him. You know how I knew this was a trap? Well I had planned that someone gets me out via a stasis pearl chamber. If he still were to read the note at some point, I could get us both out as long as you have the book with you here. But also I get it if you don’t wanna.”
Dream stayed silent. What if Techno doesn’t ever let him out?
-----
More time passed. Techno’s suggestion was almost like an elephant in the room, keeping a certain amount of tension in it. Neither spoke about it. Not that they talked that much during said time anyway. Only quick words when food got dropped in or the silence got too much. Despite not doing much, this place had a strange way of sucking the energy out of people. Probably the mining fatigue extending into more areas than just mining.
A chance to escape, one requiring lots of trust. Techno wouldn’t blame him if he passed up on it. He would still return later for the teletubby whether the guy trusted him or not. He couldn’t leave him here. When he first heard of Dream’s imprisonment he figured the favour would be used for a breakout. By now Dream wouldn’t even have to use the favour for it. Techno get him out with or without it. He couldn’t leave anyone in here, especially someone who had never gone against him and instead assisted him. Heck, he had any chance to keep him in weapon form and instead took care that he could come back as soon as possible. He will get Dream out.
Who knows, maybe it's even a courtship behaviour for whatever species Dream is. He’s pretty sure he saw something with cages and caging under one species, either creepers or wardens.
He was brought out of his musings when Dream stepped in front of him, leaning against the wall in what looked like an attempt to keep the pressure off his right foot.
“Okay.” Dream’s voice cracked halfway through. It had gotten better before but with the new silence, the bit of progress regressed a bit.
“Heh?”
“You can put me in your inventory.” He could see Dream slightly shaking, something he tried to unsuccessfully suppress.
It took Techno several seconds to respond, surprised by either the trust or saddened by the desperation. Considering who it was, the latter seemed more likely even if he hoped it wasn’t that.
Before he could respond in any way shape or form though, redstone ticked loudly alongside the heavy shifting of machinery.
Dream tensed immediately, form stiffening more than Techno thought possible. He barely wasted a second as he put himself between his roommate and the slowly retreating lava curtain.
It only took him a small bit of time to register who was on the other side.
Sam, of course, Warden of the prison. And Quackity.
-----
"Well. Well. Well. If it isn't my two favourite prisoners. How have you been? You been good?" Quackity asked as he waltzed off the bridge wearing netherite armour and ...were those shears?
"Yeah, you know. We've just been chilling. Not much to do in here." Techno replied while keeping his eyes on him, only shortly glancing over to Dream who was standing in the other corner, leaning on the chest.
"Hm. Im sure. I'm sure." The duck's eyes squinted at him as the grin stayed on him. He turned around to where Sam was still observing them from the other side and called out "Okay, well. Sam-" Seeing a chance, Techno sprung forward, not seeing his roomy shaking his head as a pink fist connected with Quackity in an attempt to throw him into the lava below.
Unfortunately, the three months had taken their toll, the punch not doing much besides pushing Quackity a bit further just before the edge where he turned quickly to him. "Yo, what the fuck?! What the fuck is wrong with you, Techno?! We didn't even start! What is wrong with you?" Techno chuckled even as the duck was slashing at him with the shears, leaving multiple cuts of varying size and depth. "I was gonna ease into it. I was gonna ease into it. Okay but since you so clearly wanna rush things along, why not?"
"Sam! Keep this guy in check." Keeping him in check apparently meant, aiming a bow at him with an arrow notched, ready to fire any second.
When Techno looked back in the cell, he saw Dream near the hole, Quackity close to him. "Here's what's gonna happen. I am sick and tired of these prison visits." He stepped closer and closer to Dream, with his roommate trying to get further and further away to the other corner until he was pressed against the chest. "I've been trying to get the revival book for the longest time, Dream. And today, you are gonna give me the book. You wanna know why?"
"I'm not giving you the boo-"
Quackity slammed his fist against the wall right next to Dream's face. "You wanna know why? Because this guy, this guy right here is your only way out of here and if you won't give me the book, he dies and with it your only chance of getting out of here. That's the only reason he's here. So that I finally get the book after all this time you’ve wasted."
"That's kinda harsh,” muttered Techno. “Don't do it, Dream."
"You know what I don't even care if you break out. If this guy gets you out. All I care about is the Revival book, and you are gonna give it to me.” If Quackity had half the knowledge about stuff, he's gonna care a bit more probably. Besides, it's not like Techno can really die. Not unless his Sword gets smashed to bits and the Sword is safely tucked away at home. Speaking of death...
"Wait. Hear me out. Hear me out, Dream. Does he really have any leverage? Cause if he kills me and my best friend is a Necromancer, doesn't that kinda just work out? You could just revive me after. I'm just saying." Dream’s eyes were locked onto his, the same thought Techno had probably crossed him too. Techno won’t die. Then his gaze skittered to Quackity, awaiting his reaction which was as expected another slice of shears at the piglin before turning to Dream again.
"You know what just give me the Revive Book. Just give me it. I'm not playing games anymore. I don’t care."
“I can’t give you the Revival Book, you know that. Hell, even if I could give you the book you're just gonna kill me. And probably kill Techno right after. The whole reason I'm in here is cause I have the book. Otherwise, I'd be dead."
"Okay then you know what. What if I just killed you both right now? No more best friend for you, Techno. And no headaches for me. Why not stop the madness, right? Not like the book brought many good things with it anyway, did it? So I'm just gonna kill you both and get this over with."
"Now let's just relax first. Let's calm down." Techno tried, moving both hands up to no success as Quackity didn’t stop talking.
"No no. I should just kill you both right? So why not? Starting with you Techno and don’t think I’ gonna forget about you, Dream. And I'm gonna make sure it's painful enough as payment for ruining the execution and every second I have wasted here just because you couldn’t do a single thing. Just because you wouldn’t tell me and wouldn’t open that goddamn book." Any protests from Dream got ignored as Quackity turned to Techno. "I've been waiting a long ass time to do this." The first slash still hit him but the next got blocked by Dream who put himself between them. "Oh, you wanna go first? Wanna make sure that there's no chance for Techno to come back? Want him to watch his buddy die? Fine by me."
