For those of us still using Mondly (I lucked out finding a free premium on here when I did), I just got a pop up saying they added eight languages:

The male voice for mondlys romanian lessons makes me very uncomfortable. Like idk what it is about this dudes voice but every time I hear it I tense up. And it pops up completely randomly in lessons. Luckily he says the same word/phrase throughout whatever lesson he pops up in so after it happens once I can prepare myself for it when that word or phrase comes up again but it makes it very hard to concentrate on WHAT hes saying when his voice makes my brain nope out.

App review: study Russian with Mondly

Howdy! I’m going to write every Sunday reviews about stuff that can help you study Russian. I guess it would be useful to read reviews like this by the native speaker. If you want to know my opinion about any app/book/site/etc., just DM me! I’ll test it and write my Sunday review.

So, today I’m going to check app “Mondly” for Android and IOS.

I chose “Beginner” level to check, what can we do there. 

DESIGN

OK. I really love language apps with good design. It’s important to feel comfortable while reading and making exercises. Design of this app is based on soft blue and purple colours. So, your eyes won’t tired really fast.

And  I really like how they designed statistics window. You can find there everything:

Spent time

How many words and phrases do you know

Streak

Daily progress

And this brain looks so cute! You can see your progress in these tiny points!

EXERCISE TYPES

I like to play games to study languages. I have fun and study at the time. Two birds with one stone! OK, let’s see what can we do with this app. There are 4 game categories to play:

Topic with new words and phrases;

Daily lesson | Weekly Quiz | Monthly Challenge 

Chat bot

Core Vocabulary (only for Premium)

I don’t want to buy Premium account only for testing this app. But if you interesting in it, you can buy Premium for about 8 dollars per month (1 language), 40 dollars per year (1 language) or 40 dollars per year with ‘only today’ discount (34 languages).

Firstly, you can see all Russian words in Latin script, and it isn’t good at all. As for me, it’s better to start studying new language with the alphabet. Really, it will be hard to understand for you in the future, what means “рыба” (ryba) or “мать” (mat’) if you can read it only in Latin script and don’t know ‘ъ’, ‘ь’ and ‘ы’. BUT! You can change Latin into Cyrillic script. There’s a little button in the upper right corner of the screen. So, please, tap it asap if you would like to study Russian in a proper way. And that’s really good, that you can listen to every word in Russian. It sounds clearly, so you won’t have any problems with understanding.

Main topic and daily lessons include 4 game types. The first two types asked you to:

Move the word to the correct answer

Or swipe up/down to the correct answer

Even if you don’t know how to translate this word into Russian, you can choose the correct image and memorize writing and sounding of the correct Russian word.

The 3th game type is to translate the sentence. You have some words, most of them are excess. And it isn’t a difficult task, because you can always tap an unfamiliar word and then find it among proposed words.

And the 4th  game askes you to say Russian phrases. You have just to repeat what you have heard. You can check lesson review. It’s a really amazing and useful thing! You can find there:

New verb forms in present, past and future tenses (you can find verb forms in the game “sentence translation”)

Conversation

You can find this game in your main topic’s games. It looks like a chat. You can read it, you can listen to Russian pronunciation. And you have to repeat every phrase in Russian. And I found a defect here. “What is your name” translates like “Как Вас (тебя) зовут?” [Kak vas (tebya) zovut], “Какое у Вас (тебя) имя?” [Kakoe u vas (tebya) imya] or just “Ваше (твоё) имя?” [Vashe (tvoyo) imya]. Name = имя, surname = фамилия [familiya]. And we can’t say in Russian “Как Ваша фамилия?” [Kak vasha familiya], only “Какая у Вас фамилия?” [Kakaya u Vas familiya].

Chatbot

I had never seen chatbots like this. You can reply writing or recording the answer. And this chatbot offers you answer options. You can tap them to hear what to say and then repeat it.

Also, you can turn on|off translation of these options.

But only one chat is free, other topics are included in Premium.

OK, let’s sum up the results.

Is it useful in studying Russian? YES!

Are games interesting? Yes!

What about design of the app? It’s perfect!

Can I listen to Russian pronunciation? Yes.

Can I read in Latin | Cyrillic script? In both, but choose it’s better to choose Cyrillic.

Can I expand my vocabulary? Yes, that’s why this app was created!

Can I improve my pronunciation? Yeeeeeeees

How much Premium costs? About 8 dollars per month (1 language), 40 dollars per year (1 language) or 40 dollars per year with ‘only today’ discount (34 languages).

Can I do a lot with free version? NO!!!

Can I use this app to study other languages? Yes

tfw you post 2 videos in a week but they’re both late So you may have seen last week I made a post asking which language I should learn next and Thai won the vote! This video is kinda just explaining what it is exactly I’m gonna be doing and talking a bit about the @mondlylanguages app which I’ll be using to learn Thai. Quick Mondly Update!

In case any of you are still wondering, the code MONDLY still works to give you a free Mondly Premium account. However, I haven't been on the app in almost 2 years, so I don't really have much information other than that about Mondly. I do however plan to start reusing it this summer and I'll post an update once I get into it and can properly review it
