Day 24.
Inktober Day 6: Sword
Maddy didn’t like fairy tales. It was always the prince who got the magic sword and never the princess. As she told her mother every day, she was going to be a princess with a sword.
“Ladies don’t play with swords, Matilda,” her grandmother reminded her.
“Why not?” asked Maddy.
“Because, Matilda, they are sharp and hurt people,” said her grandmother.
Maddy didn’t like that answer. Of course swords were sharp, how else would they protect you? And of course they hurt people -- well, maybe not people -- but trolls. They hurt trolls definitely. And bad guys.
And King Arthur got TWO swords. She wanted just one sword -- why couldn’t she have at least one?
And Queen Matilda sounded better than Queen Maddy, so maybe she would like Matilda when it wasn’t accompanied by her grandmother’s nagging voice telling her what ladies didn’t do.
Then came the day she was swimming in the lake, and saw the shine of metal glinting far below her.
“Daddy! I found a sword!” she yelled.
Her father didn’t believe her so she had to get it herself. It was lighter than she thought it would be, almost as if the lake was helping her retrieve it.
“It really is a sword,” her father said in amazement.
“The Lady of the Lake gave it to me,” Matilda announced. “Just like King Arthur. Now I’m going to be Queen and kill all the trolls.”