Techno tried to pull Dream away, out of Quackity's range but before he could make much progress, the rips on Dream's form spread. Rips that reminded him of torn-apart pages until they split apart entirely and green mist formed. Green mist which seemed to dissolve but turns out to have just entered the object as a book was left behind. One that Techno didn't hesitate to grab before Quackity could. And by the duck's wide grin and eyes, he knew that the guy was aware of what it was even if he didn't know the full extent of its connection to Dream. "Techno, give me the bo-" He saw the swing and felt part of the blade enter before the sensation abruptly left. His arms stayed raised in defence as he slowly took in where he was.
Blackstone walls with Nether bricks. A pink sheep connected with a led to a wall decoration bearing three wither skulls. Lava flowed down in the corners and stone bricks on the floor, some with moss.
It was the Syndicate Meeting Room. He was out. He was-
"Did it work?" A familiar voice. A familiar voice that he was incredibly glad to hear.
"Oh my god. Phil." He was still on edge as he turned to his best friend for years.
"Here, drink that. Drink that." The immortal handed him a glass of milk alongside a golden apple. Both of which Techno gladly consumed.
"Phil. I gave you that book three months ago, Phil!" Techno exclaimed once he swallowed the bite he took out of the apple. His wounds healed, stitching themselves back together with the feeling of pins and needles pricking his flesh.
"You said three months!" Philza tried to argue.
"No, I did not! I thought you'd take like two days. I've been in jail for three months!"
A look of realisation came across his oldest friend. "Wait, wait wait. Oh my god, you said three days."
"Bruuuh."
"Well at least you got a book out of it, it seems."
Ah. He nearly forgot. He looks down at his right hand, still holding the book, still holding Dream there.
"What's with it?"
"Well. The good news is, we don't need to head to the prison soon."
"Not fancying another visit to Dream?"
"I mean if he was still in there, I'd go back. You know break him out and stuff. Return the favour and all.” Techno moved back to his hair, settling down into it and setting Dream down on the table, out of his inventory even if it would probably take a while for him to come back with the hits he took.
"Did he break out?"
"Now yes. Next thing is waiting till he’s back." His gaze stayed on the book, noting the glowing green writing, and the firm but used-looking leather cover. An eye of ender was sitting on the front inside a golden frame. One that looked just like Dream's. Slowly the parallels became clearer.
The white hair from the pages that were still as white as snow despite the many years this book probably existed. The eye. The black on his hands from the ink that likely stained the pages. And the green highlights in his hair from the glowing title.
It made sense.
Dream is the spirit of the Revival Book.
----- ----- -----
It's been a few days since Technoblade got teleported out of the prison.
Getting used to being out again went well so far. Sure, he may be a bit apprehensive about potatoes now. For all the love he held for the multi-use vegetable, even he could apparently get enough of them, especially when he's had nothing but potatoes for weeks. If they had at least been prepared in different ways but no. A shame considering how many different delicious meals one could cook with them. But now he lacks any appetite for them. Dream probably won't have one either once he returns, whenever that is.
Dream's book was still on the pillow where Techno had put it upon entering the room. He figured out quickly that he wasn't entirely comfortable with leaving Dream out of his sight in this state. Sure, he'd probably notice if anyone tried to sneak in but this felt safer. Besides, this way he got a comfortable amount of warmth from the fireplace while still staying a good distance away. Techno's been freezing more than usual after getting used to the heat of the cell. No doubt Dream would have even more issues considering his longer stay. He's probably gonna need several layers of clothing when he comes back.
If he comes back.
Techno tried to shake that thought.
Now he knows that there can be different recharging times from one object spirit to another. Heck, with all the things Dream went through in that prison, it shouldn't be surprising that he took a bit longer. It didn't stop Techno's worry from constantly nagging. It didn't stop a few of the voices from throwing in their concerns as well.
The book still had that green shine over it. Dream was still alive. Logically, he knew that. The small bit of a tail he had barely ever ceased from swishing back and forth whenever his thoughts drifted to his roommate. There was nothing he could do but wait. Wait and hope Dream returned.
Knock, knock.
Techno turned to the door, hand already on his sword's handle before he even thought about it. Silently, he neared the door.
Chances were, it was just Phil who had made it a habit to check on him daily. Preferring to be safe than sorry though, Techno listened first to make out anything suspicious. Not that it was needed when a voice soon rang out. "Heya, mate. It's me." Just Phil. He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and nearly earned Phil's fist in his face when he opened the door.
"You know, I'm all for trying out new greetings but I don't think a fist to the face is the best." Techno smiled more when Phil let out a laugh at that.
"Didn't expect you at the door so soon. Anyway, you ready for the meeting?"
He stared at his friend blankly for a tick. And another. "About that..." He sheepishly looked away, avoiding Phil's gaze.
"Did you forget about it?"
"Yup." His mind was running between preparing for any unwanted visitors, preparing for when Dream was back and taking care of his usual chores. Everything else had slipped his mind.
Phil clapped him on the back. "It's fine. Come on. We still got time."
They packed and headed out with Techno carrying Dream in a bag that would hopefully not prevent him from forming like being in an inventory would. The meeting itself went by in a blur. His mind drifted to the book beside him. To the person in it. Like it always seemed to. Even before this whole thing, his mind would sometimes drift to Dream. Curious about what his favourite flower might be, his favourite animal and more.
When Niki and Ranboo asked where he'd been the last months, Phil answered for him. Explaining how he'd been locked up and stuck there till Phil, rather late, got him out with the stasis chamber. What followed were concerns about Dream's breakout and questions of if he had anything to do with it to which Techno was honest. Though he did try to avoid mentioning how Dream's like him, well aware that the teletubby would prefer as few people as possible to know his status as spirit. Techno himself avoided many people knowing. Too many had wished to wield the sword that housed the mighty warrior.
Luckily, he managed to calm them mostly down, partly thanks to bringing up a few things about how the prison was handled and reassurances that he would ensure their safety.
The meeting got dismissed rather early and once Techno was back at his cabin, he only went out to feed the animals again before falling into bed, taking the book with him.
