Insmed More Than Doubles on Late-Stage Trial Insmed Inc. (NASDAQ: INSM) saw its shares more than double early on Tuesday after the firm released late-stage results from its clinical study in the treatment of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) lung disease.

L’azienda americana Insmed Inc. ha annunciato si aver sospeso, su richiesta di FDA (Food and Drug Administration), gli studi clinici di Fase 3 del suo prodotto ARIKACE (Amikacina liposomale per inalazione) nei pazienti affetti da Fibrosi Cistica con infezioni polmonari da Pseudimonas e nei pazienti con malattie polmonari riconducibili a infezioni da micobatteri non-tubercolari.
Oltre alla sospensione dello studio clinico, FDA ha richiesto all’aziende del New Jersey dati aggiuntivi relativi agli studi di cancerogenicità a lungo termine condotti sui ratti ai quali il farmaco era stato somministrato per inalazione.
La Insmed trasmetterà i dati all’agenzia americana entro 30 giorni.

FDA autorizza gli studi per l'utilizzo dell'amikacina come trattamento per le infezioni polmonari da micobatteri non-tubercolari
L'azienda americana Insmed Inc., ha annunciato di aver ricevuto l'autorizzazione da parte di FDA (Food and Drug Administration) per l'utilizzo dell'antibiotico amikacina per gli studi clinici di Fase 3 nel trattamento delle infezioni polmonari da micobatteri non-tubercolari (NTM - Nontuberculous Mycobacteria), batteri solitamente presenti nel suolo e nell'acqua che possono causare seri danni agli individui più suscettibili.
Lo studio sui pazienti, che inizierà nella seconda metà del 2011, verrà condotto in collaborazione con il National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) e prevede l'utilizzo dell'amikacina in una nuova formulazione: l'antibiotico è contenuto in nanocapsule di lipidi - i liposomi - che consentono un rilascio lento del farmaco all'interno dei polmoni. In questo modo, il farmaco sarà somministrato ai malati una volta al giorno, mediante inalazione.
Attualmente le infezioni polmonari da NTM vengono trattate con un cocktail di farmaci per lunghi periodi, cure che vengono mal tollerate dai pazienti.
La conclusione dello studio è prevista per la prima metà del 2013.
