Raise A glass To the Life of 70’s in The 70’s Show
“Oh, life in the 70’s- it was MIRACULOUS- nothing like the way you people live today”.
Isn’t this one of the common dialogues the teenagers today get to hear a lot? Was the 70’s really so glorious or is it just another cheeky line that caught the attention and has been hogging limelight. Well, one cannot really go back in time but you have a better alternative. Watch The 70’s Show.
The 70’s Show- A Retreat To The Golden Era?
Directed by David Trainer, The 70’s Show contrary to its name is not all about flat bottoms and the things that made 70’s the golden era. It has its share of nostalgia of the golden era but it is much more than that. It is a period sitcom that aimed at making people laugh and enjoy their time. With the right dose of subtlety, it emphasized on a lot of issues and the changes that have come in the society today and how “old was gold”.
The 70’s Show was first aired on 1998 and it had eight consecutive seasons and it ended with its 200th episode back in 2006. The popularity is so whopping that even today in 2013, there are people who catch up old episodes of The 70’s Show.
There are a lot of different elements of the show that spanned huge popularity. The circle, the dream sequences, the vista cruiser, the running gags, the stupid helmet and the water tower are some of the most common elements that make The 70’s Show so charmingly popular.
Stars at their Best
The cast of the 70’s show must be applauded for their phenomenal performance. Topher Grace as the geeky boy wins a lot of heart with his stunning performance. Even Mila Kunis who is initially portrayed as a spoilt brat is liked and loved by audiences as the series progresses because she starts looking more hot than sweet. Danny Masterson is the cool hunk who has a smart wit and packed humor and is the guy that teens love to mimic. It is perhaps Ashton Kutcher who is the real hero of the series. Portrayed as the dumb boy initially and the series of misfortune that he goes through makes you feel sorry for the boy you are bound to love.
There are a lot of other characters that blend superbly into their role. What makes The 70’s Show such a hit among people is that it is not individual stand out performances that you will note rather it is how the group blends into a knit and you will actually feel like you are seeing a family in action and the show does not look like it is scripted.
There are a few intense topic of discussions like infidelity, lack of family values, weed, drugs, excessive drinking; teenage behavior and so on and so forth. The 70’s Show contrary to the belief of some people is not a spiritual series that will ask you to quit bad habits and become a hippie like people in 70’s were “supposedly” like. It pokes fun, has its light taste of humor, shows teen smoking weed and enjoying a beer, but it carries the little message that bad things when done in small measures may not be so quantifying horrible. However, when you cross the line, REAL disaster begins. It shows how teens long for freedom and yet when they are free, they tend to come back to the basement and hang around together.
The 70’s Show is not exactly a run of the mill account of what life in the 70’s was like. However, it is one of that legendary sitcom that makes you wish that “oh, boy a 70’s kid had a life I will trade anything for”.
No X Box one, no stylish iPhone, no high definition LED TV and yet The 70’s Show is a hit among the rowdy teens of today. Isn’t that a huge achievement in itself? It proves what The 70’s Show means a lot to people of today.
What have you got to say for The 70’s Show?