-----
More days passed. So many hours and still Dream didn't come back out. Techno continued with attempts to keep his worry down. Him and Dream just take different times to form again. The teletubby had been tortured for weeks by the time he was there. They had different objects, him a sword and Dream a book. Maybe it's the material. Maybe- Maybe Quackity had carved into Dream while in the book. So many factors that could delay it. So many reasonable explanations.
Maybe Dream just didn't feel safe to come back around him? He tried not to think about that. But also, he couldn't blame Dream if that was the case. He couldn't put him outside. That was too risky. What if someone decided to visit right then and take him? No one had come to attack yet. No warden or duck or ex-best-friends with a murderous promise. None. Yet.
He glanced at the unmoving book on what could probably be considered a makeshift nest. Pillows and blankets and a cloak he had made for Dream surrounded the book from beneath and around. The faint green shimmer never stopped, reminding Techno of an enchanted object. It reminded him of how Phil and Chat described his sword whenever he was inside.
It was beautiful and unnerving at once. The longer he stared, the more he could see the parallels between the book and Dream. The eye of ender on the cover fit with the one Dream had. The green glowing writing in enchanting language matched the words he could see through some tears in the clothing Dream wore when they tried the book on Techno. The pages nearly looked white as snow or rather Dream's hair. If he took a guess, the ink used for the words and sketches inside was probably as black as the tips of Dream's claws that gradually went over to his usual skin tone along the arm or the words on his skin when not using the book.
He gently felt along the cover with one of his hands before removing it as if burned. He technically held the book for multiple minutes by this point - hours if one were to include the time he accidentally fell asleep with it in his arms - still he tried to keep it to a minimum for Dream's sake. He knew Dream wasn't the biggest with touch. Touch-starved? Most likely, based on how he still leaned towards Techno in prison and how he'd been before, way before. Willing to touch? Eh. Considering the bits he learned while roommating with him in prison, it wasn't surprising. Trust this broken is hard to get again, even more so when all recent touch seemed to have been with the intent to hurt.
It reminds him of himself before he met Phil.
A groan brought him out of his musings. Steve was looking at him with such a puppy-eye look that Techno barely had to think about what he wanted. "You hungry, Steve?" Another groan. "Alright. Alright. You get your food." He rose back to full height before picking Dream's book up. "Just need to do something quickly." He tried to carry as many blankets and pillows too before moving everything downstairs into a mostly hidden corner in the basement and restarting the nest. Maybe if the delay was due to being constantly in the same room as him, this would help Dream feel comfortable enough to come back.
He stepped away, eyes on the book before turning and climbing back up and started making dinner.
-----
Having many animals had its perks, Techno would like to note. They were good company, fighters and more. However, they could also be a disturbance to his plans.
When Techno woke up the next day, he found Dream's book next to him, one of the foxes lying on top of it.
He sighed, before softly petting the fox which continued to sleep despite the gradual removal of the book from below it. With it in hand, he headed down and started his daily routine, item placed once more on a seat near the fire.
The voices started throwing different suggestions for why Dream was still in there. Ranging from simple refusal to death. He tried to ignore that last suggestion. Dream couldn't be dead. The book would have to be destroyed. Just like the sword had to be broken and shattered into pieces for Techno to die. The voices were wrong. Nothing more to it.
He tended to his farm and animals, cooked and fixed some of the fence around their clearing that was starting to deteriorate a bit. A squirrel shortly paused his work as it climbed along the structure.
It was when he was putting away the dishes that a green light from behind made him freeze.
Turning showed a green mist taking shape around the book and a second later, Dream sat there, left eye focused on Technoblade as his face shifted between multiple microexpressions.
Dream was there. Dream was back. His hair was still white, one eye with a whiteish hue over it and one leg missing.
They both stared at each other for several ticks.
"Welcome back, teletubby." Techno greeted him, trying to go for humour with all the relief in his chest at seeing Dream out.
"Why didn't you open it?" Dream asked, voice rough from not having used it in more than two weeks. A frown sat on his face.
"Huh?"
"I've been inside for days. You had so many chances. Why didn't you open it?" Dream looked at him as if he had grown a second head. As if he was a puzzle he couldn't solve.
"Why should I?" Techno asked back. "You didn't give away what was inside even under torture. I could be wrong but I was under the impression you weren't really a fan of anyone else knowing what was written inside."
"Yeah, but not like that ever mattered. It sure as hell didn't matter when Sam let Quackity in the first time. Didn't matter when Quackity tried to get it to open with an axe while I was inside."
"It matters to me," Techno responded, stomach sinking at the thought of someone attacking him while inside the object. No wonder Dream's right leg didn't form. Severe damage could limit how much of one's body can be formed. Especially if it's damage to his object. He wouldn't be surprised if his torturer had intentionally aimed at his leg in hopes this would happen.
Dream was silent, eyes moved to the side as Techno's own flickered over Dream, trying to find anything else that was missing or damaged. Except for a missing ring finger, he didn't find much to be concerned about. Scars of course. Plenty. One or two in the form of a familiar smile, some burn scars and others from an axe or knife. But nothing else that would impact Dream's ability to move much.
After many more ticks, Techno clapped his hands. "So, anyway. I made some food if you want. Fish with spinach. It should still be warm."
His roommate squinted at him. "I'm fine. I can get some myself."
"Sure. Sure but I may have made too much, so really, you'd be doing me a favour," Techno continued, hoping for an agreement. And he got one, although reluctant and with obvious scepticism.
He didn't let that dissuade him though and put some of the food on a plate before noticing a slight shake in Dream's hands. "Wanna sit at the table?"
Dream looked to it before shaking his head. "Alright. Hope I didn't salt it too much though. Phil says I sometimes go overboard." He also for some reason had always accompanied it with a wink which Techno was still confused by, though that detail didn't feel important.
After sniffing at it and still looking for something off, Dream took a bite and then another. He didn't keep track of how many but it turned out too much as it didn't take long for Dream's face to turn pale and attempt to rush outside only to reach a window and promptly throw up.
Ah right. Stomach's not used to that much.
-----
Carefully, Techno cut more and more slices of wood away. The form was slowly becoming recognisable much to his satisfaction, but there was still a decent way to go. Once finished, it would fit neatly next to the wolf, crow and pig carved from the same material. After that, he already had another one in mind.
