            -   mildred is so very hard to read.  gwendolyn tries, oh god, does she try  -  but it’s near impossible to ever know what the other woman is thinking.  she hesitates for a moment,  toying with the idea of reaching out her hands and taking mildred’s within her own but she quickly decides against it and resorts to placing her hands upon her arms instead.  it’s intimate but it still, she hopes,  gives her the space that she thinks mildred prefers.  “  then tell me, mildred. “  it’s hard to mask the desperation in her tone.  “ tell me what it is that you need right now so that i can accommodate.  i’m trying. “ and there it is, the defeat.  façade cracks just a little, unmasking the vulnerable side of gwendolyn briggs   (  the side she’s tried to hard to keep protected. )  “ i want to make this work between us  -  i want to ensure that you’re happy,  that i’m giving you everything that you could want,  that you could need.  but   -  but to be successful,  you’ve got to work with me, my love.  this is a two way street and i’m no mind reader,  despite how much i wish that i was. “

Mud squelches around his boots, seeping through tears and cracks in the leather to settle its cold fingers around already irritated skin, and Jaime shifts where he sits, hands chained behind him as if he were nothing but an animal. Perhaps I am, he muses. The blood and muck where Alton had lain, breath snuffed out at the kingslayer’s whim and face a mess of blood and bone, stands as a testament to just how far Jaime Lannister is willing to go. For family, for honor, for her.

I am a lion. And lions do not so easily rest behind iron bars.

Green eyes rise to meet the woman who studies him - Catelyn Stark is figure to behold in the moonlight that reflects off flames of hair, shrouding her face in shadow .. but the Lannister knows what is hidden under the darkness. It’s no doubt the same expression  her husband had fixed upon him in the throne room, steel of his blade still stained red from the king turned corpse upon the floor .. no doubt the same expression he has garnered for years and will garner for years to come. If he survives this den of  wolves.

“You fight this war to avenge a husband who left you and went to King’s Landing in some mad attempt at duty.” The words are rough, rasped from a throat raw and aching and Jaime lets his gaze drop once more, shifting uncomfortable in his bonds. “Do you think - “ Tongue sweeps over a cracked lip as green flicker to meet blue, one brow arching as if he has nothing but all the time in the world for a simple discussion. “ - do you think your honorable Ned Stark thought of duty and honor as he brought you his bastard? How shaming that must have been. To spend an entire war waiting on the man you married, the man you pledged to love ... only to have him return with the worst gift in the world. ” 

A hiss of breath as he pretends to ponder such a thing, sympathy lacing each syllable of his final blow. “At least my supposed broken oath was done swiftly - The Mad King never woke up to betrayal every day thereafter. Something to be grateful for, though I doubt you or anyone else will see it that way.”

Green eyes study the ones that meet his own, framed by skin that is pale and pinched, edged by the slight twist that sits like a shadow in the corner of the boy’s mouth. The sun is lacking in the wilds of the north - why must they insist on winter’s warning when it seems as if its never left? - and the damp breeze that ruffles golden hair feels as cool as the bitterness that rises along the back of Jaime’s throat. Winterfell survives around them, but for a single moment uncle and nephew go unnoticed, fading easily into the shade cast by overburdened clouds and stone walls.

“Your mother is insisting we stay on our best behavior. You know this...right?” Brows quirk in question as the lion allows his gaze to wander, flickering to the mess at their feet before settling once more on Joffrey’s expression. The dead cat is a mess of broken bones and matted fur, lying in a dark pool of its own blood - a misshapen mound that boots easily step over as fingers clasp against the boy’s shoulder. Two women pass as he leads them away, muttering about the invalid that is Bran Stark, whispering half guessed theories and rumors being whispered by even the local whores themselves, and Jaime’s lips twist into a wry smile, palm pressing as if to hurry his companion along. “Perhaps we could both stand to remember that fact..,”

her ears practically prick up at that sentence :   i bought you something  -  oh,  how quickly she becomes interested.  “ well don’t you just know what to say to keep a girl happy. “   the magazine she had been reading becomes less interesting and she tosses it to the side, standing to meet her wife at the entrance of the living room.  “ don’t keep me waiting, darling  -  what is it? “  she leans in to peak into the designer bags,  brow raising when she spots something raunchy.  “ i see something red and laced. “  and she isn’t disappointed.  “ is this something you bought for me? . . .  or something you bought for yourself that i’ll be wearing?  i know you can’t resist me when i’m wearing red. “
