UW Researchers Develop Innovative App for Sleep Apnea Studies
An authority in adult and pediatric anesthesiology, Bruce Hugh Dorman, MD, has served as the principal investigator for a number research projects funded by the American Heart Association. In preparation for his career in anesthesiology, Dr. Bruce Hugh Dorman completed a residency and fellowship at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he was elected chief resident for two years. As one of the top recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health (second only to Harvard University), the University of Washington School of Medicine continually works to support researchers in their efforts to streamline and reinvent health care. Recently, a team of researchers from the UW Medicine Sleep Center debuted an innovative app that may transform treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where a blocked airway interrupts normal sleep patterns. A relatively common condition that affects approximately one out of every 13 adults, obstructive sleep apnea has traditionally relied on overnight stays in specialty clinics with individuals connected to various sensors for its diagnosis. However, UW researchers recently developed ApneaApp, a smartphone application that uses built-in hardware to produce inaudible sound waves to track breathing patterns wirelessly. The system was piloted on a sample of 37 patients undergoing sleep apnea screening at the Harborview Medical Center and successfully tracked respiratory events with 95 to 99 percent accuracy. Home testing showed that the app was successful at distances of up to 3 feet with the patient in any sleeping position. In addition to reducing costs associated with clinical stays, the new technology could provide medical professionals with a more comprehensive portrait of sleep habits over several nights. The technology has since been presented at the MobiSys 2015 conference and is in the process of obtaining FDA approval.
6- Conclusion
Sweet Spoon Bake or Buy is an innovative app which offers a range of practical functions for the market. The marketing strategy ended up having a significant impact on the app as a whole. In terms of the app’s concept- it helped to determine the format and functions most useful to potential users. In terms of the app’s business model- it gave a crucial insight into market expectations in this regard. In terms of the app’s design- the marketing helped to determine the user demographics and desires, and influenced design from that perspective.
From my personal point of view this project enabled me to learn about the making of an app not only in terms of marketing planning but also relating this area to its technical aspect an concept.
An App That Maps The Web In Real Time
The map, which takes the form of a free app for Android and iOS, features 22,961 of the Internet’s biggest nodes--not individual websites, but the ISPs, universities, and other places that host them--joined by some 50,000 discrete connections. The app gives you two ways of surveying it all: geographically, on a globe, or by size, which rearranges the nodes into a loose column of points. Both views are interactive; instead of showing the Internet as a static neon blob, the app lets you explore the neon blob in the round, with all the familiar multitouch gestures. It may not look like the Google Maps app, but it instantly feels like it, which makes exploring the underbelly of the web all the easier.