The fire in the chimney flickered softly. It crackled regularly from the bits of water in the wood which was unavoidable. The warmth helped well with the current weather. A snowstorm ruled outside. Not the strongest snowstorm that Techno had ever seen but still not one that should be underestimated.
Looking over to Dream, who sat on a couch near the chimney, he was somewhat glad for the weather. The guy was determined to get out and do whatever stupid thing he had in mind. And that was when his body hadn't even fully healed to its capability.
Not to mention the appointment he had booked for Dream to get him a prosthetic because let's be honest, Techno doesn't have the medical and mechanical knowledge required to get Dream a good one. Not even a decent one. There was maybe one or two people on the server who could make a good one, but Techno didn't trust either of them with this.
Safe to say, Techno wasn't entirely comfortable with letting Dream out and about. Not until he at least healed more. And even then he hoped the guy would stick around. Continue the roommates arc and all. Nothing else. Chat shut up.
In his slight distraction, he slipped and the carving knife cut him on his finger. It luckily didn't get deep, piglin skin is rather sturdy, still blood exits. He put the wood and tool to the side and went to get a cloth to stop the bleeding. When he turned from the cabinet where he got the cloth though, Dream stood right there, eyes fixated on where the wound is, the cut looking like a crack in metal.
"Let me look at it." Confused, Techno did.
Dream held his hand and Techno could feel his face heating up for some reason. His friend leaned down with his head so close that he could feel the heat of his breath as he whispered something Techno couldn't make out. A tick and he felt the skin there tickle. The wound glowed green as it sealed shut. Stunned he kept staring at where there was just a wound but now there was nothing. Only a small faint scar that's barely noticeable.
"How did you-"
"The book didn't just have the secrets to revival." Techno glanced up and saw Dream also still looking at where the wound was. He shortly lifted his head before averting his gaze and moving back to where he was with the help of the stick one of the woods wolves - one that for some reason loved to steal Techno’s glasses - gave him.
-----
It started with the wolves barking outside.
They didn't bark when it was a friend. Every time Niki, Ranboo, Phil or Dream entered this area, the dogs didn't bark. That was the first sign for them to get ready.
They had discussed this, him and Dream. Techno would go out, armour and weapons at the ready. Dream would try to hide somewhere in the house where he hopefully won't be found while Techno tries to get them out of this with the least amount of bloodshed. As much as Techno wanted to get back at Quackity and Sam, killing them could lead to more unwanted attention from the rest of the server, especially if they got confirmation that Dream was still with Techno instead of on his own somewhere. Right now, the priority was safety.
So Dream hid himself away covered by Steve. As embarrassing as the position seemed, Dream figured neither of the two looking for him would risk angering a bear just to see or get what seemed to be in its grip.
If he had a mouth, he would have stopped breathing when he heard Quackity enter. And he knew those footsteps even if they sounded more unsure. He also knew the ones that followed and noted a third one he expected missing. Just Quackity and Technoblade then. Sam probably stayed outside in case Dream tried to sneak away.
The two inside were talking. Dream knew they were talking but he couldn't focus on the words. He tried to. He needed to know but he couldn't. Mind
A screech cut through his haze. For a second he worried that it was Techno before registering the next words. "Technoblade, get your fox off of me, dude. Get your fucking fox off of me."
Dream tried to peek and sense what was going on and got a rough image. A dark blue figure shook in pain as a smaller, way smaller green one tore into his arm that had reached up to a bookcase.
"Aw, come on. They just want to play. Ain't that right, Em?"
"It's literally biting me. Get it off of me." Dream had to admit, that fox was determined. She didn't let off despite the way Quackity shook his arm. Good fox.
Blood was soaking through his sleeves when one of the wolves came from behind and bit into his leg, mauling on it multiple times. It didn't go missing on him that it's the same he lost and he wondered for a second if the hound knew.
If it wasn't for his current mouthless state, Dream would have burst out laughing when another one bit into the intruder. For a second, he thought they might be close to actually kill-
Quackity's form poofed, leaving his items behind. He heard a cackle from somewhere in the room. He'd have thought it was himself if he could make sounds. Instead, it was Technoblade who seemingly couldn't hold it in himself.
"Well done, Em and June. Well done, you two." Techno praised them. Tears crinkled at the edge of his eyes as he petted them.
He stood back up properly and went to the door only to come back rather quickly. "Welp. Sam dipped too. Probably scared of the big fearsome fox and hound. Probably helped that Ravyn was outside too." Techno's gaze stayed on the outside a bit more. Likely making sure that no one was there anymore. "Dream, you can come out. Pretty sure we are not gonna have to worry about them for a bit."
Dream did so after a few more ticks. Forming around the book again. However, he realised a moment too late that it left him stuck with Steve, who seemed to like holding him. "Um. Techno. A little help?"
"You know what? Nah. Who am I to take my emotional support bear's emotional support war criminal."
"Techno!" Dream tried to wiggle out of the soft arms, only to be held closer. He would have tried again if not for the snout moving against him as the wolf that still had blood around its snout was starting to lean against him. Same for the fox as they seemed to cuddle together against him.
Moving would be impossible now without accidentally hitting one of them.
Reluctantly, Dream gave up, sagging in Steve's hold while Techno brought in two more wolves. One snowy one and one woods. Both joined the animals already resting and Dream didn't need to look up to see Techno smirking at him.
"When I get out, I'll get my revenge."
"Sure you will, bud. Sure you will. What do you want for dinner?"
"...Broccoli Gratin."
-----
Dream settled back in the same place on the couch the next day. Once more idly watching as Techno carved a new wooden figure that Dream could make out to be a cat. It looked good already. Incredibly so. He had spotted the wooden figures on his shelves before and debated asking but never did.
"Whe-" His voice cracked. He moved past. "When did you start with wood carving?"
"Uh. Probably around eight months ago? Give or take. Been wanting to get into it a few years ago. Didn't really get to. Stuff got in the way. Lost the books teaching woodcarving. Got called to war. You know, usual things?"
"Heh. Yeah. Usual."
Dream's gaze shortly went up to Techno's eyes. They were blue. Like the sky but, more colourful. Like aquamarine. Like the gem on his sword.
