2025 Fic Year in Review

Please feel free to play! I love to see what other people have written, and often spot fic I’d love to read that I missed 💜

So, every year I aim to publish more words on AO3 than the year before, to get fics finished. (The great thing about a low word count year is that publishing more the following year is easier, ha.) For 2025 I published 16,232 words, which was just a little less than last year thanks to 9,720 words of Secret Santa fic.

In February I wrote three fills for the @be_compromised mini promptathon: NPC (“Come on,” Natasha says, rolling her eyes, “is this really how you die?”), The Privilege is Mine (“If you had to kill me,” Natasha says with a sharp grin, “how would you do it?”), and The Canadian Crisis (“So, we're invading Canada?” Clint says. “Because it sounds very much like the overall goal can be summed up as ‘invade Canada’.”).

In summer I had high hopes of finishing a few short WIPs. Well, one is better than none: a symbol of resistance (Five weeks into the Ohio mission, Natasha does a little shoplifting at the local drugstore, persuades one of the neighbours’ kids to let her use their bathroom, and comes home with her hair dyed blue.)

And the rest of my fics were for @be_compromised events: In Good Hands (On a rescue mission, Natasha is the first to find Clint.) for Promptathon, Midnight at a Crossroads (Midnight at a crossroads in Ohio. Natasha strikes a deal.) for the Halloween prompt challenge, and Hawkeye (Is A Gender Neutral Codename) (Clint Barton figures out what it means to her to be a transgender woman and coming out, with support from her family and friends.) for Secret Santa.

To the suprise of no one, they're all Clint Barton/Natasha Romanoff, Clint & Natasha, and one standalone Natasha. I did also get some Clint/Laura in there, and Deadpool and Wolverine.

2026 goals: keep writing, try to finish fics, and, for the love of all things, stop writing the most words at the worst time of the year for it, ha.

You are so good at plotty stories, and I LOVE the sassy politics (The Western Shore! Dear Vladimir), and bureaucracy (the forms one!), and your OCs (Doreen!), but. Kill Me Anytime made me laugh my socks off in this year of doom <3 And I adore everything you write with Clint and Kate - Post Restante, Diamonds and Rust, the 5 things fics - because the way you write them together is just such an excellent relationship, and sass squared.

<3 I *love* writing Kate. It’s so funny, because when I first learned of her existence I thought WHAT?? ANOTHER HAWKEYE? HOW DUMB IS THAT??? And then I actually read the Fraction series and... well, suffice it to say, I changed. Good thing we can do that! Also, mocking bureaucracy and politics is life...

While I’m here, I absolutely adore your AUs. Again, that is something I initially resisted to the point of stubbornness - mostly because a lot of people just tack characters’ names on a generic cardboard cutout and make them have sex. But then I read The Nature of Dust and started to see the possibilities! So, thank you!!

Ooo, tell me more about a tower for my prince (Avengers)?

Oooh, most gladly! This is a high fantasy AU I’ve had drifting around for... you know what, let’s not get specific on the details. Anyway it’s a Jane Foster-centric take on the plot of Thor in a world where Jotunheim is the ancient and hated country next door, the stars can influence magic workings, and no one really believes that the Old Ways Jane’s spice-and-gem magic is tuned to could ever be revived again. That is, of course, until a lost prince falls out of thin air and lands near a observatory tower by the mountains...

I got sidetracked in the weeds of plot details, as seems to be my way with longer stories, but I’d love to actually finish it one day. While it picks up most of the MCU crew pre-2015 and has a Jane/Thor angle, Darcy and Jane’s voices are my absolutely favorites and the parts I drift back to re-reading it are almost always between them. Case in point:

It wasn’t until Darcy put a paperweight firmly on top of the stack she was fussing with that Jane realized she was stalling. Her assistant’s eyebrows were raised and there was a frank look in her eyes.

“You’re going to have to meet them sometime, you know. Nothing to be nervous about.”

“I’m not nervous!” She shot back, knowing the words were a lie even as they passed her lips. “I just – they’re nobles.” The same kind that looked down on her in school, that mocked her curiosity and passion as a child.

“Thor’s, like, the noble, you know.”

“I made him sleep in pink sheets with a blanket that had a teddy bear sewn on it. That’s different.”

Darcy let out a long breath.

“You are depriving me of my sole chance to ogle hot people in armor on horses, Jane. This is unacceptable.”

“You ogle the army every chance you get!”

“They don’t have names with ‘Sir’ attached. Definitely a step up. Look,” she continued, her arch tone gentling, “all you have to do is come out, accept their thanks for rescuing Prince Hoighty-toighty, take whatever reward they want to give you, and come back to the tower. Me? I am going to make good use of the eye candy, because the odds are I will never see men so manly or women so womanly ever again.”

They never cease to make me laugh. And really, that’s the heart of it - it’s a story about belief in yourself and others, and family in all the ways that matter, and that the greatest power doesn’t come from what we are given but what we end up doing with it. Sometimes the simplest things will make the biggest difference.

After The Threesome

James Barnes/Natasha Romanoff; James Barnes/Natasha Romanoff/Clint Barton; 2,400 words; Clint POV.

Summary: After the threesome, both Natasha and James take Clint home.

Notes: Title is from the poem ‘After The Threesome, They Both Take You Home’ by Sue Hyon Bae, as are part of the plot and a few borrowed phrases throughout. CloudAtlas prompted the poem in this year’s be_compromised promptathon and then also beta read – thank you! <3 I did make a few edits afterwards, so any remaining mistakes are mine. The nacho incident is based on a biscuit incident I read about once on the internet, which CloudAtlas reminded me happened to Douglas Adams.

I find it hard to pick favourites of anything, but tonight I'm gonna go with:

Anthology - a Clint/Natasha focussed remix of Ex Libris by @cloud–atlas for the @be-compromised Remix Exchange 2020, in verse.

ten times as long (to put yourselves back together) - a team Avengers fic written for @alphaflyer in a fic exchange, which is a Civil War recovery story set after Infinity War when it was about 2 years before the latter would be released.

unconventional tokens of affection - for a prompt from @crazy4orcas (which is the title) and the fifth fic in the Of Wax And Blood series (a Clint and Natasha AU in which Natasha is a demon).

Allegedly - Clint/Natasha/Bucky written for @cassiesinsanity based on the prompt alleged threesome led to 60 person brawl on carnival cruise, passenger says.

Smile For The Living - written for @quietlyimplode in the @be_compromised End Game Fix-It Fest, Clint/Laura/Natasha in which Clint brings Natsha home.

I wrote a seasonal thing!

Title: We Never Get Our Deposit Back Author: inkvoices Rating/Warnings: Teen and Up; no archive warnings apply Charaters/Pairing: Clint/Nat/Bucky Word Count: 1200 Summary: Lucky gets sprayed by a skunk while Clint, Nat, and Bucky are having an autumn vacation.

"The hell?" Nat says, pushing past Bucky where he's frozen in the doorway and dumping her bag of groceries on the kitchen island as she surveys the carnage.

"Skunk." Clint waves one hand tiredly at the inflatable kiddie pool taking up most of the floor space in the small kitchen-lounge. "Dog bath."
