The 1957 Treaty of Rome created the European Economic Community, today known as the European Union. The original members, known as the “Inner Six”, can be seen above: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. 

This document highlights the original (mostly economic) goals of those six founders. Understanding the original intent of the European Economic Community, which has evolved greatly over the past six decades, is important for understanding the modern role of the European Union, which faces existential questions across Europe, most notably in Britain with the Brexit process.