"You know, I wasn't always the spirit of a sword." Techno at some point voiced. "It's been... roughly about a hundred years ago I think. I was in an arena, one of their best champions even if their treatment of me never really matched it. The audience would cheer whenever I fought, not that it mattered to the owners besides the money it brought them." He huffed. Dream stared, unsure how to respond.
"I was good enough that I caught a certain god's attention. The Blood God loves to see fights and apparently, he loved to watch mine. So much so that he gave me a blessing." The last word was accompanied by a tone he couldn't pinpoint. Dream glanced back down to the figure the other was still carving.
"That night, I became immortal. Not to be killed unless the sword he gave me was shattered beyond repair. It was also the night I became free. So both immortality and freedom. Pog if you ask me." Techno seemed to be carving details like the eyes and mouth now. He was silent after that. It took only a few more ticks for Dream to open his mouth instead.
"I made a deal with Schlatt. He got protection and an army, I got the book. Then one moment I was there, burning a copy of the book, the next, I was like this." It was less than Techno told him. But Techno didn't need to know about the experiments. He didn't need to know about Punz and how somehow only he became the spirit of the book, not his mercenary.
"Huh. Always thought you were a bookworm. You sure you don't write any fanfics?"
"Oh my god, no." Dream immediately responded.
"That was a suspiciously quick denial," the piglin joked.
"No, it's not. What?" A smile tugged at his lips, tail swishing back and forth behind him.
"Come on. What's your pen name? I promise I won't tell a soul." Techno grinned.
"No, I'm leaving." Dream said as he planned to stand up, only for one of the wolves to settle on top of him.
"Yes. Good, Yawn." Techno encouraged.
"No, No. Bad." Dream tried to discourage it to no avail.
"Well. Guess you're stuck now. Now where were we?"
Dream leaned his head back, scratching the spotted wolf with one hand.
-----
Dream couldn't sleep. It was nothing new. He spent plenty of nights awake either by choice or inability. Usually, though, he didn't need to figure out a way how to get out of another person's arms.
Slowly, he started shifting into a mouse, making himself small and light enough that hopefully, Techno wouldn't wake. He stepped along the bedsheets and down onto the floor. He gave his sleeping roommate one last glance before changing to a screech owl and quietly flying himself down the ladder and through an open window. Once on the porch, he shifted back.
It was cold. Freezingly so. He didn't have the cloak. Or anything really fitting for the temperature.
Just a few hundred ticks and then he'd go back in.
Before the time passed though, he heard the floorboards inside creak and just a few ticks later, a cloak found its way around him and a certain piglin next to him.
"Nice night, isn't it? The sky's so clear you can even see the stars and constellations like the Nightmare Eater and the Lava Walker." Techno spoke softly. Eyes up to the sky as well.
"Which ones are those?" Dream asked, not so much for the knowledge about stars and more just to hear Techno's voice.
His roommate pointed to different stars while leaning closer to Dream, their heads next to each other. "This one's Nightmare Eater. A phantom that feasted upon the nightmares of gods till they had enough and punished it by turning it into stars, never to get another meal." He pointed to another cluster. "And that's Lava Walker. A strider who had helped a young adventurer get help from his friends after falling down from a great height in the nether. The injury could have caused his death if the strider didn't get them. As thanks, the lil guy got immortalised."
Dream looked from the stars to Techno, seeing them reflect in his eyes. A sparkle in his blue eyes that entranced Dream. He didn’t even notice their hands being intertwined.
Techno turned his head down, looking back at Dream after noticing his silence. His eyes flickered to his lips.
They stared at each other as the moon shone down on them.
With the stars as only witnesses, Techno kissed Dream and Dream kissed back.
Fundy can't say it's the first night like this. There's been plenty of times where he tried his best to fall asleep but something is blocking him.
He tossed plenty of times by now in his bed. Tried so many positions no matter the awkwardness. Maybe throwing a mattress on the floor would bring results. First however, he wanted to try something different. Taking a walk usually helped clear his head. Especially if it was through the royal gardens. For all that Wilbur didn’t necessarily cared too much about it, it helped keep up the appearance he wanted. Well, ignoring the other kingdom’s opinions and the rebellion.
Quickly, he changed from his night clothes to a more casual outfit. One his father would probably chastise him for due to the darker hues present. Not to mention the lack of red.
It wasn’t something that his father liked, but something Fundy loved. Especially knowing who gifted him the clothes. He still remembered the nervous smile on Sam’s face as his small tail swished a bit back and forth. He could still see the way Dream had grinned at him as he unpacked the boxes. It had been nighttime when they gifted him the black shirts and dark pants. He’d been so overjoyed to finally have some clothes that fit his tastes more, he couldn’t stop hugging either of them.
Once dressed, he exited his room. Sam’s eyes were immediately on him. „Your Highness?“
“I cannot sleep. Would you be so kind as to accompany me to the gardens?“
Sam nodded. "Want to relax, sir?" Sam gestured to his back but Fundy shook his head.
"No thank you. I think it would help more to walk myself."
They headed down the stairs. Fundy debated getting the third part of their relationship from his room but figured, hed best let him rest if he can. They both knew what a light sleeper Dream could be. If he was asleep now and they knocked, they might just wake him from his well deserved sleep.
Sam opened the doors to the outside and stepped aside to let Fundy go forward. The moon was high in the sky. Fundy hadn’t looked at any clocks as they headed out, but he wouldn’t be surprised if the time was around 2 o’clock now. 2000 ticks past midnight.
If he was to be awake at his expected time tomorrow, he’d likely only be half present. Luckily there were no meetings to attend. So perhaps he could just skip breakfast, sleep longer. With luck, it will be one of the days where his father couldn’t bother to acknowledge his existence.
A hand wrapped around his waist and he happily leaned into his lover. „You doing alright?“ He asked before catching himself. „Besides the not sleeping of course.“
Fundy chuckled. „Yeah. Just… figuring out tomorrow’s course of events.“
“I can ensure your chambers are undisturbed till you’ve rested enough.“
“That would be much appreciated.“ Fundy sighed, closing his eyes before opening them again to stare at the stars sprinkled in the sky. It reminded him of Dream. The stars looked so much like his freckles.
His gaze moved over to the flowers that hugged the path from the sides. Black dahlias and orange lilies. They were blooming well. Their gardeners did their job wonderfully. He needed to tell them that tomorrow and also ensure his father didn’t ‘forget’ to pay them.
They met not a single soul on the way to the small lake. Everyone reasonable who didn’t have to work right now was of course asleep. Minus him. Him and his ever restless mind.
“Did you work on any new machinery recently, Sir?”
“I think we are far enough from any potential watching eyes that the ‘sir’ can be dropped, Sam. And no. Sadly not yet. Not really, I did sketch a few ideas. But they still need some more editing before any of them can be realized. Which reminds me, I wanted you to look over them sometime when you’re free. See if you can figure out what I’m missing.”
“Yeah, of course. I do have a meeting to attend tomorrow afternoon though. About the rebellion. But the day after that I should be available.”
“Perfect.”
They’ve reached the lake after passing more flowers beds with roses, tulips and gardenias.
Once they reached the bridge’s start southwest of the pavilion on the lake, Fundy’s ears perked up at the familiar sound of a lyre. The melody played was soft. Gentle. Like a calm wave. They came closer, already guessing who was playing and happy at being right. Fundy could feel Sam’s tail wagging with the wind it was producing. Fundy wouldn’t be surprised if his own was acting similar at seeing the white hair.
“Dream?”
The music stopped. “Fundy. Sam. Hi.” Green eyes looked over to them. “I’m guessing I’m not the only one who couldn’t sleep?”
Fundy smiled sheepishly. “Yeah. I don’t know why. My body just won’t cooperate tonight.”
“Bodies tend to do that. Always refusing to work right then when you need them to. Want to join me here?”
Both gave a sure before settling down. Sam curling his legs around Fundy as the prince settled against him, one hand brushing through the fluff of Sam’s fur.
“Say, what was that melody you were playing? I’ve never heard you play it before.”
Dream looked away, gaze towards southeast of here, Fundy thinks, where his home is. “One of the melodies Bad used to play when I was still in Traumreich. Usually it was to help us fall asleep. It doesn’t really work on the one playing it.” He chuckled.
“What if you played it for us?”
“I can try.”
“Please.” Dream nodded. Lyra lifted up again as his hands settled into place and started strumming.
Fundy listened to the melody, to the strings of the lyre and felt energy leave his body. A sleepy haze beginning to form over his mind. The lyre shimmered as green light flowed out of it and embraced him in a gentle warm hug. He drifted off, starring happily at Dream, not noticing how solemn he looked. He fell asleep. His body to be carried off to proper bed by his knight and a kiss placed on his forehead from both knight and jester.
Summary: After escaping their old town and getting hurt in the process, Punz and Dream are stuck at Hometown's hospital. Desperate to heal up and move on to where they feel safer, Punz opens a dark world. (2,5k Words)
For day one of c!Punz week with all three prompts Fight, Shadows and Tool used :) + some pixel art to go along with it
It started with a knife in the ground.
Or rather, it started with them both getting hurt while escaping their old town. Hurt to the point that it slowed the progress they made once the adrenaline of the chase left. In the need for supplies, they entered a town instead of passing it like all the ones before.
The store clerk was admittedly weird. A monster with a skele-ton of puns. Not that Punz minded much. Puns were usually something he quite enjoyed. However his mind was focused on other things. Such as his friend whose nose had started bleeding. Quickly, they paid and were about to head out to a dark corner when a white furred lady approached them.
She looked concerned, not that Punz trusted it to be truthful. Toriel, as she had introduced herself, found the sudden bleeding concerning and suggested going to the hospital. She insisted.
Punz still wanted to refuse. Unsure of how safe it would be, but then a weight on Punz's side increased as Dream leaned against them. His eyes were half lidded, a far away expression in his eyes. His horn looked duller.
So he agreed.
Toriel accompanied them on the way, staying until Dream was settled in a hospital bed and Punz covered in probably the cleanest bandages they've ever seen.
From then on, it was waiting till they got released.
Despite how the hospital clerk seemed rather static, she really did not like seeing Punz and Dream attempt to continue onwards without having properly healed up. The poison was still messing with Dream's body to the point that he couldn't move his legs anymore.
It left plenty of time to fill.
Luckily Punz was allowed to leave for up to two hours each day and they made use of that whenever Dream was awake and alert.
They bought some more food and supplies when the store was open which was random it seemed. One day the skeleton just stood in front of the door, unmoving while the sign said "clopen". It was certainly strange.
The only other area Punz usually went to was the library. Signing up for a library card was surprisingly easy and quick. The blue bird that was working there was certainly arrogant but dealable with and soon Punz was walking out with different books on the town's history and other useful topics.
He read them while next to Dream.
It was in one of those books that he found something that might help.
Dark worlds. Worlds that exist in the darkest of darks. Despite them being described as fictive in the book, there are documented cases of an actual influence on the real world. Personified objects, so called Darkners, when killed in the dark world will be broken in the light world. Lightners, those who live in the light world, seem to be similar in that sense. Severe damage in the dark world can cause wounds in the light world to show up. So it would only make sense that the same could be done with healing? Additionally, dark world food seems to have healing magic imbued in them. So if Punz could get Dream into a dark world and get him healing food, then…
Looking at the sleeping figure that was his friend, he knew what to do.
With a knife in hand and intent more than clear, he raised the blade and stabbed the earth.
Shadows rose like smoke out of the wound and Punz only hoped this would work as they consumed everything.
-
You open the door intending to visit Noelle's dad when shadows greet you instead of the usual front room.
A dark world has been opened in the hospital.
You feel your face change, brows furrowing in what you guess to be concern.
Beside you, Susie stiffens. "The hell? A dark world in the hospital? When did the knight create this? Wait. Noelle!" Susie grabs you by the arms, shaking you back and forth. "Noelle went here just an hour ago to visit her dad. Come on, Kris."
Without waiting a beat, Susie switches to just holding your hand and drags you down into the shadowy depths.
Down until you hit a grassy field full of white flowers with a patch of green here and there. You pick one of the flowers, hold it near your face and sniff.
It smells... clinical. Like disinfectant.
You see Susie pick one too and eat it. Her face twists. "Tastes like yucky medicine."
You both look around.
"Woah." Susie exclaims from your left. You follow her gaze to a white gigantic structure that can be best compared to a fortress or a castle or something of that kind.
You stare at it for a few more minutes before Susie shakes her head. "Alright. Let's go. We've got a fountain to seal."
You stand up and start making your way to the stronghold together.
--
Punz stared at Dream's figure on the bed. The shift in environment had luckily not woken him. He'd need the rest. Though it did make it harder to tell if the healers so far made any progress.
The healers were interesting. Based on their appearance, he guessed they were bandages in the light world. Their bodies here were strands of bandages.
Other darkners had also made their presence known. Knights with scissor, scalpel and other tool-like bodies took his orders to guard the place in case of intruders.
“Minor Angel,” one of the healers spoke “we are making good progress, however our TP is used up. We need to recharge before continuing further. Permission for a break?”
“Permission granted.” Having them rest would get their TP back faster and thus sooner back to healing well.
They saluted before heading out, closing the big doors behind them. Punz stared at the door for a second more before his gaze returned to his friend again.
“I hope this will actually work.”
Punz settled next to the bed and took his friend's hand in his. The fur had changed in hue slightly. As did his feathers and skin. It’s fascinating how the dark world works. Very interesting.
Maybe they can explore it more in the future.
---
You wander through seemingly endless halls and explore different rooms with Ralsei having joined a bit ago.
Together, you come across a library, a kitchen, a weapon and armour room and more. Plenty of enemies stand in your way. Familiar faces as well as new ones. Recruiting them is easy and gains you more of this place's story.
You learn about the angel who had built this place. The mayor angel who now guards the sickly deer and his daughter. The angel intended this place as a sanctuary, a safe place from danger, a place to heal in. Such a place needed defending and the knights were more than happy to help to defend against hostile enemies.
(You feel glad to have not fought physically so far.)
Recently, another angel joined. The minor angel who guards the unicorn in another tower, the highest of both. They, much like the mayor angel, ordered the knights to defend the stronghold against any foes.
You wonder what enemies existed in the past to lead to such defenses but none are willing to answer your question.
“Only the major angel may share the dark past in detail,” whispered one Bibliox you found in the library.
You continue on, finding a basement door with two locks in front. One has a silver design with many details engraved like wings, halos and antlers. The other is more simple but encased in gold with wings and a singular horn.
“What do you two think could be behind that door?” Susie asks as she inspects the lock.
“No idea. But if there's two locks, someone really wants to make sure it stays closed.” Ralsei replies.
Susie stares some more at the locks and chuckles. “At least it’s pretty obvious who has the keys. Let’s visit some angels.”
You agree and make your way to the top of the stronghold.
----
Dream was awake. His eyes observed their surroundings with confusion clear on his face. It’s a good sign. Enough energy and awareness to put an effort into facial expressions.
“Punz, where are we?”
“To summarise: in a kind of mirror world called a dark world.”
“How did we get here?”
“I created one. I read about how magic exists here. Healing magic exists. Should hopefully speed things up so we can get the hell out of this town.”
“Huh. Good plan. Any potential side effects?”
“Not from what I could read. Can you feel your legs?”
Dream took a second to reply, probably feeling for said body parts. “Not really. Faintly, I think. But with a bit of a disconnect?”
“Hm. At least somewhat of an development. I hope the healers will be recharged soon.”
Dream slips one of his hands into Punz’s, gently brushing his thumb along.
-----
After meeting the Major Angel, getting its key and talking a bit with Noelle and her dad, you make your way to the second tower’s top where the Minor Angel is supposed to be.
There you find yourself in front of another giant set of doors. It looked the same as the other. A teal hue with golden handles.
With your friend’s help, you open the door once more and quickly find yourself at the sharp end of a sword. Holding said sword is a figure with wings, ice blue eyes and hair in the same shade. Blue feathers cover the humanoid face in some places. The skin beneath is blue as well. If it wasn’t for the more human than bird shape, you’d suspect them to be related to Berdly. But this monster’s style was different too.
More cool.
“What the heck, dude?!” Susie exclaims, axe out and already shoving the sword away.
“No intruders allowed. Leave,” the person tells them sternly. Their sword extents and with a swish it changes to a whip.
“Not without the key to the basement.”
“What do you need it for?”
“To close the shadow fountain that's behind the locked doors. This dark world can't exist.” Ralsei bows while saying this.
“No. Leave.”
“Not without the key.” Susie insists.
“If you won’t listen, I will make you listen.” Without another word, the battle begins.
Punz stands in your way.
Your enemy doesn’t waste a moment to whip at you. You barely manage to dodge the many lashes aimed at your soul.
You use check.
The final knight of this world, guarding what is most sacred to them.
2000 HP 20 AT 5 DF
Punz briefly looks confused before shaking it off and once more attacking with their whip. You manage to dodge, only to run into one of the icicles that falls down and shatters apart.
You try to reassure Punz, that you are not here to hurt their friend, only to seal the fountain.
“Unfortunately for you, I need that fountain for a bit longer.”
“What do you even need it for, dude?” Susie asks.
“Confidential information.”
Punz’s whip shortens to a sword again before he attacks with quick swings of said blade, making you lose more HP.
You try asking what his goal is.
“Nothing you need to concern yourself with.”
“Considering it’s what’s stopping us from sealing the fountain, it very much is,” Susie insists.
“What do you even care about the fountain?”
“Its existence unbalances the universe and might cause the end,” Ralsei throws in.
Punz falters shortly. They mutter something under their breath before attacking again, lashing out multiple times.
You ask Susie to heal you, noticing how low your HP has gotten.
“You sure?” she asks, looking unsure. You nod and so she does with a small green ball floating to you and getting your HP up again.
Ralsei meanwhile, still tries to talk with Punz who seems to stare at where the green ball just went. “What could be worth destroying both worlds?”
Punz doesn’t comment. They lash out with their whip again. Instead of pulling it back though, bits of it disconnect, shooting out in all directions before returning back to the handle.
You ask if it’s for his friend behind him. They ignore you.
“Did you make the fountain to heal your friend?” Ralsei questions.
Susie looks at him, perplexed. “Wait what?”
The dark and fluffy prince twists his hands around. “Well, his friend is obviously not doing well and dark worlds can have some influence on the light world if severe enough. You did say Tenna was a bit damaged and fixed up after the Knight had slashed off his arms.”
“Right.”
“And food can heal here. Magic, healing magic exists.” Ralsei summons a small bit of sparkle to emphasise his point.
Punz looks impossibly more guarded.
“Then I’m guessing we will only get the key when their friend is healed up.” Susie comments. “Isn’t that right?” She glances to the angelic figure.
“Yup.” Punz agrees, as they wrap their whip around your soul, pulling it up and down with you barely having enough energy to dodge the icicles aimed at you.
You bring your shield up for the next attack.
“Then why won’t you let us heal him? We got two healers in this group.” Susie points out, wrapping an arm around Ralsei as she does.
“Why should I trust that you will actually heal him?”
“Cause it will let us seal the fountain quicker, duh. Additionally, softy here prefers to be kind over mean. And as someone who used to tick the other way, he does have a point.”
Punz seems to contemplate it for a bit before lowering their whip sword mix. “If you dare to hurt him in any way, you won’t wake up.” They don’t completely put their weapon away. You aren’t surprised.
They softly grab the sleeping person’s arm and gently shake while placing a kiss on his forehead. “Dream, come on, wake up.”
Slowly, green eyes open, moving over you before settling on Punz. He moves to kiss them. They let him.
“What’s up? Are more of the lil cute guys here?” His voice is groggy as he sits up slowly.
“Nope. Got two new healers that wanna try.”
“Ah.” Dream looks over to you three as Punz nods both healers over.
Unshaken by the previous threat, Susie walks next to the bed with Ralsei following along unsurely. Both close their eyes as a ball of green grows in Susie’s hands and light surrounds Ralsei. Susie shoots the sphere at Dream while Ralsei swings his hand up, causing Dream to glow a mix of yellow and green shortly.
He blinks, already starting to move his legs before Punz can even begin asking how he feels. His first attempt at standing up lands him in Punz’s arms though there does seem to be some control over his limbs.
After a few more tries, he does manage to properly stand up while only slightly leaning on his friend.
You can notice the lift in the mood.
A second later, a key gets thrown to Susie. A golden one. She catches it easily.
“Here. View it as payment for the help.” With that Punz helps Dream walk outside, telling him that there’s some flowers he might like to see.
You watch them go before heading to the basement together to seal the dark fountain.
Fic for Day 6 of c!Punz week with the prompts used being Monster and a bit of devotion
~~~~~~
Cheering filled the arena once Dream crossed the finish line with the extra boost from Punz. Another win secured for Monster High. The final one for this season.
Just in time, Punz thought as they felt their parts start locking up from the strain of the race and all the training lately.
Unlike Robecca Steam, he hadn’t been made with lasting agility in mind. Unlike her, his creator wasn’t that much of a genius. As a result, Punz needed more check ups, more repairs, more trips to the lab and a bit of extra oil always with him just in case. It wasn’t much of a bother to them usually. Except for the fact that they might have neglected it a bit while practising lately.
Both of their boyfriends tried reminding them again and again. Usually, Punz reassured them that he’s fine and did his check ups. Well. It’s nothing unusual for any of them to lie about having done necessary self care things.
Sam can get so fixated on machines and technological tests that the sphinx forgets to have his wings preened or fur groomed. Dream can forget to get his stitches fixed and stuffing refilled when trying to master a skill he sets his mind to.
They all can easily get carried away with interests of theirs. Punz is no better.
They stuck around for a bit for celebrations as Dream ensured they got celebrated as well. Pretty quickly though, they gave their boyfriend a sign that they need to get away. Dream noticed both the squeeze on his arm and the stiffness in Punz’s limbs and helped them sneak away unnoticed by pulling more attention to himself.
Once a decent few meters away from the arena, they send a message to Sam via their iCoffin and continue on towards the lab where the robotics club usually meets.
Midway their left leg got completely stuck at the knee point resulting in more limbing and a slower pace. Luckily most monsters aren’t around right now, either at home, at the arena or some place else that isn’t the halls of a school way past class and clubs time.
By the time they arrived at the lab, Sam had already spread his tools as well as some extra parts out on one of the tables. He was rearranging them again and again, seemingly unhappy with the order he had them in. Punz’s sensors also picked up the smell of oil.
“Hey Sam,” they greeted him before he could get spooked by their sudden appearance behind him.
The sphinx turned around, nearly seeming to light up. “Punz! Hi! Are you alright?” Punz walked a bit closer and Sam’s eyes near instantly went to their stiff leg. “I thought you said you oiled your leg?” He pouted, expression resembling a cat so well, Punz felt the need to squeeze him from the cuteness.
“I might have trained instead.”
“Punz.” Sam whined as he already grabbed a can of oil.
“I helped get us to victory though so worth it.” Punz settled on the examination table with only a bit of a struggle, stretching their leg forward so Sam could reach their knee easier.
“Congrats on the win. But I’m sure you could have taken some time off to take care of yourself. How did Dream not notice?”
“It only stiffened once the race was already done and over. He did notice then, which is how I even managed to sneak away.”
Sam sighed. “Still. Please take better care next year? What if it stiffens in the middle of the race?”
The robot looked away at that.
“Punz…”
“Listen, it was fine. I just needed to bang against it a bit and it worked till the end,” they argued.
“You’re getting pampered tomorrow,” Sam threatened.
Right as the last word left his mouth, a notification chimed from Punz’s phone and they could see Sam’s phone light up on the tool table. They both check and see a message from Dream in the group chat.
:) : @ Punz honey or lemon flavoured cookies?
:) : if you don’t answer you’re getting both
:) : i saw that limb, you are not moving an inch tomorrow
“Gods, you two are so annoying.” Punz complained. The grin on their face showing how annoyed they truly were.
“You love us.” Sam smiled and kissed the top of their head, only able to reach due to standing on the table with his front legs.
Punz didn’t reply, opting instead to just simply kiss Sam back and sending a message to Dream.
